Educators and mental health professionals have promoted social and emotional learning (SEL) as the foundation for safe and positive education. SEL factors such as grit competency and growth mindset were the critical factors in this research, along with the student’s mental ability level. Grit competency pertains to one’s ability to work hard, overcome setbacks, finish tasks, and set long-term goals. At the same time, a growth mindset refers to believing intelligence and ability can change with persistence and practice and believing interests and behaviors can positively change with effort and learning. This research aimed to determine the grit and growth mindset levels of 137 all-female Filipino senior students from Quezon City and test their relationship with mental ability. A standardized test measured grit competency and growth mindset, while the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test, 7th Edition (OLSAT-7), measured cognitive ability. Results signified a low and negative relationship between grit competency and mental ability, with r = -.152 and p = 0.039 < 0.05. Similarly, there was a low and negative relationship between a growth mindset and cognitive ability with a value of r = -.157 and p = 0.034 < 0.05. Background and Objective: Surveillance technology allows family members to monitor older adults’ daily activities and their interaction with the home environment. In particular, video surveillance cameras and surveillance technology’s implementation raises critical ethical concerns due to their invasive and obtrusive nature. Thus, this paper aims to address the ethical issues regarding the use of video surveillance for older adults to age in place. Methods: A literature review is conducted using Springerlink, Sciencedirect, and PubMed Publications related to older adults’ care, ageing in place, and the use of surveillance technologies were included in this project. Results: A total of 19 publications met the inclusion criteria. Nine ethical issues emerged from the data: informed consent, privacy, conflict of interest, stigmatization and obtrusiveness, homogeneity among older adults, and imbalance relationship. These nine themes were further explored in respect to ethical principles, including autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice and fidelity) Conclusion: Although surveillance cameras can be invasive, well-grounded ethical thinking and proactive response help reduce the risk and ethical challenges associated with it. By examining the ethical issue in video surveillance, it helps to reflect and enhance the current legislation

This study aims to determine the attitudes and perceived competence level of 64 Filipino registered psychometricians with prior experience in psychological tele-assessment to conduct this service for their present and future clientele. Researchers used the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) that connects attitude and mental health services and a five-theme framework that discusses the factors or needs in facilitating successful tele-assessment. The results revealed a predominantly positive attitude toward psychological tele-assessment yet with the emergence of contradicting appraisals. Most tended to agree on the benefits of tele-assessment in addressing mental health concerns, but concerns about its flexibility, privacy, confidentiality, rapport, and communication were salient. Respondents reported high openness to conducting tele-assessment in the future but recognized that this was more challenging than the traditional assessment. They evaluated themselves with low confidence and were somewhat knowledgeable about the ethical issues involved in this service. Results further indicated low perceived competence to conduct tele-assessment. They expressed the need for more training, specific local guidelines, access to technology, and available online tests for tele-assessment. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every segment of life, including health, economy, education, and social ecologies. Quarantine measures have forced people to stay inside their homes, leading to the “new normal” of living and adaptation. One activity that has been among Filipinos during the onset of the lockdown until the present time is the increased engagement in gardening. Home gardening suddenly became a widespread activity in rural and urban areas. The use of the words “plantito” [male] and “plantita” [female] denote someone who enjoys taking care of plants. This qualitative study aims to explore and describe the rise of home gardening among Filipinos during the pandemic. A total of 104 participants answered an online survey containing open-ended questions. They described a “plantito/plantita” as a plant lover and nurturer and reported home gardening as a way of connecting with nature, a psychological experience, and an interest. The benefits include stress relief and improved mood. Further studies on home gardening and mental health and possible opportunities to incorporate this activity in communities are warranted

Regulation of P2X4 receptors by lysosomal targeting, glycan protection and exocytosis

The P2X(4) receptor has a widespread distribution in the central nervous system and the periphery, and plays an important role in the function of immune cells and the vascular system. Its upregulation in microglia contributes to neuropathic pain following nerve injury. The mechanisms involved in its regulation are not well understood, although we have previously shown that it is constitutively retrieved from the plasma membrane and resides predominantly within intracellular compartments. Here, we show that the endogenous P2X(4) receptors in cultured rat microglia, vascular endothelial cells and freshly isolated peritoneal macrophages are localized predominantly to lysosomes. Lysosomal targeting was mediated through a dileucine-type motif within the N-terminus, together with a previously characterized tyrosine-based endocytic motif within the C-terminus. P2X(4) receptors remained stable within the proteolytic environment of the lysosome and resisted degradation by virtue of their N-linked glycans. Stimulation of phagocytosis triggered the accumulation of P2X(4) receptors at the phagosome membrane. Stimulating lysosome exocytosis, either by incubating with the Ca(2+) ionophore ionomycin, for normal rat kidney (NRK) cells and cultured rat microglia, or the weak base methylamine, for peritoneal macrophages, caused an upregulation of both P2X(4) receptors and the lysosomal protein LAMP-1 at the cell surface. Lysosome exocytosis in macrophages potentiated ATP-evoked P2X(4) receptor currents across the plasma membrane. Taken together, our data suggest that the P2X(4) receptor retains its function within the degradative environment of the lysosome and can subsequently traffic out of lysosomes to upregulate its exposure at the cell surface and phagosome

Regulation of the localization and activity of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate 3-kinase B in intact cells by proteolysis

IP3K (inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate 3-kinase) catalyses the Ca(2+)-regulated phosphorylation of the second messenger Ins(1,4,5)P(3), thereby inactivating the signal to release Ca(2+) and generating Ins(1,3,4,5)P(4). Here we have investigated the localization and activity of IP3KB and its modulation by proteolysis. We found that the N- and C-termini (either side of residue 262) of IP3KB localized predominantly to the actin cytoskeleton and ER (endoplasmic reticulum) respectively, both in COS-7 cells and in primary astrocytes. The functional relevance of this was demonstrated by showing that full-length (actin-localized) IP3KB abolished the histamine-induced Ca(2+) response in HeLa cells more effectively than truncated constructs localized to the ER or cytosol. The superior efficacy of full-length IP3KB was also attenuated by disruption of the actin cytoskeleton. By transfecting COS-7 cells with double-tagged IP3KB, we show that the translocation from actin to ER may be a physiologically regulated process caused by Ca(2+)-modulated constitutive proteolysis in intact cells
