There is only one real reason to read [and write] a poem, and that is to find your way to a larger life than would otherwise be yours to live. Poetry is an instrument of discovery and transformation . This collection of poems is presented as three sections of a woman\u27s journey of discovery and transformation. The first section travels through loss and change, beginning with my father\u27s death, and ending with my child leaving home. The second section reflects on relationships--love in as many variations as snow. As a woman, I find myself as a solitary being in the world, and come to understand love as communion-with people, place, landscape, the creatures of the natural world--with all of life. In the third section, I leave my work and home of twenty years to study in Iowa. I set out on a new journey of travel and writing, towards a larger life I am hoping for

Occurrence of exercise-induced and spontaneous wide complex tachycardia during therapy with flecainide for complex ventricular arrhythmias: A probable proarrhythmic effect

Flecainide acetate, a new antiarrhythmic agent, possesses favorable pharmacokinetic and hemodynamic properties and demonstrates highly favorable antiarrhythmic activity in patients with ventricular arrhythmias. However, the proarrhythmic potential of flecainide deserves further evaluation. In 7 (13%) of 55 consecutive patients treated with oral flecainide, 200 to 600 mg/day, for complex ventricular arrhythmias (including sustained ventricular tachycardia in 14), we observed the appearance of new or more sustained exercise-induced (five patients) or spontaneous (two patients) wide complex tachycardia. The mechanism of wide complex tachycardia appeared to be ventricular tachycardia in all seven. In our series, episodes were self-remitting or successfully treated. In four patients, wide complex tachycardia did not recur during exercise testing during alternative antiarrhythmic therapy (three patients) or no antiarrhythmic therapy (one patient). These observations raise the possibility of flecainide-related proarrhythmia, manifested as an increased propensity to exercise (activity)-induced wide complex tachycardia, which was not reliably predicted by results of Holter recordings or programmed electrical stimulation. Patients with complex ventricular arrhythmias beginning long-term treatment with oral flecainide should be considered for treadmill exercise testing together with ambulatory monitoring as part of the initial assessment of drug efficacy.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/26728/1/0000278.pd

Gender Differences in Russian Colour Naming

    Get PDF
In the present study we explored Russian colour naming in a web-based psycholinguistic experiment (http://www.colournaming.com). Colour singletons representing the Munsell Color Solid (N=600 in total) were presented on a computer monitor and named using an unconstrained colour-naming method. Respondents were Russian speakers (N=713). For gender-split equal-size samples (NF=333, NM=333) we estimated and compared (i) location of centroids of 12 Russian basic colour terms (BCTs); (ii) the number of words in colour descriptors; (iii) occurrences of BCTs most frequent non-BCTs. We found a close correspondence between females’ and males’ BCT centroids. Among individual BCTs, the highest inter-gender agreement was for seryj ‘grey’ and goluboj ‘light blue’, while the lowest was for sinij ‘dark blue’ and krasnyj ‘red’. Females revealed a significantly richer repertory of distinct colour descriptors, with great variety of monolexemic non-BCTs and “fancy” colour names; in comparison, males offered relatively more BCTs or their compounds. Along with these measures, we gauged denotata of most frequent CTs, reflected by linguistic segmentation of colour space, by employing a synthetic observer trained by gender-specific responses. This psycholinguistic representation revealed females’ more refined linguistic segmentation, compared to males, with higher linguistic density predominantly along the redgreen axis of colour space

The 2018–2019 weak El Niño: Predicting the risk of a dengue outbreak in Machala, Ecuador

    Get PDF
Between October 2018 - May 2019, sea surface temperature conditions in the central-eastern tropical Pacific indicated a mild El Niño event. In May 2019, the global El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) forecast consensus was that these generally weak warm patterns will persist at least until the end of the northern hemisphere summer. El Niño and its impact on local climatic conditions in southern coastal Ecuador influence the inter-annual transmission of dengue fever in the region. In this study, we use an ENSO model to issue forecasts of El Niño for the year 2019, which are then used to predict local climate variables, precipitation and minimum temperature, in the city of Machala, Ecuador. All these forecasts are incorporated in a dengue transmission model, specifically developed and tested for this area, to produce out-of-sample predictions of dengue risk. Predictions are issued at the beginning of January 2019 for the whole year, thus providing the longest forecast lead time of 12 months. Preliminary results indicate that the mild and ongoing El Niño event did not provide the optimum climate conditions for dengue transmission, with the model predicting a very low probability of a dengue outbreak during the typical peak season in Machala in 2019. This is contrary to 2016, when a large El Niño event resulted in excess rainfall and warmer temperatures in the region, and a dengue outbreak occurred 3 months earlier than expected. This event was successfully predicted using a similar prediction framework to the one applied here. With the present study, we continue our efforts to build and test a climate service tool to issue early warnings of dengue outbreaks in the region

Anatomy of STEM Teaching in American Universities: A Snapshot from a Large-Scale Observation Study

    Get PDF
National and local initiatives focused on the transformation of STEM teaching in higher education have multiplied over the last decade. These initiatives often focus on measuring change in instructional practices, but it is difficult to monitor such change without a national picture of STEM educational practices, especially as characterized by common observational instruments. We characterized a snapshot of this landscape by conducting the first large scale observation-based study. We found that lecturing was prominent throughout the undergraduate STEM curriculum, even in classrooms with infrastructure designed to support active learning, indicating that further work is required to reform STEM education. Additionally, we established that STEM faculty’s instructional practices can vary substantially within a course, invalidating the commonly-used teaching evaluations based on a one-time observation

The Stress-Response Factor SigH Modulates the Interaction between Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Host Phagocytes

    Get PDF
The Mycobacterium tuberculosis stress response factor SigH plays a crucial role in modulating the pathogen's response to heat, oxidative-stress, envelope damage and hypoxia. We hypothesized that the lack of this key stress response factor would alter the interaction between the pathogen and its host cells. We compared the interaction of Mtb, Mtb:Δ-sigH and a strain where the mutation had been genetically complemented (Mtb: Δ-sigH:CO) with primary rhesus macaque bone marrow derived macrophages (Rh-BMDMs). The expression of numerous inducible and homeostatic (CCL) β-chemokines and several apoptotic markers was induced to higher levels in the cells infected with Mtb:Δ-sigH, relative to Mtb or the complemented strain. The differential expression of these genes manifested into functional differences in chemotaxis and apoptosis in cells infected with these two strains. The mutant strain also exhibited reduced late-stage survival in Rh-BMDMs. We hypothesize that the product of one or more SigH-dependent genes may modulate the innate interaction of Mtb with host cells, effectively reducing the chemokine-mediated recruitment of immune effector cells, apoptosis of infected monocytes and enhancing the long-term survival and replication of the pathogen in this milieu The significantly higher induction of Prostaglandin Synthetase 2 (PTGS2 or COX2) in Rh-BMDMs infected with Mtb relative to Mtb: Δ-sigH may explain reduced apoptosis in Mtb-infected cells, as PTGS2 is known to inhibit p53-dependent apoptosis. The SigH-regulon modulates the innate interaction of Mtb with host phagocytes, perhaps as part of a strategy to limit its clearance and prolong its survival. The SigH regulon appears to be required to modulate innate immune responses directed against Mtb
