Final year project (FYP) paper is a compulsory to all UTP final year students. I am doing a FYP project titled "A Multimedia-Enhanced Expert System for Java Programming". This project focuses on developing an expert system which will be used in helping students solve error problems in Java Programming language. This report focus on the development of expert system, cover why it is developed, who need this system, when to use it, what are the problems occur during development, how the problems are solved and finally how the system benefit users at the end. The objective of this project is to come out with the Expert System for Java Programming. Recently, students are using the BlueJ application to compile a Java program and Java 2 SDK to execute the program. If some errors occurred during compiling and executing the program, it must be solved first to get the expected output. The problems here, students find that it is sometimes difficult for them to solved the errors occurred by only depending to the compiler. The compiler only gives the error messages. This system is developed and be expected to guide user in finding the correct solution for any errors occurred in Java programs. Targeted user for this system is UTP students. Throughout this report, the development and implementation of this project is deeply explained and elaborated.

Studying thermal performance of split-type air conditioners at building re-entrant via computer simulation / Fauziah Jerai and Ow Chee Sheng

Split-type air conditioners used in residential or office buildings often have the outdoor condensing units install at the sidewalls. In condominium or apartment buildings, the building re-entrants are the most frequent choice of the project team for placing the outdoor air-cooled condensing units. To avoid wastage in electrical energy and unnecessarily heat rejection to the environment, the HVAC engineer and the team should predict the thermal effect on the air-conditioners usage from the layout design stage. Additionally, the layout design is also continuously changing before the final design stage and this enhances the difficulty for the team to estimate the actual effect of placing over a hundred outdoor units inside one single re-entrant of a high rise building. In order to tackle this problem, a simulation approach is applied using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), (Phoenics v2008). The energy performances as well as the levels of thermal comfort for the proposed option were evaluated

Leptin and leptin receptor polymorphisms are associated with increased risk and poor prognosis of breast carcinoma

BACKGROUND: Leptin (LEP) has been consistently associated with angiogenesis and tumor growth. Leptin exerts its physiological action through its specific receptor (LEPR). We have investigated whether genetic variations in LEP and LEPR have implications for susceptibility to and prognosis in breast carcinoma. METHODS: We used the polymerase chain reaction and restriction enzyme digestion to characterize the variation of the LEP and LEPR genes in 308 unrelated Tunisian patients with breast carcinoma and 222 healthy control subjects. Associations of the clinicopathologic parameters and these genetic markers with the rates of the breast carcinoma-specific overall survival (OVS) and the disease free survival (DFS) were assessed using univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS: A significantly increased risk of breast carcinoma was associated with heterozygous LEP (-2548) GA (OR = 1.45; P = 0.04) and homozygous LEP (-2548) AA (OR = 3.17; P = 0.001) variants. A highly significant association was found between the heterozygous LEPR 223QR genotype (OR = 1.68; P = 0.007) or homozygous LEPR 223RR genotype (OR = 2.26; P = 0.001) and breast carcinoma. Moreover, the presence of the LEP (-2548) A allele showed a significant association with decreased disease-free survival in breast carcinoma patients, and the presence of the LEPR 223R allele showed a significant association with decreased overall survival. CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that the polymorphisms in LEP and LEPR genes are associated with increased breast cancer risk as well as disease progress, supporting our hypothesis for leptin involvement in cancer pathogenesis

A state of the art of required techniques for employing activated carbon in renewable energy powered adsorption applications

This paper reviews, for the first time, the measurement adsorption characteristics techniques to facilitate optimal testing of the validity of adsorbent materials in adsorption applications. Thermo-physical properties, adsorption characteristics and modelling techniques are presented. The characterisation of material thermo-physical properties includes true and bulk densities, specific heat capacity, surface area, pore volume distribution and thermal conductivity. The adsorption characteristics were categorized into adsorption isotherms and kinetics including experimental and theoretical equations. A range of models used in the simulation of adsorption cooling systems is presented and discussed. The paper highlights the conditions for which each measurement technique is most suitable and the limitations of modelling techniques, which is a vital element in the robust assessment of the performance of adsorption cooling units
