    Prevalence, associated factors and outcomes of pressure injuries in adult intensive care unit patients: the DecubICUs study

Epidemiologic data is however unavailable. We aimed to provide an international picture of the extent of pressure injuries and factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries in adult ICU patients. Methods: International 1-day point-prevalence study; follow-up for outcome assessment until hospital discharge (maximum 12 weeks). Factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injury and hospital mortality were assessed by generalised linear mixed-effects regression analysis. Results: Data from 13,254 patients in 1117 ICUs (90 countries) revealed 6747 pressure injuries; 3997 (59.2%) were ICU-acquired. Overall prevalence was 26.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 25.9–27.3). ICU-acquired prevalence was 16.2% (95% CI 15.6–16.8). Sacrum (37%) and heels (19.5%) were most affected. Factors independently associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries were older age, male sex, being underweight, emergency surgery, higher Simplified Acute Physiology Score II, Braden score 3 days, comorbidities (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, immunodeficiency), organ support (renal replacement, mechanical ventilation on ICU admission), and being in a low or lower-middle income-economy. Gradually increasing associations with mortality were identified for increasing severity of pressure injury: stage I (odds ratio [OR] 1.5; 95% CI 1.2–1.8), stage II (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.4–1.9), and stage III or worse (OR 2.8; 95% CI 2.3–3.3). Conclusion: Pressure injuries are common in adult ICU patients. ICU-acquired pressure injuries are associated with mainly intrinsic factors and mortality. Optimal care standards, increased awareness, appropriate resource allocation, and further research into optimal prevention are pivotal to tackle this important patient safety threat

    Wireless Web Kids (WW-kids) is an approved project with financial support of the Flemish government, Economics Department. The project started in December 2007 and runs till December 2010. Main purpose is to motivate children for studying sciences and technology. In Belgium there is a lack of students studying engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, technology and informatics. The project aims to enlarge the knowledge of children in primary and secondary education in the field of ICT in general, and new technologies as mobile devices for learning in particular. In the project students will learn and study with WEB 2.0 applications, using mobile devices. After the project children will have a clear inside how mobile devices can contribute to learning and working. The project is supported by companies and research units of the University of Hasselt

    Digital Portfolio: a Strategy for Teachers Professional Development

    Abstractâ??Teachers have to work with e-portfolio with their students. This is a very demanding task because they never were educated with e-portfolio themselves. Therefore a European Comenius project was submitted in 2005. In this approved project a whole week formation (april 2007) was offered to nineteen teachers from all over Europe. A year later they will meet again to see in what way the course has had effects on their work with e-portfolio and students. Most interesting to notice was that the basic ICT-skills of teachers are nowadays realized. However teachers are still busy with text and text-files. Rarely they uploaded multimedia, like e.g. photoâ??s, videoâ??s, youtube-movies, â?¦ in their e-portfolio. The essential element of an e-portfolio, the personal and professional development plan, that forms the backbone of the e-portfolio and offers the possibility to make the e-portfolio an effective learning instrument was unknown

    Glycan-Functionalized Microgels for Scavenging and Specific Binding of Lectins

    Lectins are proteins with a well-defined carbohydrate recognition domain. Many microbial proteins such as bacterial toxins possess lectin or lectin-like binding domains to interact with cell membranes that are decorated with glycan recognition motifs. We report a straightforward way to prepare monodisperse and biocompatible polyethylene glycol microgels, which carry glycan motifs for specific binding to lectins. The sugar-functionalized colloids exhibit a wide mesh size and a highly accessible volume. The microgels are prepared via drop-based microfluidics combined with radical polymerization. GSII and ECL are used as model lectins that bind specifically to the corresponding carbohydrates, namely, GlcNAc and LacNAc. LacNAc microgels bind ECL with a high capacity and high affinity (<i>K</i><sub>d</sub> ≈ 0.5 to 1 μM), suggesting multivalent binding of the lectin to the LacNAc-decorated flexible microgel network. Glycan-functionalized microgels present a useful tool for lectin scavenging in biomedical applications

    Integration of microelectronics with microfluidics enables sophisticated lab-on-a-chip devices for sensing and actuation. In this paper, we investigate a novel method for in-situ microfluidics fabrication and packaging on wafer level. Two novel photo-patternable adhesive polymers were tested and compared, PA-S500H and DXL-009. The microfluidics fabrication method employs photo lithographical patterning of spin coated polymer films of PA or DXL and direct bonding of formed microfluidics to a top glass cover using die-to-wafer level bonding. These new adhesive materials remove the need for additional gluing layers. With this approach, we fabricated disposable microfluidic flow cytometers and evaluated the performance of those materials in the context of this application. DXL-009 exhibits lower autofluorescence compared to PA-S500H which improves detection sensitivity of fluorescently stained cells. Results obtained from the cytotoxicity test reveals that both materials are biocompatible. The functionality of these materials was demonstrated by detection of immunostained monocytes in microfluidic flow cytometers. The flexible, fully CMOS compatible fabrication process of these photo-patternable adhesive materials will simplify prototyping and mass manufacturing of sophisticated microfluidic devices with integrated microelectronics.status: publishe

    Org 214007-0: a novel non-steroidal selective glucocorticoid receptor modulator with full anti-inflammatory properties and improved therapeutic index

    Contains fulltext : 103595.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)Glucocorticoids (GCs) such as prednisolone are potent immunosuppressive drugs but suffer from severe adverse effects, including the induction of insulin resistance. Therefore, development of so-called Selective Glucocorticoid Receptor Modulators (SGRM) is highly desirable. Here we describe a non-steroidal Glucocorticoid Receptor (GR)-selective compound (Org 214007-0) with a binding affinity to GR similar to that of prednisolone. Structural modelling of the GR-Org 214007-0 binding site shows disturbance of the loop between helix 11 and helix 12 of GR, confirmed by partial recruitment of the TIF2-3 peptide. Using various cell lines and primary human cells, we show here that Org 214007-0 acts as a partial GC agonist, since it repressed inflammatory genes and was less effective in induction of metabolic genes. More importantly, in vivo studies in mice indicated that Org 214007-0 retained full efficacy in acute inflammation models as well as in a chronic collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) model. Gene expression profiling of muscle tissue derived from arthritic mice showed a partial activity of Org 214007-0 at an equi-efficacious dosage of prednisolone, with an increased ratio in repression versus induction of genes. Finally, in mice Org 214007-0 did not induce elevated fasting glucose nor the shift in glucose/glycogen balance in the liver seen with an equi-efficacious dose of prednisolone. All together, our data demonstrate that Org 214007-0 is a novel SGRMs with an improved therapeutic index compared to prednisolone. This class of SGRMs can contribute to effective anti-inflammatory therapy with a lower risk for metabolic side effects
