Geometrically nonlinear analysis of thin-walled composite box beams

    Get PDF
A general geometrically nonlinear model for thin-walled composite space beams with arbitrary lay-ups under various types of loadings has been presented by using variational formulation based on the classical lamination theory. The nonlinear governing equations are derived and solved by means of an incremental Newton–Raphson method. A displacement-based one-dimensional finite element model that accounts for the geometric nonlinearity in the von Kármán sense is developed. Numerical results are obtained for thin-walled composite box beam under vertical load to investigate the effect of geometric nonlinearity and address the effects of the fiber orientation, laminate stacking sequence, load parameter on axial–flexural–torsional response

A general geometrically nonlinear model for thin-walled composite space beams with arbitrary lay-ups under various types of loadings is presented. This model is based on the first-order shear deformable beam theory, and accounts for all the structural coupling coming from both material anisotropy and geometric nonlinearity. The nonlinear governing equations are derived and solved by means of an incremental Newton–Raphson method. A displacement-based one-dimensional finite element model that accounts for the geometric nonlinearity in the von Kármán sense is developed. A general analytical model applicable to flexural–torsional coupled vibration of thin-walled composite box beams with arbitrary lay-ups under a constant axial force has been presented. This model is based on the classical lamination theory and accounts for all the structural coupling coming from the material anisotropy. Equations of motion are derived from the Hamilton’s principle. A displacement-based one-dimensional finite element model is developed to solve the problem. Numerical results are obtained for thin-walled composite box beams to investigate the effects of axial force, fiber orientation and modulus ratio on the natural frequencies, load–frequency interaction curves and corresponding vibration mode shapes

The Duchenne muscular dystrophy gene and cancer

Background Mutation of the Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) gene causes Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy, degenerative neuromuscular disorders that primarily affect voluntary muscles. However, increasing evidence implicates DMD in the development of all major cancer types. DMD is a large gene with 79 exons that codes for the essential muscle protein dystrophin. Alternative promotor usage drives the production of several additional dystrophin protein products with roles that extend beyond skeletal muscle. The importance and function(s) of these gene products outside of muscle are not well understood. Conclusions We highlight a clear role for DMD in the pathogenesis of several cancers, including sarcomas, leukaemia’s, lymphomas, nervous system tumours, melanomas and various carcinomas. We note that the normal balance of DMD gene products is often disrupted in cancer. The short dystrophin protein Dp71 is, for example, typically maintained in cancer whilst the full-length Dp427 gene product, a likely tumour suppressor, is frequently inactivated in cancer due to a recurrent loss of 5’ exons. Therefore, the ratio of short and long gene products may be important in tumorigenesis. In this review, we summarise the tumours in which DMD is implicated and provide a hypothesis for possible mechanisms of tumorigenesis, although the question of cause or effect may remain. We hope to stimulate further study into the potential role of DMD gene products in cancer and the development of novel therapeutics that target DMD

Free vibration of axially loaded thin-walled composite beams with arbitrary lay-ups is presented. This model is based on the classical lamination theory, and accounts for all the structural coupling coming from material anisotropy. Equations of motion for flexural–torsional coupled vibration are derived from the Hamilton’s principle. The resulting coupling is referred to as triply coupled vibrations. A displacement-based one-dimensional finite element model is developed to solve the problem. Numerical results are obtained for thin-walled composite beams to investigate the effects of axial force, fiber orientation and modulus ratio on the natural frequencies, load–frequency interaction curves and corresponding vibration mode shapes

    Enhancing Recovery: Architecture that Heals

    Get PDF
This thesis will explore how architecture and the natural environment can aid in the recovery of one’s health by dissecting the current relationships between landscape and building, and its impact on healing. Traditional relationships of healing are explored to understand how those elements may be incorporated into modern healing. The project will focus on a design of a rehabilitation and wellness center in Bethesda, Maryland. Due to an existing ‘medical hub’ in the vicinity, the proposed building will assimilate well into the existing program on the site. The design is being approached by understanding what factors can contribute to healing including how views out the window, being immersed in nature, and materiality affect health. Biophilic design, healing gardens, and the senses in architecture are analyzed as means to effectively design healing spaces. Further primary observations of local hospitals and interviews with medical staff were conducted in order to grasp what the needs of the users in these spaces are

Can we use verbal estimation to dissect the internal clock? Differentiating the effects of pacemaker rate, switch latencies, and judgment processes

    Get PDF
Behavioural timing is frequently assumed to be based on the accumulation of pulses from a pacemaker. In humans, verbal estimation is often used to determine whether the effect of factors which influence subjective time become more pronounced at longer durations - that is, if they affect the slope of the judgment function, consistent with a change in the rate of the pacemaker. Here, participants judged blank intervals marked by two squares which either did or did not differ in size. In Experiment 1, a small change in marker size produced shorter temporal judgments than a large change. This effect was independent of objective duration and indicates that the slope changes seen in previous work are not an inevitable artefact of the verbal estimation procedure. However, Experiments 2 and 3 included conditions where the markers did not change size and established (a) that the effect of marker size depends on the other stimuli presented during the experiment, and (b) that slope effects occur even when they cannot possibly be due to a change in the rate of the pacemaker. Taken together, these results urge some caution in the use of verbal estimation as a methodology for deconstructing the putative internal clock

Survival of branching random walks in random environment

We study survival of nearest-neighbour branching random walks in random environment (BRWRE) on Z{\mathbb Z}. A priori there are three different regimes of survival: global survival, local survival, and strong local survival. We show that local and strong local survival regimes coincide for BRWRE and that they can be characterized with the spectral radius of the first moment matrix of the process. These results are generalizations of the classification of BRWRE in recurrent and transient regimes. Our main result is a characterization of global survival that is given in terms of Lyapunov exponents of an infinite product of i.i.d. 2×22\times 2 random matrices.Comment: 17 pages; to appear in Journal of Theoretical Probabilit
