    Oddziaływanie kwaśnego białka włókienkowego gleju i białka S100 w gruczolakach przysadki mózgowej: dwóch czy więcej graczy?

    Introduction: S100 protein and GFAP expression in pituitary adenomas tumour cells is not well known; few correlations with other prognostic or therapeutic factors have previously been reported in pituitary adenomas. We aim to elucidate their involvement in the pathogenesis of pituitary adenomas and to establish the correlation of their expression with different growth factors and growth factor receptors known to have a prognostic and/or therapeutic role. Material and methods: Sixty-one cases of pituitary adenomas were immunohistochemically assessed for the expression of GFAP and S100 protein in both tumour cells and FS cells, in close relationship with hormone profile, and correlated with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expression, previously studied by our team. Results: GFAP and S100 protein were expressed both in tumour cells and FS cells. Differences between morphology, distribution, and density of GFAP+ FS cells and S100+ FS cells were observed according to the hormone profile of pituitary adenomas. GFAP and S100 protein expression in tumour cells was significantly related to hormone profile of pituitary adenomas and also with VEGF and EGFR expression. Conclusions: GFAP and S100 protein expressions in tumour cells from pituitary adenomas are influenced by hormone profile. Our re­sults support the presence of two molecular subtypes of FS cells GFAP+/VEGF+/S100 respectively and another one that is GFAP-/S100+/EGFR+ simultaneously with the classical variant GFAP+/S100+. It is possible that S100+/EGFR+ pituitary adenomas represent a group of pituitary adenomas with an aggressive behaviour and a high ability of invasion and recurrence.Wstęp: Ekspresja białka S100 i kwaśnego białka włókienkowego gleju (GFAP, glial fibrillary acid protein) w gruczolakach przysadki mózgowej nie została dobrze poznana. Dostępne są nieliczne publikacje dotyczące korelacji tych cząsteczek z innymi czynnikami prognostycznymi lub terapeutycznymi w gruczolakach przysadki. Celem niniejszej pracy jest wyjaśnienie udziału tych białek w patogenezie gruczolaków przysadki i ustalenie korelacji między ich ekspresją a różnymi czynnikami wzrostu lub receptorami czynników wzrostu o znanej wartości prognostycznej i/lub terapeutycznej. Materiał i metody: Sześćdziesiąt sześć przypadków gruczolaka przysadki zbadano metodami immunohistochemicznymi w celu oceny ekspresji białek GFAP i S100 zarówno w komórkach guza, jak i w komórkach pęcherzykowo-gwiaździstych (FS, folliculo-stellate cells) oraz przeanalizowania uzyskanych wyników w ścisłej zależności z profilami hormonalnymi gruczolaków i w korelacji z ekspresją czynnika wzrostu śródbłonka naczyniowego (VEGF, vascular endothelial growth factor) i receptora naskórkowego czynnika wzrostu (EGFR, epidermal growth factor receptor), ocenianych w badaniu przeprowadzonym wcześniej przez nasz zespół. Wyniki: Ekspresję białek GFAP i S100 stwierdzono zarówno w komórkach guza, jak i w komórkach FS. Zaobserwowano różnice pod względem morfologii, rozkładu i gęstości komórek FS z dodatnią ekspresją białek GFAP i S100 (GFAP+FS i S100+FS) odpowiadające profilowi hormonalnemu gruczolaków przysadki. Ekspresja białek GFAP i S100 w komórkach guza była istotnie związana z profilem hormonalnym gruczolaków przysadki, a także z ekspresją VEGF i EGFR. Wnioski: Ekspresja białek GFAP i S100 w komórkach gruczolaka przysadki zależy od profilu hormonalnego guza. Uzyskane w badaniu wyniki potwierdzają obecność dwóch podtypów molekularnych komórek FS GFAP+/VEGF+/S100 oraz jednego typu GFAP–/S100+/EGFR+ występujących jednocześnie z klasycznym wariantem GFAP+/S100+. Możliwe, że gruczolaki przysadki z ekspresją S100+/EGFR+ należą do grupy tych nowotworów cechujących się agresywnością i dużą zdolnością do naciekania i nawrotów

    Characteristics of nocturnal urban heat island of Iaşi during a summer heat wave (1-6 of august 2017)

    This paper aims to investigate in details the specific of the nocturnal urban heat island in Iaşi city area during a particular heat wave in summer time. For this, we have conducted a series of expeditionary measurements on air temperature for the interval between 1 and 6 of August 2017 which was charaterized by excessive heat conditions. Air temperature measurements were made around midnight time and were performed along westeast transects crossing the city.The main results show an intensity of 3-4°C for the nocturnal urban heat island of Iaşi during heat wave condition. Beside this, the structure of the urban heat island was also influenced by the atmospheric stability which enhanced the occurence thermal inversion phenomena. In these conditions more dense cold air descends on the rivers valleys generating strong cooling of 4.0-5.0°C in low area of the city comparatively to the city center

    A lot of data suggests endocrine gland-derived vascular endothelial growth factor (EG-VEGF) to be restricted to endocrine glands and to some endocrine-dependent organs. Many evidences show that EG-VEGF stimulates angiogenesis and cell proliferation, although it is not a member of the VEGF family. At the time, a lot of data regarding the role of this growth factor in normal development are available. However, controversial results have been published in the case of pathological conditions and particularly in malignant tumors. Thus, our present paper has been focused on the role of EG-VEGF in normal tissues and various malignant tumors and their angiogenic processes

    Biological flora of Central europe: Baldellia ranunculoides (Alismataceae)

    Baldellia ranunculoides (L.) Parl. (Alismataceae) is a taxonomically problematic aquatic plant with an historically ill-defined distribution and global conservation status. This paper finds morphological, ecological and molecular evidence for two distinct taxa, probably best described as subspecies: (1) B. ranunculoides subsp. ranunculoides and (2) B. ranunculoides subsp. repens and provides detailed distribution data on their overlapping range, in different habitats, across the cool, high rainfall areas of western Europe and west Mediterranean. The two subspecies are amongst the relatively large number of threatened European and north Africa aquatic plants and this paper provides a systematic review of their relative conservation pressures and management needs, with particular emphasis on the status of both taxa in central Europe. Other observations indicate probable evolutionary relationships within B. ranunculoides s.l. and its associated taxa and the review points out where these and other research topics could potentially be pursued

    Kinetics of 1,6-hydrogen migration in alkyl radical reaction class

    The kinetics of the 1,6-intramolecular hydrogen migration in the alkyl radical reaction class has been studied using the reaction class transition state theory (RC-TST) combined with the linear energy relationship (LER) and the barrier height grouping (BHG) approach. The RC-TST/LER, where only reaction energy is needed, and RC-TST/BHG, where no other information is needed, are found to be promising methods for predicting rate constants for any reaction in the 1,6-intramolecular H migration in alkyl radicals reaction class. Direct comparison with available experimental data indicates that the RC-TST/LER, where only reaction energy is needed, can predict rate constants for any reaction in this reaction class with satisfactory accuracy

    Severe Drought Monitoring by Remote Sensing Methods and Its Impact on Wetlands Birds Assemblages in Nuntași and Tuzla Lakes (Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve)

    The present paper aims to highlight the impact of the partial or total drying of the Nuntași and Tuzla lakes (from the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve) as a result of intense drought phenomena on groups of waterfowl that are encountered in this region. Our analysis combined satellite remote sensing techniques with bird observations that were made monthly during the analyzed period, corroborated with the meteorological context of the time interval that was taken into account. The results of the satellite image processing show a partial drying in 2013 and a total drying in 2020 of the Nuntași and Tuzla lakes, which were caused by both natural factors (drought) and anthropogenic factors (inadequate management of the area—e.g.,: communication channels with surrounding lakes are clogged). These situations have led to repercussions for groups of birds, which behave differently depending on their ecology. Pelicans and swans are the most affected birds, they leave the area in the absence of water, whereas gulls and terns are not affected by the decrease in the water surface, they even increase their numbers in such conditions. Our study also shows that from 2010 to 2020 the largest numbers of birds (total numbers of birds), with the exception of pelicans, were recorded in 2013 and 2020, more precisely in the years when the water surface decreased considerably. Another important feature of this paper involves highlighting how fragile an ecosystem can be in the context of climate change, but also how important it is to involve human society in maintaining the adequate conditions for an ecosystem that is part of one of the most important biodiversity hotspots on the planet, the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve
