On the behaviour of B and Be stars at low metallicity

    Get PDF
We present new results obtained with the VLT GIRAFFE for a large sample of B and Be stars belonging to the Magellanic Clouds, i.e. at low metallicity. First, we show the effects of the metallicity of the environment on their rotation (linear, angular, and at the ZAMS). Second, we present the analysis of the effects of metallicity and evolution on the appearance of Be stars. We also new present results about the proportions of Be stars to B stars. Third, by cross-correlation with large photometric surveys such as MACHO and OGLE, we report on the detection for the first time of short-term multi-periodicity in 9 Be stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud, which can be interpreted in terms of pulsations.Comment: sf2a 2007 PNP

Discovering Model Transformation Pre-conditions using Automatically Generated Test Models

    Get PDF
International audienceSpecifying a model transformation is challenging as it must be able to give a meaningful output for any input model in a possibly infinite modeling domain. Transformation preconditions constrain the input domain by rejecting input models that are not meant to be transformed by a model transformation. This paper presents a systematic approach to discover such preconditions when it is hard for a human developer to foresee complex graphs of objects that are not meant to be transformed. The approach is based on systematically generating a finite number of test models using our tool, PRAMANA to first cover the input domain based on input domain partitioning. Tracing a transformation's execution reveals why some preconditions are missing. Using a benchmark transformation from simplified UML class diagram models to RDBMS models we discover new preconditions that were not initially specified

Environnement Collaboratif d'Adaptation pour le Télédiagnostic des Problèmes Vasculaires

    No full text

Precision nutrition : a review of personalized nutritional approaches for the prevention and management of metabolic syndrome

    Get PDF
The translation of the growing increase of findings emerging from basic nutritional science into meaningful and clinically relevant dietary advices represents nowadays one of the main challenges of clinical nutrition. From nutrigenomics to deep phenotyping, many factors need to be taken into account in designing personalized and unbiased nutritional solutions for individuals or population sub-groups. Likewise, a concerted effort among basic, clinical scientists and health professionals will be needed to establish a comprehensive framework allowing the implementation of these new findings at the population level. In a world characterized by an overwhelming increase in the prevalence of obesity and associated metabolic disturbances, such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, tailored nutrition prescription represents a promising approach for both the prevention and management of metabolic syndrome. This review aims to discuss recent works in the field of precision nutrition analyzing most relevant aspects affecting an individual response to lifestyle/nutritional interventions. Latest advances in the analysis and monitoring of dietary habits, food behaviors, physical activity/exercise and deep phenotyping will be discussed, as well as the relevance of novel applications of nutrigenomics, metabolomics and microbiota profiling. Recent findings in the development of precision nutrition are highlighted. Finally, results from published studies providing examples of new avenues to successfully implement innovative precision nutrition approaches will be reviewed

Alertness can be improved by an interaction between orienting attention and alerting attention in schizophrenia

Abstract

Background

Attention is impaired in schizophrenia. Early attention components include orienting and alerting, as well as executive control networks. Previous studies have shown mainly executive control deficits, while few of them found orienting and alerting abnormalities. Here we explore the different attentive networks, their modulation and interactions in patients with schizophrenia.

Methods

Twenty-one schizophrenic patients (DSMIV), compared to 21 controls, performed a modified version of the Attention Network Task, in which an orienting paradigm (with valid, invalid and no cues) was combined with a flanker task (congruent/incongruent) and an alerting signal (tone/no tone), to assess orienting, executive control and alerting networks independently.

Results

Patients showed an abnormal alerting effect and slower overall reaction time compared to controls. Moreover, there was an interaction between orienting and alerting: patients are helped more than controls by the alerting signal in a valid orientation to solve the incongruent condition.

Conclusion

These results suggest that patients with schizophrenia have altered alerting abilities. However, the orienting and alerting cues interact to improve their attention performance in the resolution of conflict, creating possibilities for cognitive remediation strategies.</p

Interhelical h-bonds modulate the activity of a polytopic transmembrane kinase

DesK is a Histidine Kinase that allows Bacillus subtilis to maintain lipid homeostasis in response to changes in the environment. It is located in the membrane, and has five transmembrane helices and a cytoplasmic catalytic domain. The transmembrane region triggers the phosphorylation of the catalytic domain as soon as the membrane lipids rigidify. In this research, we study how transmembrane inter-helical interactions contribute to signal transmission; we designed a coexpression system that allows studying in vivo interactions between transmembrane helices. By Alanine-replacements, we identified a group of polar uncharged residues, whose side chains contain hydrogen-bond donors or acceptors, which are required for the interaction with other DesK transmembrane helices; a particular array of H-bond- residues plays a key role in signaling, transmitting information detected at the membrane level into the cell to finally trigger an adaptive response.Fil: Almada, Juan Cruz. B stars population in the field of the Large Magellanic Cloud NGC2004: first results with VLT-FLAMES.

    Get PDF
This document presents our very first results on a part of the program: "A study of the Be phenomenon in young open Galactic and Magellanic clusters". It concerns the B stars population in the LMC NGC2004 cluster and its surrounding field observed with the VLT/FLAMES instrumentation with the GIRAFFE spectrograph, at low resolution, in MEDUSA mode. First observational results which concern the ratio BeB+Be\frac{Be}{B+Be} , the nebulosities in the field and the discovery of spectrocopic binaries are presented
