    Emerging Populations: An Analysis of Twenty-First Century Caribbean Short Stories

    The Caribbean has always been a contested space, a space difficult to define, and the literary genre of the short story has always been difficult to define as well. As a region and as a genre, what they share is less prestige, and less development, than other regions and genres. This dissertation brings both of these elements together in a comparative literature study of three twenty-first century Caribbean short story anthologies from the three major linguistic traditions of the Caribbean (English, French, and Spanish). The distinguishing characteristic of these short stories, and the overarching framework for this study, is that of emergence, or more specifically, emerging populations. This builds on and critiques Frank O’Connor’s concept of submerged populations as a particularity of the short story genre. This dissertation examines the three anthologies from five different angles in order to show how contemporary Caribbean writers, as a whole, demonstrate the concept of emergence. Initially, though aware of and formed by the colonial past, they do not reveal an overall preoccupation with that legacy. Instead, they seek to establish their own literary agency and cultural identity in appropriating the short story genre, through truly Caribbean anthologies and through the genre of the fantastic. Finally, they also dialogue with social constructs and cultural structures such as gender, sex, space, and language in order to establish what their Caribbean is – emerging, as it were, from the past without abandoning it, and distinguishing themselves from others in the present, in order to construct their own future

    Forearm blood flow in individuals with CHF and age-matched healthy volunteers : a study and historical review

    This study examined forearm blood flow (FBF) in individuals with chronic heart failure (CHF) at rest, moderate exercise, and following limb occlusion. FBF was measured by venous occlusion plethysmography in CHF patients (n = 43) and healthy age-matched volunteers (n = 8) at rest and during exercise consisting of intermittent isometric hand squeezing at 15, 30, and 45% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Peak vasodilatory capacity was also determined following the release of an occluding arm cuff. FBF was lower in CHF patients during exercise and during peak reactive hyperemia (PRH) compared to healthy volunteers, but there was no significant difference between groups at rest. Peak vasodilatory capacity was significantly higher in healthy volunteers than the CHF group ((30.6 &plusmn; 8.6 ml&plusmn;100 mL-1&plusmn;min-1 and 18.3 &plusmn; 6.9 ml&plusmn;100 mL-1&plusmn;min-1, respectively). Local blood flow stimulation in response to exercise or limb occlusion is reduced in individuals with CHF, however, there was no difference in resting flows between the two groups, suggesting vasodilatory medication may restore resting blood flow to healthy values. <br /

    Taxonomy is the discipline responsible for charting the world’s organismic diversity, understanding ancestor/descendant relationships, and organizing all species according to a unified taxonomic classification system. Taxonomists document the attributes (characters) of organisms, with emphasis on those can be used to distinguish species from each other. Character information is compiled in the scientific literature as text, tables, and images. The information is presented according to conventions that vary among taxonomic domains; such conventions facilitate comparison among similar species, even when descriptions are published by different authors. There is considerable uncertainty within the taxonomic community as to how to re-use images that were included in taxonomic publications, especially in regard to whether copyright applies. This article deals with the principles and application of copyright law, database protection, and protection against unfair competition, as applied to images. We conclude that copyright does not apply to most images in taxonomic literature because they are presented in a standardized way and lack the individuality that is required to qualify as ‘copyrightable works’. There are exceptions, such as wildlife photographs, drawings and artwork produced in a distinctive individual form and intended for other than comparative purposes (such as visual art). Further exceptions may apply to collections of images that qualify as a database in the sense of European database protection law. In a few European countries, there is legal protection for photographs that do not qualify as works in the usual sense of copyright. It follows that most images found in taxonomic literature can be re-used for research or many other purposes without seeking permission, regardless of any copyright declaration. In observance of ethical and scholarly standards, re-users are expected to cite the author and original source of any image that they use

    Use of Redox Probes for Characterization of Layer-by-Layer Gold Nanoparticle-Modified Screen-Printed Carbon Electrodes

    The electrochemical characteristics of bare and surface-modified screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) were compared using voltammetric responses of common redox probes to determine the potential role of nanomaterials in previously documented signal enhancement. SPCEs modified with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by layer-by-layer (LbL) electrostatic adsorption were previously reported to exhibit an increase in voltammetric signal for Fe(CN)63−/4− that corresponds to an improvement of 102% in electroactive surface area over bare SPCEs. AuNP-modified SPCEs prepared by the same LbL strategy using the polycation poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) here were found to provide no beneficial increase in electroactive surface area over bare SPCEs. Though similar improvement in voltammetric signal of Fe(CN)63−/4− was found for AuNP/PDDA-modified compared to bare SPCEs in these studies, results with other redox couples ferrocene methanol (FcMeOH/FcMeOH+) and Ru(NH3)63+/2+ indicated no difference between the electroactive surface areas of modified and bare SPCEs. Furthermore, gold present on AuNP/PDDA-modified SPCEs accounted for only 62 (±12)% of the electroactive surface area. The previously reported improvement in electroactive surface area that was attributed to the inclusion of AuNPs on the SPCE surface appears to have resulted from a misinterpretation of the non-ideal behavior of Fe(CN)63− as a redox probe for bare SPCEs

    Modeling and Diagnostic Software for Liquefying-Fuel Rockets

    A report presents a study of five modeling and diagnostic computer programs considered for use in an integrated vehicle health management (IVHM) system during testing of liquefying-fuel hybrid rocket engines in the Hybrid Combustion Facility (HCF) at NASA Ames Research Center. Three of the programs -- TEAMS, L2, and RODON -- are model-based reasoning (or diagnostic) programs. The other two programs -- ICS and IMS -- do not attempt to isolate the causes of failures but can be used for detecting faults. In the study, qualitative models (in TEAMS and L2) and quantitative models (in RODON) having varying scope and completeness were created. Each of the models captured the structure and behavior of the HCF as a physical system. It was noted that in the cases of the qualitative models, the temporal aspects of the behavior of the HCF and the abstraction of sensor data are handled outside of the models, and it is necessary to develop additional code for this purpose. A need for additional code was also noted in the case of the quantitative model, though the amount of development effort needed was found to be less than that for the qualitative models

    Subjective Sleep Experience During Shuttle Missions

    It is now known that for many astronauts, sleep is reduced in spaceflight. Given that sleep is intimately tied to performance, safety, health, and well being, it is important to characterize factors that hinder sleep in space, so countermeasures can be implemented. Lessons learned from current spaceflight can be used to inform the development of space habitats and mitigation strategies for future exploration missions. The purpose of this study was to implement a survey and one-on-one interviews to capture Shuttle flyers' subjective assessment of the factors that interfered with a "good nights sleep" during their missions. Strategies that crewmembers reported using to improve their sleep quality during spaceflight were also discussed. Highlights from the interview data are presented here

    A new approach to high resolution, high contrast electron microscopy of macromolecular block copolymer assemblies

    Determining the structure of macromolecular samples is vital for understanding and adapting their function. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is widely used to achieve this, but, owing to the weak electron scattering cross-section of carbon, TEM images of macromolecular samples are generally low contrast and low resolution. Here we implement a fast and practically simple routine to achieve high-contrast imaging of macromolecular samples using exit wave reconstruction (EWR), revealing a new level of structural detail. This is only possible using ultra-low contrast supports such as the graphene oxide (GO) used here and as such represents a novel application of these substrates. We apply EWR on GO membranes to study self-assembled block copolymer structures, distinguishing not only the general morphology or nanostructure, but also evidence for the substructure (i.e. the polymer chains) which gives insight into their formation mechanisms and functional properties
