    Abstract in Chinese: 经济伦理学研究的重点在于用伦理规范积极地调节生产活动,从而在要求生产活动不能违背道德的同时帮助提高生产效率。生产伦理问题是经济伦理的基本问题之一。生产活动过程始终伴随着伦理规范过程。而为什么生产?如何生产?则是生产伦理基本问题所涉及的两个方面。生产伦理对于生产活动的调节以伦理学对于生产的总体评价为基础,其包括抽象生产和具体生产两个层面。生产伦理的调节就是通过对于具体生产的伦理调节,力图使具体生产以提高效率的方式服务于人类的美好生活。它包括宏观生产的伦理调节和微观生产的伦理调节。本文分析了两种生产伦理调节面临的主要问题,并就如何调节进行了探讨,提出了一些初步的意见。Abstract in English: the focus of economic ethics research is to actively regulate the production activities with ethical standards, so as to require the pro-duction activities can not go against the moral and help improve produc-tion efficiency. Production ethics is one of the basic problems of eco-nomic ethics. The process of production activity is always accompanied by the process of ethics. And why production? How to produce? It is the two aspects of the basic problem of production ethics. Production ethics for the production activities of the regulation to the production of the overall evaluation of the basis of the evaluation, which includes two levels of abstract production and specific production. The regulation of production ethics is to improve the efficiency of the production in order to improve the efficiency of the good life. It includes the ethical regula-tion of the macro production and the regulation of the micro production. This paper analyzes the main problems of two kinds of production ethics regulation, and puts forward some preliminary suggestions on how to adjust the regulation of the production. [pp.369-370

    An Artificial Intelligence Tool for Accessible Science Education

    One of the most important issues in accessible science education is creating a laboratory workspace accessible to blind students or students with visual impairments (VI). Although these students are often provided access to the science lectures, they are usually denied full participation in hands-on laboratory work. Current solutions to this problem focus on providing special accommodations such as asking sighted lab partners to complete the hands-on work. Although the accessibility of laboratory devices in modern science education has been improved in recent years, students with VI often remain passive learners. In this work, we developed a new artificial intelligence tool, the MSU Denver Virtual Lab Assistant (VLA), using Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon Alexa Skills Kit (ASK), Alexa smart speaker, and a microcontroller (Raspberry Pi). The VLA can be used as a virtual assistant in the lab in combination with other access technologies and devices. The VLA allows students with VI to perform the hands-on laboratory work by themselves simply using voice control. The VLA can be accessed through any smartphone or Amazon Echo device to assist general science lab procedures. The VLA is designed to be applicable to different science laboratory work. It is also compatible with other common accessible electronic devices such as the Talking LabQuest (TLQ). We believe that the VLA can promote the inclusion of learners with VI and be beneficial to general accessible science education work

    Pollen and Phytoliths from Fired Ancient Potsherds as Potential Indicators for Deciphering Past Vegetation and Climate in Turpan, Xinjiang, NW China

    It is demonstrated that palynomorphs can occur in fired ancient potsherds when the firing temperature was under 350°C. Pollen and phytoliths recovered from incompletely fired and fully fired potsherds (ca. 2700 yrs BP) from the Yanghai Tombs, Turpan, Xinjiang, NW China can be used as potential indicators for reconstructing past vegetation and corresponding climate in the area. The results show a higher rate of recovery of pollen and phytoliths from incompletely fired potsherds than from fully fired ones. Charred phytoliths recovered from both fully fired and incompletely fired potsherds prove that degree and condition of firing result in a permanent change in phytolith color. The palynological data, together with previous data of macrobotanical remains from the Yanghai Tombs, suggest that temperate vegetation and arid climatic conditions dominated in the area ca. 2700 yrs BP

    TCMGeneDIT: a database for associated traditional Chinese medicine, gene and disease information using text mining

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a complementary and alternative medical system in Western countries, has been used to treat various diseases over thousands of years in East Asian countries. In recent years, many herbal medicines were found to exhibit a variety of effects through regulating a wide range of gene expressions or protein activities. As available TCM data continue to accumulate rapidly, an urgent need for exploring these resources systematically is imperative, so as to effectively utilize the large volume of literature.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>TCM, gene, disease, biological pathway and protein-protein interaction information were collected from public databases. For association discovery, the TCM names, gene names, disease names, TCM ingredients and effects were used to annotate the literature corpus obtained from PubMed. The concept to mine entity associations was based on hypothesis testing and collocation analysis. The annotated corpus was processed with natural language processing tools and rule-based approaches were applied to the sentences for extracting the relations between TCM effecters and effects.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We developed a database, TCMGeneDIT, to provide association information about TCMs, genes, diseases, TCM effects and TCM ingredients mined from vast amount of biomedical literature. Integrated protein-protein interaction and biological pathways information are also available for exploring the regulations of genes associated with TCM curative effects. In addition, the transitive relationships among genes, TCMs and diseases could be inferred through the shared intermediates. Furthermore, TCMGeneDIT is useful in understanding the possible therapeutic mechanisms of TCMs via gene regulations and deducing synergistic or antagonistic contributions of the prescription components to the overall therapeutic effects. The database is now available at <url>http://tcm.lifescience.ntu.edu.tw/</url>.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>TCMGeneDIT is a unique database that offers diverse association information on TCMs. This database integrates TCMs with biomedical studies that would facilitate clinical research and elucidate the possible therapeutic mechanisms of TCMs and gene regulations.</p

    A game prototype for understanding the safety issues of a lifeboat launch

    © 2018 The Author(s) Novel, advanced game techniques provide us with new possibilities to mimic a complicated training process, with the added benefit of enhanced safety. In this paper, we design and implement a 3D game with the support of virtual reality equipment which imitates the process of a lifeboat launch, involving both tractor manoeuvres and boat operations. It is a complex but vital process which can save lives at sea but also has many potential hazards. The primary objective of the game is to allow novices to better understand the sequence of the operations and manage the potential risks which may occur during the launch process. Additionally, the game has been promoted to the general public for educational purposes and to raise awareness of the safety issues involved. The key modules of the game are designed based on physical simulations to give the players enhanced plausible cognition and enjoyable interaction. We conducted two case studies for the two purposes of the games: one for training with volunteers without launching experience and the other for public awareness of the potential hazards with young children. The game is proven to be very promising for future professional training, and it serves the educational purpose of awareness of the safety issues for general public while being entertaining

    Behavior and Impact of Zirconium in the Soil–Plant System: Plant Uptake and Phytotoxicity

    Because of the large number of sites they pollute, toxic metals that contaminate terrestrial ecosystems are increasingly of environmental and sanitary concern (Uzu et al. 2010, 2011; Shahid et al. 2011a, b, 2012a). Among such metals is zirconium (Zr), which has the atomic number 40 and is a transition metal that resembles titanium in physical and chemical properties (Zaccone et al. 2008). Zr is widely used in many chemical industry processes and in nuclear reactors (Sandoval et al. 2011; Kamal et al. 2011), owing to its useful properties like hardness, corrosion-resistance and permeable to neutrons (Mushtaq 2012). Hence, the recent increased use of Zr by industry, and the occurrence of the Chernobyl and Fukashima catastrophe have enhanced environmental levels in soil and waters (Yirchenko and Agapkina 1993; Mosulishvili et al. 1994 ; Kruglov et al. 1996)

    A novel single nucleotide polymorphism within the NOD2 gene is associated with pulmonary tuberculosis in the Chinese Han, Uygur and Kazak populations

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The present study aimed to investigate the genetic polymorphisms in exon 4 of the <it>NOD2 </it>gene in tuberculosis patients and healthy controls, in order to clarify whether polymorphisms in the <it>NOD2 </it>gene is associated with tuberculosis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A case-control study was performed on the Chinese Han, Uygur and Kazak populations. Exon 4 of the <it>NOD2 </it>gene was sequenced in 425 TB patients and 380 healthy controls to identify SNPs.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The frequency of T/G genotypes for the Arg587Arg (CGT → CGG) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in <it>NOD2 </it>was found to be significantly higher in the Uygur (34.9%) and Kazak (37.1%) populations than the Han population (18.6%). Also, the frequency of G/G genotypes for the Arg587Arg SNP was significantly higher in the Uyghur (8.3%) and Kazak (5.4%) populations than the Han population (0.9%). Meanwhile, no significant difference was found in the Arg587Arg polymorphism between the tuberculosis patients and healthy controls in the Uyghur and Kazak populations (<it>P </it>> 0.05) whereas, a significant difference was observed in the Arg587Arg polymorphism between the tuberculosis patients and healthy controls in the Han population (<it>P </it>< 0.01). The odd ratio of 2.16 (95% CI = 1.31-3.58; <it>P </it>< 0.01) indicated that the Arg587Arg SNP in <it>NOD2 </it>may be associated with susceptibility to tuberculosis in the Chinese Han population.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our study is the first to demonstrate that the Arg587Arg SNP in <it>NOD2 </it>is a new possible risk factor for tuberculosis in the Chinese Han population, but not in the Uyghur and Kazak populations. Our results may reflect racial differences in genetic susceptibility to tuberculosis.</p

    Hard Superconductivity of a Soft Metal in the Quantum Regime

    Superconductivity is inevitably suppressed in reduced dimensionality. Questions of how thin superconducting wires or films can be before they lose their superconducting properties have important technological ramifications and go to the heart of understanding coherence and robustness of the superconducting state in quantum-confined geometries. Here, we exploit quantum confinement of itinerant electrons in a soft metal to stabilize superconductors with lateral dimensions of the order of a few millimeters and vertical dimensions of only a few atomic layers. These extremely thin superconductors show no indication of defect- or fluctuation-driven suppression of superconductivity and sustain supercurrents of up to 10% of the depairing current density. The extreme hardness of the critical state is attributed to quantum trapping of vortices. This study paints a conceptually appealing, elegant picture of a model nanoscale superconductor with calculable critical state properties.     Inhibition of telomerase activity by HDV ribozyme in cancers

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Telomerase plays an important role in cell proliferation and carcinogenesis and is believed to be a good target for anti-cancer drugs. Elimination of template function of telomerase RNA may repress the telomerase activity.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A pseudo-knotted HDV ribozyme (g.RZ57) directed against the RNA component of human telomerase (hTR) was designed and synthesized. An in vitro transcription plasmid and a eukaryotic expression plasmid of ribozyme were constructed. The eukaryotic expression plasmid was induced into heptocellular carcinoma 7402 cells, colon cancer HCT116 cells and L02 hepatocytes respectively. Then we determine the cleavage activity of ribozyme against human telomerase RNA component (hTR) both in vitro and in vivo, and detect telomerase activity continuously.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>HDV ribozyme showed a specific cleavage activity against the telomerase RNA in vitro. The maximum cleavage ratio reached about 70.4%. Transfection of HDV ribozyme into 7402 cells and colon cancer cells HCT116 led to growth arrest and the spontaneous apoptosis of cells, and the telomerase activity dropped to 10% of that before.</p> <p>Conclussion</p> <p>HDV ribozyme (g.RZ57) is an effective strategy for gene therapy.</p
