Comparing the Outage Capacity of Transmit Diversity and Incremental Relaying
We present the e-outage capacity of incremental relaying at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) in a wireless cooperative network with slow Rayleigh fading channels. The relay performs decode-and-forward and repetition coding is employed in the network, which is optimal in the low SNR regime. We derive an expression on the optimal relay location that maximizes the e-outage capacity. It is shown that this location is independent of the outage probability and SNR but only depends on the channel conditions represented by a path-loss factor. We compare our results to the e-outage capacity of the cut-set bound and demonstrate that the ratio between the e-outage capacity of incremental relaying and the cut-set bound lies within 1/wurzel2 and 1. Furthermore, we derive lower bounds on the e-outage capacity for the case of K relays
Pattern Stability and Trijunction Motion in Eutectic Solidification
We demonstrate by both experiments and phase-field simulations that lamellar
eutectic growth can be stable for a wide range of spacings below the point of
minimum undercooling at low velocity, contrary to what is predicted by existing
stability analyses. This overstabilization can be explained by relaxing Cahn's
assumption that lamellae grow locally normal to the eutectic interface.Comment: 4 pages, 5 eps figure
Molecular and pomological diversity among pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) cultivars in Eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey
Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is an important fruit species for Turkey where many cultivars are being cultivated. In this study, we determined the fruit characteristics and RAPD band patterns of sixlocal cultivars from Hatay, Turkey. Our results demonstrated that there is a great level of morphological variation. The principle component analysis of 18 quantitative fruit characteristics revealed that fruitweight, aril number/fruit, peel color and soluble solids/acidity ratio are important traits for discriminating the cultivars tested. The UPGMA cluster of fruit characteristics indicated that âKatĂ˝rbaĂ˝âand âKan narĂ˝â were similar to each other and they were separated from rest of the cultivars. Twenty-two RAPD primers generated total of 106 reproducible bands 22% of which were polymorphic. The UPGMAdendrogram of RAPD data showed that âTatlĂ˝ narâ and âerifeâ were very closely related while âncekabukâ is distinct from the other cultivars. As a result, discrepancies were detected between morphological and molecular data. Therefore, we confirmed that diversity among the fruitcharacteristics were not good indication of genetic relatedness while molecular tools are valuable to study such similarities
Acoustic resonances in microfluidic chips: full-image micro-PIV experiments and numerical simulations
We show that full-image micro-PIV analysis in combination with images of
transient particle motion is a powerful tool for experimental studies of
acoustic radiation forces and acoustic streaming in microfluidic chambers under
piezo-actuation in the MHz range. The measured steady-state motion of both
large 5 um and small 1 um particles can be understood in terms of the acoustic
eigenmodes or standing ultra-sound waves in the given experimental
microsystems. This interpretation is supported by numerical solutions of the

Vaginal metastasis of a Ewing sarcoma five years after resection of the primary tumor
A 35-year-old female presented with pain and swelling of the distal left radius. A diagnosis of Ewing sarcoma was made and she underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy and surgery. Macroscopic viable areas remained on the map of the surgical specimen; as such, she was classified as a poor responder and received high dose adjuvant chemotherapy. She remained disease-free for five years, until age 40. A vaginal polyp was then detected during a routine gynaecologic examination. It was removed and histopathology revealed metastatic Ewing sarcoma
Complexity-entropy causality plane: a useful approach for distinguishing songs
Nowadays we are often faced with huge databases resulting from the rapid
growth of data storage technologies. This is particularly true when dealing
with music databases. In this context, it is essential to have techniques and
tools able to discriminate properties from these massive sets. In this work, we
report on a statistical analysis of more than ten thousand songs aiming to
obtain a complexity hierarchy. Our approach is based on the estimation of the
permutation entropy combined with an intensive complexity measure, building up
the complexity-entropy causality plane. The results obtained indicate that this
representation space is very promising to discriminate songs as well as to
allow a relative quantitative comparison among songs. Additionally, we believe
that the here-reported method may be applied in practical situations since it
is simple, robust and has a fast numerical implementation.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physica
Turkish Validity and Reliability Study of the Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing Scale
Objective:The Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing Scale (SSQ) is a self-report scale that evaluates hearing in complex daily life situations in the areas of hearing quality, speech perception, and spatial perception. It is also frequently used in the follow-up of hearing-impaired people, hearing aid and cochlear implant users. It is aimed to translate and adapt SSQ into Turkish, and to investigate its test-retest reliability, and construct validity and reliability, and further to present associations of SSQ scores with the pure tone averages (PTA).Methods:The Turkish SSQ (Tr-SSQ) scale was administered on 114 adults including those with and without hearing loss. Cronbachâs alpha was used to assess its reliability. The reliability coefficient of the scale was calculated by test-retest method. Associations of SSQ scores with PTAs in better and worse hearing ears (BHE and WHE) were evaluated.Results:Tr-SSQ presented high internal consistency (Cronbachâs alpha = 0.984) and test-retest reliability (r=0.994). Tr-SSQ scores were lower in the subjects with hearing loss and correlated with PTAs. Age was found to be correlated with PTAs; regression analysis demonstrated that only WHE-PTA was extracted as explanatory variable for average Tr-SSQ, speech perception and spatial perception scores while both BHE-PTA and WHE-PTA were found to be predictors of hearing quality, but not age for any of Tr-SSQ scores.Conclusion:Tr-SSQ is a convenient tool for assessing the hearing abilities of individuals with hearing impaired

Neutrinos below 100 TeV from the southern sky employing refined veto techniques to IceCube data
Many Galactic sources of gamma rays, such as supernova remnants, are expected to produce neutrinos with a typical energy cutoff well below 100 TeV. For the IceCube Neutrino Observatory located at the South Pole, the southern sky, containing the inner part of the Galactic plane and the Galactic Center, is a particularly challenging region at these energies, because of the large background of atmospheric muons. In this paper, we present recent advancements in data selection strategies for track-like muon neutrino events with energies below 100 TeV from the southern sky. The strategies utilize the outer detector regions as veto and features of the signal pattern to reduce the background of atmospheric muons to a level which, for the first time, allows IceCube searching for point-like sources of neutrinos in the southern sky at energies between 100 GeV and several TeV in the muon neutrino charged current channel. No significant clustering of neutrinos above background expectation was observed in four years of data recorded with the completed IceCube detector. Upper limits on the neutrino flux for a number of spectral hypotheses are reported for a list of astrophysical objects in the southern hemisphere
