Objective: To identify the factors that influence changes in caregivers anxiety status three months after discharge for acute exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).Methodology: Longitudinal study. Participants included 87 caregivers of patients hospitalized for acute exacerbation of COPD. Anxiety was measured at the time of hospitalization and three months after discharge. We measured factors from four domains: context of care, caregiving demands, caregiver resources, and patient characteristics. We used multiple univariate and multivariate logistic regressions to determine changes in anxiety three months later. Univariate and multivariate multiple logistic regressions were used to determine changes in anxiety three months later. Results: A total of 57.5% of caregivers reported anxiety at the time of hospitalization. Of these, 44% had a remission of their anxiety three months after discharge. However, 22% of caregivers who had not experienced anxiety at the hospitalization became anxious at 3 months. The severity of COPD and not receiving help from another caregiver decreased the likelihood of remission of anxiety. Moderately high overload increases the likelihood of experiencing anxiety symptoms. Conclusions: The perception of anxious symptoms is dynamic. Caregivers are likely to recover from anxiety when they receive help from another caregiver and if the patient they are caring for does not have severe COPD.Objetivo: Identificar los factores que influyen en cambios en la ansiedad de los cuidadores tres meses después del alta hospitalaria por exacerbación aguda de la Enfermedad Pulmonar Obstructiva Crónica (EPOC).

The occurrence of photoinduced charge separation on the Rudcbpy-UiO-67(Zr) MOF has been proven visually by using methyl viologen as electron acceptor. Rudcbpy-UiO-67(Zr) behaves as a heterogeneous, reusable, photoredox catalyst promoting debromination of alpha-bromoketones with excellent selectivity at high conversions. Characterization data show that Rudcbpy-UiO-67(Zr) is stable under the photocatalytic reaction conditions.Financial support by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (CTQ2014-53292-R-AR, Severo Ochoa, CTQ2015-69153-CO2-R) and Generalitat Valenciana (Prometeo 2017/083) is gratefully acknowledged. Background: Numerous hypermethylated genes have been reported in breast cancer, and the silencing of these genes plays an important role in carcinogenesis, tumor progression and diagnosis. These hypermethylated promoters are very rarely found in normal breast. It has been suggested that aberrant hypermethylation may be useful as a biomarker, with implications for breast cancer etiology, diagnosis, and management. The relationship between primary neoplasm and metastasis remains largely unknown. There has been no comprehensive comparative study on the clinical usefulness of tumor-associated methylated DNA biomarkers in primary breast carcinoma and metastatic breast carcinoma. The objective of the present study was to investigate the association between clinical extension of breast cancer and methylation status of Estrogen Receptor1 (ESR1) and Stratifin (14-3-3-σ) gene promoters in disease-free and metastatic breast cancer patients. Methods: We studied two cohorts of patients: 77 patients treated for breast cancer with no signs of disease, and 34 patients with metastatic breast cancer. DNA was obtained from serum samples, and promoter methylation status was determined by using DNA bisulfite modification and quantitative methylation-specific PCR. Results: Serum levels of methylated gene promoter 14-3-3-σ significantly differed between Control and Metastatic Breast Cancer groups (P < 0.001), and between Disease-Free and Metastatic Breast Cancer groups (P < 0.001). The ratio of the 14-3-3-σ level before the first chemotherapy cycle to the level just before administration of the second chemotherapy cycle was defined as the Biomarker Response Ratio [BRR]. We calculated BRR values for the "continuous decline" and "rise-and-fall" groups. Subsequent ROC analysis showed a sensitivity of 75% (95% CI: 47.6 - 86.7) and a specificity of 66.7% (95% CI: 41.0 - 86.7) to discriminate between the groups for a cut-off level of BRR = 2.39. The area under the ROC curve (Z = 0.804 ± 0.074) indicates that this test is a good approach to post-treatment prognosis. Conclusions: The relationship of 14-3-3-σ with breast cancer metastasis and progression found in this study suggests a possible application of 14-3-3-σ as a biomarker to screen for metastasis and to follow up patients treated for metastatic breast cancer, monitoring their disease status and treatment response. This study was supported by a grant from the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación: SAF 2004-00889; JL Linares is supported by the Junta de Andalucía (P06-CTS-1385)

Data from: Wolbachia effects in natural populations of Chorthippus parallelus from the Pyrenean hybrid zone.

    No full text
We evaluate for the first time the effect of Wolbachia infection, involving two different supergoups, on the structure and dynamics of the hybrid zone between two subspecies of Chorthippus parallelus (Orthoptera) in the Pyrenees. Wolbachia infection showed no effects on female fecundity or a slight increment in females infected by F supergroup although in the last case it has to be well-established. Cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) is confirmed in crosses carried out in the field between individuals from a natural hybrid population. This CI, registered as the relative reduction in embryo production (sh), was of sh = 0.355 and sh = 0.286 in unidirectional crosses involving B and F supergroups, respectively. CI also occurred in bidirectional crosses (sh = 0.147) but with a weaker intensity. The transmission rates of the two Wolbachia strains (B and F) were estimated by the optimization of a theoretical model in order to reach the infection frequencies observed in certain population. To fit this scenario both supergroups should present transmission rates close to 1. Further, we have simulated the infection dynamics, and hence the capacity of Wolbachia to structure the population of the host insects, and to affect to reproduction and genetic introgression in the hybrid zone. This represents a first example of the influence of Wolbachia in an insect natural hybrid zone

Lactic acid production using cheese whey based medium in a stirred tank reactor by a ccpA mutant of Lacticaseibacillus casei

    No full text
In lactobacilli, CcpA is known to modulate the expression of genes involved in sugar metabolism, stress response and aerobic adaptation. This study aimed to evaluate a ccpA mutant of Lacticaseibacillus casei BL23 to increase lactic acid production using cheese whey. The ccpA derivative (BL71) showed better growth than the L. casei wild-type in the whey medium. In a stirred tank reactor, at 48 h, lactate production by BL71 was eightfold higher than that by BL23. In batch fermentations, the final values reached were 44.23 g L⁻¹ for BL71 and 27.58 g L⁻¹ for BL23. Due to a decrease in the delay of lactate production in the mutant, lactate productivity increased from 0.17 g (L.h)⁻¹ with BL23 to 0.80 g (L.h)⁻¹ with BL71. We found that CcpA would play additional roles in nitrogen metabolism by the regulation of the proteolytic system. BL71 displayed higher activity of the PepX, PepQ and PrtP enzymes than BL23. Analysis of prtP expression confirmed this deregulation in BL71. Promoter analysis of the prtP gene revealed CcpA binding sites with high identity to the cre consensus sequence and the interaction of CcpA with this promoter was confirmed in vitro. We postulate that deregulation of the proteolytic system in BL71 allows a better exploitation of nitrogen resources in cheese whey, resulting in enhanced fermentation capacity. Therefore, the ccpA gene could be a good target for future technological developments aimed at effective and inexpensive lactate production from dairy industrial wastes.Fil: Catone, Mariela Verónica.
