    Get PDF
In every mathematical proof logically correct arguments are used; it is a necessary condition to find out them, and also to recognize how they are applied, for understanding some of the key steps in the demonstrations. But can a student clearly identify the arguments used in a demonstration? And if he recognizes them, is he able to explain how they were used? The aim of this paper is to explore if mathematics' and computer science's students -who have met demonstrations at their university, master or even doctoral courses- can successfully identify and explain the arguments within a demonstration

Personal UV Exposure for Different Outdoor Sports

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the major environmental risk factor in the development of skin cancers and it occurs mainly during outdoor activities. The purpose of this study is to quantify the UV exposure suffered by amateur athletes (tennis players, hikers and runners) in their training schedules. The study on tennis player exposure took place at a tennis club in Valencia during the month of June 2011. With respect to the hiking group, the hikes studied took place in several mountainous areas of Spain and France from June to August 2011. Finally, the exposure suffered by ten runners, while participating in a running circuit in the province of Valencia, from March to November 2011, was studied. The athletes were monitored using personal dosimeters (VioSpor), with the tennis players and runners wearing them on the wrist, and the hikers on the shoulder. The median daily personal UV exposure for the hikers was 8.1 Standard Erythema Dose (SED), and for the tennis players 7.5 SED, per day of training. The runners received a median of 14.6 SED while participating in the running circuit, and about 2 SED per competition day. Median daily UV exposure of the hikers and tennis players exceeded 5 SED, which means that, in the case of non sun-adapted skin type III and the non-use of sun protection, erythema may be induced in these subjects. However, the exposure suffered by the runners did not exceed the maximum personal exposure of 5 SED. Accordingly, it is necessary to encourage the use of high protection sunscreens and protective clothing, and to avoid UV exposure in the hottest part of the day. This research was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science as part of research project CGL2010-15931 and the Generalitat Valenciana as part of project PROMETEO/2010/064.Serrano Jareño, MA.; Cañada, J.; Moreno, J.; Gurrea Ysasi, G. Multi-Gbps HTTP traffic analysis in commodity hardware based on local knowledge of TCP streams

    Get PDF
In this paper we propose and implement novel techniques for performance evaluation of web traffic (response time, response code, etc.), with no reassembly of the underlying TCP connection, which severely restricts the traffic analysis throughput. Furthermore, our proposed software for HTTP traffic analysis runs in standard hardware, which is very cost-effective. Besides, we present sub-TCP connection load balancing techniques that significantly increase throughput at the expense of losing very few HTTP transactions. Such techniques provide performance evaluation statistics which are indistinguishable from the single-threaded alternative with full TCP connection reassembly. © 2017 Elsevier B.V

The present research analyzes the state of the art of remote laboratories and their use in teaching and industry. In addition, the aim of this study is to develop a test bench to control and maintain, in optimal conditions, the operating parameters of a hydraulic oil system through an open source virtual platform. This equipment will analyze the behavior of an external gear pump which will enable us to make comparisons of mathematical models to predict the flow rate and compare it with that obtained in real time through the test bench. The analysis starts with a theoretical revision that is used for defining the variables to be controlled in the test bench. It is also used to propose a methodology that allows reaching the objectives raised

A unique keystroke biometric dataset was collected that includes freely-typed long-text samples from 64 subjects. Samples were collected to simulate normal typing behavior and the severe handicap of only being able to type with one hand. Competition participants designed classification models trained on the normally-typed samples in an attempt to classify an unlabeled dataset that consists of normally-typed and one-handed samples. Participants competed against each other to obtain the highest classification accuracies and submitted classification results through an online system similar to Kaggle. The classification results and top performing strategies are described. The authors would like to acknowledge the support from the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 1241585.
