Weak value amplification: a view from quantum estimation theory that highlights what it is and what isn't

Weak value amplification (WVA) is a concept that has been extensively used in a myriad of applications with the aim of rendering measurable tiny changes of a variable of interest. In spite of this, there is still an on-going debate about its true nature and whether is really needed for achieving high sensitivity. Here we aim at solving the puzzle, using some basic concepts from quantum estimation theory, highlighting what the use of the WVA concept can offer and what it can not. While WVA cannot be used to go beyond some fundamental sensitivity limits that arise from considering the full nature of the quantum states, WVA can notwithstanding enhance the sensitivity of real detection schemes that are limited by many other things apart from the quantum nature of the states involved, i.e. technical noise. Sistema basado en estimulación térmica y estimulación transcutánea para el tratamiento de la artrítis reumatoide

Describe el diseño y pruebas de un dispositivo electrónico para el tratamiento del dolor crónico mediante terapias combinadas de TENS y térmicas de contrasteEl dolor es una sensación desagradable, controlada por el sistema nervioso y como reacción ante un daño real del cuerpo o una falla del mismo sistema nervioso. El dolor sirve como mecanismo de protección para evitar más daño al cuerpo o para avisar que existe un desorden en algún sistema. Sin embargo, cuando se presenta una enfermedad como cáncer, artritis, lumbalgia, etc., el dolor causa más problemas que soluciones. Un dolor crónico o causado por un malfuncionamiento del sistema nervioso, causa en el paciente estrés, depresión, baja autoestima, pérdidas económicas por incapacidad y gastos considerables para el tratamiento. Los métodos actuales más comunes para el tratamiento del dolor son farmacológicos (causan efectos secundarios indeseables), quirúrgicos (muy costosos y como última solución) y alternativos (de eficacia limitada). En esta tesis se retoman las terapias alternativas más populares: terapias de contraste térmico y estimulación nerviosa eléctrica transcutánea (TENS por sus siglas en inglés) las cuales son comúnmente usadas por los terapeutas y otros profesionales de la salud para tratar el dolor. Se presenta una investigación sobre los principios básicos del dolor y los métodos actuales de tratamiento. Con base en ello propone el diseño y se describe la construcción de un prototipo para el tratamiento del dolor utilizando TENS y terapias térmicas simultáneamente

Explaining inflation and output volatility in Chile : an empirical analysis of forty years

We present a data oriented analysis of the effect of different kind of economic shocks on Chilean output growth and inflation over the last 40 years. Two important results are: (1) foreign shocks only explain 17% of the variability of the output growth in the period 1984-2006 whereas it used to account for the 47,2% of output variability in 1966-1983; (2) The participation of foreign shocks to explain the Chilean inflation reaction becomes more importan in the last twienty years because of the price liberalization and Chile's openness to international trade. Results highlight specific features of the Chilean economy not present in other countries.

How to automate a kinematic mount using a 3D printed Arduino-based system

We demonstrate a simple, flexible and cost-effective system to automatize most of the kinematic mounts available nowadays on the market. It combines 3D printed components, an Arduino board, stepper motors, and simple electronics. The system developed can control independently and simultaneously up to ten stepper motors using commands sent through the serial port, and it is suitable for applications where optical realignment using flat mirrors is required on a periodic basis.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

This paper looks into the political economy forces that helped shape exchange rate policy in Colombia since the early 1960s. As witnessed by the remarkable longevity of the managed crawl, Colombian exchange rate policies since 1967 did not take the form of major regime changes. Policy shifts came about through variations in the rate of crawl, varying degrees of administrative restrictions on capital flows and, on occasions, ad-hoc measures to generate multiple exchange rates.

Robustness: a new SLIP model based criterion for gait transitions in bipedal locomotion

Bipedal locomotion is a phenomenon that still eludes a fundamental and concise mathematical understanding. Conceptual models that capture some relevant aspects of the process exist but their full explanatory power is not yet exhausted. In the current study, we introduce the robustness criterion which defines the conditions for stable locomotion when steps are taken with imprecise angle of attack. Intuitively, the necessity of a higher precision indicates the difficulty to continue moving with a given gait. We show that the spring-loaded inverted pendulum model, under the robustness criterion, is consistent with previously reported findings on attentional demand during human locomotion. This criterion allows transitions between running and walking, many of which conserve forward speed. Simulations of transitions predict Froude numbers below the ones observed in humans, nevertheless the model satisfactorily reproduces several biomechanical indicators such as hip excursion, gait duty factor and vertical ground reaction force profiles. Furthermore, we identify reversible robust walk-run transitions, which allow the system to execute a robust version of the hopping gait. These findings foster the spring-loaded inverted pendulum model as the unifying framework for the understanding of bipedal locomotion.Comment: unpublished, in preparatio

Situación normativa de la Sociedad de la Información en Colombia

El presente artículo tiene como objetivo general describir la situación normativa de dos grandes temas de la Sociedad de la Información en Colombia: (i) el comercio electrónico, las firmas digitales y las entidades de certificación y (ii) los delitos informáticos y los delitos cometidos por computador. En tal sentido, proyecta la naturaleza extraterritorial inherente al fenómeno de la Sociedad de la Información, y compara las soluciones ya implementadas en el país con esfuerzos normativos realizados en otras regiones, así como los impulsados por organismos internacionales. El resultado de las consideraciones concluye que el desarrollo normativo de la Sociedad de la Información tiene que estar basado en la existencia de políticas públicas de largo plazo, que no rivalicen con el proceso globalizador. This article aims to describe the laws that regulate two main Information Society issues in Colombia: (i) e-commerce, digital signatures and certification authorities, and (ii) electronic crimes and crimes committed by electronic means. In this sense, the Information Society is projected as a cross-border phenomenon, and legal solutions implemented in Colombia are compared with those of other regions, as well as those promoted by international organizations. This analysis leads to the conclusion that a legal framework for the Information Society has to be based on the existence of long-term public policies, which do not run counter to the process of globalization
