    Four aspects of self-image close to death at home

    Living close to death means an inevitable confrontation with one's own existential limitation. In this article, we argue that everyday life close to death embodies an identity work in progress. We used a narrative approach and a holistic-content reading to analyze 12 interviews conducted with three persons close to death. By illuminating the unique stories and identifying patterns among the participants’ narratives, we found four themes exemplifying important aspects of the identity work related to everyday life close to death. Two of the themes, named “Inside and outside of me” and “Searching for togetherness,” represented the core of the self-image and were framed by the other themes, “My place in space” and “My death and my time.” Our findings elucidate the way the individual stories moved between the past, the present, and the future. This study challenges the idea that everyday life close to impending death primarily means limitations. The findings show that the search for meaning, new knowledge, and community can form a part of a conscious and ongoing identity work close to death

    Human immunoglobulin G levels of viruses and associated glioma risk

    Few consistent etiological factors have been identified for primary brain tumors. Inverse associations to asthma and low levels of varicella-zoster virus, immunoglobulin (Ig) levels in prevalent cases have indicted a role for the immune system in the development of glioma. Because samples from prevalent cases of glioma could be influenced by treatments such as steroids and chemotherapy, we investigated pre-diagnostic samples from three large Scandinavian cohorts. To test the hypothesis that immune response levels to these viruses are associated etiologically with glioma risk, we investigated pre-diagnostic immunoglobulin levels for cytomegalovirus (CMV), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), adenovirus (Ad), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) including the nuclear antigen (EBNA1) using plasma samples from 197 cases of adult glioma and 394 controls collected from population-based cohorts in Sweden and Denmark. Low VZV IgG levels were marginally significantly more common in glioma cases than the controls (odds ratio (OR) = 0.68, 95% CI 0.41–1.13) for the fourth compared with the first quartile (p = 0.06 for trend). These results were more prominent when analyzing cases with blood sampling at least 2 years before diagnosis (OR = 0.63, 95% CI 0.37–1.08) (p = 0.03). No association with glioma risk was observed for CMV, EBV, and adenovirus

    Factors influencing terrestriality in primates of the Americas and Madagascar

    Among mammals, the order Primates is exceptional in having a high taxonomic richness in which the taxa are arboreal, semiterrestrial, or terrestrial. Although habitual terrestriality is pervasive among the apes and African and Asian monkeys (catarrhines), it is largely absent among monkeys of the Americas (platyrrhines), as well as galagos, lemurs, and lorises (strepsirrhines), which are mostly arboreal. Numerous ecological drivers and species-specific factors are suggested to set the conditions for an evolutionary shift from arboreality to terrestriality, and current environmental conditions may provide analogous scenarios to those transitional periods. Therefore, we investigated predominantly arboreal, diurnal primate genera from the Americas and Madagascar that lack fully terrestrial taxa, to determine whether ecological drivers (habitat canopy cover, predation risk, maximum temperature, precipitation, primate species richness, human population density, and distance to roads) or species-specific traits (bodymass, group size, and degree of frugivory) associate with increased terrestriality. We collated 150,961 observation hours across 2,227 months from 47 species at 20 sites in Madagascar and 48 sites in the Americas. Multiple factors were associated with ground use in these otherwise arboreal species, including increased temperature, a decrease in canopy cover, a dietary shift away from frugivory, and larger group size. These factors mostly explain intraspecific differences in terrestriality. As humanity modifies habitats and causes climate change, our results suggest that species already inhabiting hot, sparsely canopied sites, and exhibiting more generalized diets, are more likely to shift toward greater ground use

    Genetic predisposition to mosaic Y chromosome loss in blood.

    Mosaic loss of chromosome Y (LOY) in circulating white blood cells is the most common form of clonal mosaicism1-5, yet our knowledge of the causes and consequences of this is limited. Here, using a computational approach, we estimate that 20% of the male population represented in the UK Biobank study (n = 205,011) has detectable LOY. We identify 156 autosomal genetic determinants of LOY, which we replicate in 757,114 men of European and Japanese ancestry. These loci highlight genes that are involved in cell-cycle regulation and cancer susceptibility, as well as somatic drivers of tumour growth and targets of cancer therapy. We demonstrate that genetic susceptibility to LOY is associated with non-haematological effects on health in both men and women, which supports the hypothesis that clonal haematopoiesis is a biomarker of genomic instability in other tissues. Single-cell RNA sequencing identifies dysregulated expression of autosomal genes in leukocytes with LOY and provides insights into why clonal expansion of these cells may occur. Collectively, these data highlight the value of studying clonal mosaicism to uncover fundamental mechanisms that underlie cancer and other ageing-related diseases.This research has been conducted using the UK Biobank Resource under application 9905 and 19808.     Single-Molecule Detection and Optical Scanning in Miniaturized Formats

    In later years polymer replication techniques have become a frequently employed fabrication method for microfluidic and micro-optical devices. This thesis describes applications and further developments of microstructures replicated in polymer materials. A novel method for homogenous amplified single-molecule detection utilizing a microfluidic readout format is presented. The method enables enumeration of single biomolecules by transforming specific molecular recognition events at nanometer dimensions to micrometer-sized DNA macromolecules. This transformation process is mediated by target specific padlock probe ligation, followed by rolling circle amplification (RCA) resulting in the creation of one rolling circle product (RCP) for each recognized target. Throughout this transformation the discrete nature of the molecular population is preserved. By hybridizing a fluorescence-labeled DNA detection oligonucleotide to each repeated sequence of the RCP, a confined cluster of fluorophores is generated, which makes optical detection and quantification possible. Spectral multiplexing is also possible since the spectral profile of each RCP can be analyzed separately. The microfluidic data acquisition process is characterized in detail and conditions that allow for quantification limited only by Poisson sampling statistics is established. The molecular characteristics of RCPs in solution are also investigated. Furthermore a novel thermoplastic microfluidic platform is described. The platform allows for observation of the microchannels using high magnification optics and also offers the possibility of on-chip cell culture and the integration of mechanical actuators. A novel fabrication process for the integration of polymer micro-optical elements on silicon is presented. The process is used for fabrication of a micro-optical system consisting of a laser and a movable microlens making beam steering possible. Such a micro-scanning system could potentially be used for miniaturized biochemical analysis

Med en engångskostnad för installation och maskin på €10 000  är investeringen räknad med en räntesats på 20 % insparad på cirka 10 år. De följande åren blir vid jämförelse med en oljepanna ren ekonomisk vinning. När även den grekiska regeringen har långt gångna planer på att införskaffa ett liknande ROT-avdrag för de greker som väljer att avveckla sin oljepanna och satsa på mer miljömässiga alternativ visar Thermia Värme AB att deras produkt har de ekonomiska aspekterna på sin sida istället för den redan befintliga oljan. Rapporten innehåller även en PESTLE-analys över den tilltänkta marknaden Grekland och en konkurrenskraftsanalys för att ge en överblick över hur attraktiv den tilltänkta marknaden man vill etablera sig på är. Genom PESTLE-analysen ser man att politikerna vill underlätta för utländska aktörer att etablera sig i Grekand, och speciellt om man är verksam inom den miljövänliga sektorn. Konkurrensanalysen tar bland annat upp hur stor köpkraft konsumenterna har vilken för tillfället är låg då konkurrensen på marknaden är låg. Samtliga analyser rapporten har behandlat får Grekland att framstå som en marknad med potential för en etablering.
