Digital stories and emerging citizens' media practices by migrant youth in Western Sydney

This article provides a critical examination of community media practices by young recently arrived African refugees and Cambodian young migrants in Western Sydney, Australia. Against the backdrop of contemporary cultural politics of migration in Australia the article is grounded on a recent participatory community media research project conducted in 2008-2009, which aimed to conceptualise the emerging spaces for claiming new forms of citizen agency and contest the general representations of newly arrived migrants in the mainstream media. The paper argues that community media is better positioned to recognise changing attitudes towards migrants and refugees, and that these changes must also take place from the bottom up. Extending existing notions of citizens’ media the paper articulates a view that young media practitioners become active citizens in the exercise of their civil and communication rights and their selfrepresentation, by owning the process of content creation and communication, thus redefining the content (rather than the form) of what citizenship means in different social contexts

The Mediations of climate change: museums as citizens’ media

Social research underlines how the mass media frames and presents environmental change and risk in ways that become contested cultural constructs embedded in deep ideological structures. While significant attention has concentrated on the mass media, less consideration has been given to examining the role of museums and science centres in communicating the science of climate change. The article looks at museums as cultural brokers in collaborative efforts around public understandings of climate change. Engaging with recent conceptualizations around citizens and public media practices, it proposes participatory design mechanisms through which the museum sector can act as change-agents in fostering a new form of public pedagogy that incorporates differing civic epistemologies around climate change education and action

Análisis de los factores personales y laborales que contribuyen a los accidentes de la industria de la construcción en el Perú

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between individual and occupational risk factors and accidents at road construction sites in Lima, Peru. The research was conducted using a correlational design, analyzing the causes of accidents through safety inspection reports and independent accident investigations. The study population included all employees who suffered lost-time accidents during their workday. Associations between variables were determined using descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and comparative tables. The results suggest that personal and occupational factors contribute to accidents at road construction sites in Lima, Peru. After the root causes of accidents were identified and addressed, the accident rate decreased significantly in 2017 and 2018. Supervision was found to be the primary means of accident prevention, while leadership is essential to motivate workers to adhere to established standards of conduct.El propósito de esta investigación es examinar la relación entre los factores de riesgos individuales y laborales y los accidentes en las obras de construcción de carreteras en Lima, Perú. La investigación se llevó a cabo mediante un diseño correlacional, analizando las causas de los accidentes a través de informes de inspección de seguridad e investigaciones independientes de accidentes. Se incluyó en la población de estudio a todos los empleados que sufrieron accidentes con baja durante su jornada laboral. Las asociaciones entre variables se determinaron mediante estadísticas descriptivas, estadísticas inferenciales y tablas comparativas. Los resultados sugieren que tanto los factores personales como los laborales contribuyen a los accidentes en las obras de construcción de carreteras en Lima, Perú. Después de que se identificaron y abordaron las causas raíz de los accidentes, la tasa de accidentes disminuyó significativamente en 2017 y 2018. Se determinó que la supervisión es el principal medio de prevención de accidentes, mientras que el liderazgo es esencial para motivar a los trabajadores a adherirse a las normas de conducta establecidas

Framing the Futures of Australia in Space: Insights from Key Stakeholders

This report is a core output of the project Australia a Spacefaring Nation: Imaginaries and Practices of Space Futures, funded under the Australian Research Council’s Future Fellowship scheme (ft190100729) led by Juan Francisco Salazar, at Western Sydney University. This arc project investigates the challenges, opportunities, and implications of outer space as a site of economic, political, environmental, and cultural interest for Australia. This report presents key messages derived primarily from a set of 39 semi-structured interviews undertaken between October 2020 and May 2021 with 41 key actors in the Australian space sector. These actors represent a diverse range of perspectives from government, industry, science, law, and culture that constitute the space sector. The report explicitly aims to respond to the challenge of how to bring together the diversity that makes up the sector into a meaningful collective dialogue. The interviews were analysed between June and December 2021 together with a selection of relevant literature consisting of key industry reports, technical documents, and relevant opinion pieces. The writing and synthesis took place between October 2021 and February 2022. Following the ethics protocols of the project, all interview transcripts were anonymised and all selected extracts from the interviews have been de-identified in the report. The idea that guides this report is that space is a site of political, scientific, commercial, environmental, and cultural interest for Australia. Therefore, it is not a single domain of activities, nor there is a single collective vision about it. However, more than simply stating that space carries different meanings for various actors, our goal is to characterise that diversity and to provide elements to map it with the goal of enabling conversations across those meanings

Transmural versus non-transmural in situ electrical impedance spectrum for healthy, ischemic, and healed myocardium

Electrical properties of myocardial tissue are anisotropic due to the complex structure of the myocardial fiber orientation and the distribution of gap junctions. For this reason, measured myocardial impedance may differ depending on the current distribution and direction with respect to myocardial fiber orientation and, consequently, according to the measurement method. The objective of this study is to compare the specific impedance spectra of the myocardium measured using two different methods. One method consisted of transmural measurements using an intracavitary catheter and the other method consisted of nontransmural measurements using a four-needle probe inserted into the epicardium. Using both methods, we provide the in situ specific impedance spectrum (magnitude and phase angle) of normal, ischemic, and infarcted pig myocardium tissue from 1 kHz to 1 MHz. Magnitude spectra showed no significant differences between the measurement techniques. However, the phase angle spectra showed significant differences for normal and ischemic tissues according to the measurement technique. The main difference is encountered after 60 min of acute ischemia in the phase angle spectrum. Healed myocardial tissue showed a small and flat phase angle spectrum in both methods due to the low content of cells in the transmural infarct scar. In conclusion, both transmural and nontransmural measurements of phase angle spectrum allow the differentiation among normal, ischemic, and infarcted tissue.Peer Reviewe

Everyday mundane repair : banknotes and the material entanglements of improvisation and innovation

This article seeks to contribute to the conceptualization of everyday repair with a focus on banknotes, a ubiquitous and mundane technology in constant need of maintenance and repair. Through a design anthropology approach, we examine how practices of repairing banknotes are entangled with discourses of innovation that manifest in everyday life. This is complemented with a short ethnographic account of how damage, care and repair of banknotes in Chile are articulated through mundane everyday life activities

Aplicación de la guía PMBOK para reducir los costos de los proyectos de una empresa de construcción, Talara 2018

La presente investigación titulada “Aplicación de la guía PMBOK® para reducir los costos de los proyectos de una empresa de construcción - Talara 2018”, tuvo como objetivo general determinar en qué medida la aplicación de la guía PMBOK reduce los costos de los proyectos de una empresa de construcción - Talara 2018, en respuesta al problema general ¿En qué manera la aplicación de la guía PMBOK reduce los costos de los proyectos de una empresa de construcción Talara-2018?. La metodología empleada tuvo un enfoque cuantitativo, fue de tipo aplicada y diseño cuasi experimental. La unidad de análisis fue el área de obras y montaje constituida por dos proyectos de construcción metalmecánica similares, con sus costos durante 26 meses y la muestra se conformó por los costos mensuales, durante 26 meses, de dos proyectos similares. Para recolectar los datos se empleó como técnica la observación y la ficha de observación como instrumento. Se concluyó que la aplicación de la guía PMBOK reduce los costos de los proyectos de una empresa de construcción (p valor 0.011 < 0.05) y que la reducción fue de 8.89% respecto a los costos de proyecto planificado. Además, la aplicación de la guía PMBOK reduce los costos indirectos y los costos directos de los proyectos
