Approach to a rational rotation number in a piecewise isometric system
We study a parametric family of piecewise rotations of the torus, in the
limit in which the rotation number approaches the rational value 1/4. There is
a region of positive measure where the discontinuity set becomes dense in the
limit; we prove that in this region the area occupied by stable periodic orbits
remains positive. The main device is the construction of an induced map on a
domain with vanishing measure; this map is the product of two involutions, and
each involution preserves all its atoms. Dynamically, the composition of these
involutions represents linking together two sector maps; this dynamical system
features an orderly array of stable periodic orbits having a smooth parameter
dependence, plus irregular contributions which become negligible in the limit.Comment: LaTeX, 57 pages with 13 figure
Effective Launch-to-Capture Power Reduction for LOS Scheme with Adjacent-Probability-Based X-Filling
It has become necessary to reduce power during LSI testing. Particularly, during at-speed testing, excessive power consumed during the Launch-To-Capture (LTC) cycle causes serious issues that may lead to the overkill of defect-free logic ICs. Many successful test generation approaches to reduce IR-drop and/or power supply noise during LTC for the launch-off capture (LOC) scheme have previously been proposed, and several of X-filling techniques have proven especially effective. With X-filling in the launch-off shift (LOS) scheme, however, adjacent-fill (which was originally proposed for shift-in power reduction) is used frequently. In this work, we propose a novel X-filling technique for the LOS scheme, called Adjacent-Probability-based X-Filling (AP-fill), which can reduce more LTC power than adjacent-fill. We incorporate AP-fill into a post-ATPG test modification flow consisting of test relaxation and X-filling in order to avoid the fault coverage loss and the test vector count inflation. Experimental results for larger ITC\u2799 circuits show that the proposed AP-fill technique can achieve a higher power reduction ratio than 0-fill, 1-fill, and adjacent-fill.2011 Asian Test Symposium, 20-23 November 2011, New Delhi, Indi
X-ray Diffraction and Molecular Dynamics Study of Medium-range Order in Ambient and Hot Water
We have developed x-ray diffraction measurements with high energy-resolution
and accuracy to study water structure at three different temperatures (7, 25
and 66 C) under normal pressure. Using a spherically curved Ge crystal an
energy resolution better than 15 eV has been achieved which eliminates
influence from Compton scattering. The high quality of the data allows a
precise oxygen-oxygen pair correlation function (PCF) to be directly derived
from the Fourier transform of the experimental data resolving shell structure
out to ~12 {\AA}, i.e. 5 hydration shells. Large-scale molecular dynamics (MD)
simulations using the TIP4P/2005 force-field reproduce excellently the
experimental shell-structure in the range 4-12 {\AA} although less agreement is
seen for the first peak in the PCF. The Local Structure Index [J. Chem. Phys.
104, 7671 (1996)] identifies a tetrahedral minority giving the
intermediate-range oscillations in the PCF and a disordered majority providing
a more featureless background in this range. The current study supports the
proposal that the structure of liquid water, even at high temperatures, can be
described in terms of a two-state fluctuation model involving local structures
related to the high-density and low-density forms of liquid water postulated in
the liquid-liquid phase transition hypothesis.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Chem. Chem. Phy
Discretized rotation has infinitely many periodic orbits
For a fixed k in (-2,2), the discretized rotation on Z^2 is defined by
(x,y)->(y,-[x+ky]). We prove that this dynamics has infinitely many periodic
orbits.Comment: Revised after referee reports, and added a quantitative statemen
Indirect Detection of Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter from Latticized Universal Dimensions
We consider Kaluza-Klein dark matter from latticized universal dimensions. We
motivate and investigate two different lattice models, where the models differ
in the choice of boundary conditions. The models reproduce relevant features of
the continuum model for Kaluza-Klein dark matter. For the model with simple
boundary conditions, this is the case even for a model with only a few lattice
sites. We study the effects of the latticization on the differential flux of
positrons from Kaluza-Klein dark matter annihilation in the galactic halo. We
find that for different choices of the compactification radius, the
differential positron flux rapidly converges to the continuum model results as
a function of the number of lattice sites. In addition, we consider the
prospects for upcoming space-based experiments such as PAMELA and AMS-02 to
probe the latticization effect.Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, LaTeX. Final version published in JCA
Tracing the dispersal route of the invasive Japanese beetle Popillia japonica
The Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica, is a highly polyphagous Scarabaeidae native to Japan that colonized North America and Azores in the last century and has recently invaded Italy and Switzerland. Considering its economic impact on the horticulture and turfgrass industries, this species was ranked within the EU priority pests list in 2019. According to the EU Convention on Biological Diversity, the identification of invasion routes is a pivotal aspect in an effective management program aimed at controlling invasive alien species. To reconstruct the source of introductions of this pest, we investigated the genetic variability of P. japonica in its native and invaded areas worldwide by analyzing 9 microsatellite loci and two mitochondrial genes, COX I and CytB. In its native area, P. japonica is structured into two populations: one in the southern and another in the northern-central region of Japan. A limited area within central Japan was identified as the putative source of the North American outbreak. Moreover, the ABC inference and phylogeographic reconstruction suggest that two European populations originated from two independent introductions. The Azores Islands outbreak occurred approximately 50 years ago and originated from the southeastern region of North America (For simplicity, in this paper North America refers to Canada and the USA), while the second introduction, more recently, occurred in Italy and Switzerland and originated from northeastern region of North America
Cohomology of bundles on homological Hopf manifold
We discuss the properties of complex manifolds having rational homology of
including those constructed by Hopf, Kodaira and
Brieskorn-van de Ven. We extend certain previously known vanishing properties
of cohomology of bundles on such manifolds. As an application we consider
degeneration of Hodge-deRham spectral sequence in this non Kahler setting.Comment: To appear in Proceedings of 2007 conference on Several complex

Stratigraphic framework of the late Miocene to Pliocene Pisco Formation at Cerro Colorado (Ica Desert, Peru).
This paper describes a 200 m-thick section of the Pisco Formation exposed at Cerro Colorado, an important fossiliferous site in the Ica desert. In order to properly place the fauna in its correct relative position, this study establishes the stratigraphic framework within which the different fossil-bearing intervals of this site can be compared and may prove invaluable in future high-resolution studies on the faunal change. Most of the Pisco Formation deposits exposed at Cerro Colorado consist of gently dipping fine-grained sandstones, diatomaceous siltstones and diatomites with minor ash layers and dolomites deposited within nearshore and offshore settings. To facilitate detailed stratigraphic correlations within the Pisco strata for a 30 km2 area, eight marker beds have been defined and large-scale (1:10,000 scale) geological mapping conducted to determine fault positions, styles and offsets. The geological map shows that there are two important angular unconformities in the study area. The first one is the interformational basal unconformity of the Pisco Formation against folded, faulted, and planated Oligo-Miocene rocks of the Chilcatay Formation. The second is a low-angle intraformational erosional discontinuity of up to 4° angular discordance that allows the subdivision of the Pisco stratigraphy exposed in the study area into two informal allomembers. Dating of the exposed succession by diatom biostratigraphy suggests that the age of the lower allomember is late Miocene, whereas the upper allomember is late Miocene or younger
Voiding urosonography with ultrasound contrast agents for the diagnosis of vesicoureteric reflux in children: I. Procedure
Voiding urosonography (VUS) encompasses examination of the urinary tract with intravesical administration of US contrast agent (UCA) for diagnosis of vesicoureteric reflux (VUR). The real breakthrough for US examination of VUR came with the availability of stabilized UCAs in the mid-1990s. This article presents a comprehensive review of various procedural aspects of VUS. Different US modalities are available for detecting the echogenic microbubbles: fundamental mode, colour Doppler US, harmonic imaging and dedicated contrast imaging with multiple display options. The reflux is graded (1 to 5) in a similar manner to the system used in voiding cystourethrography (VCUG). The most commonly used UCA for VUS, Levovist, is galactose-based and contains air-filled microbubbles. The recommended concentration is 300 mg/ml at a dose of 5–10%, or less than 5%, of the bladder filling volume when using fundamental or harmonic imaging modes, respectively. There are preliminary reports of VUS using a second-generation UCA, SonoVue. Here the UCA volume is less than 1% of the bladder filling volume. There is no specific contraindication to intravesical administration of UCA. The safety profile of intravesical Levovist is very high with no reports of side effects over a decade of use in VUS
