    Running coupling and power corrections in nonlinear evolution at the high-energy limit.

    A main feature of high-energy scattering in QCD is saturation in the number density of gluons. This phenomenon is described by non-linear evolution equations, JIMWLK and BK, which have been derived at leading logarithmic accuracy. In this paper we generalize this framework to include running coupling corrections to the evolution kernel. We develop a dispersive representation of the dressed gluon propagator in the background of Weisz¨acker Williams fields and use it to compute O(βn−1 0 αns ) corrections to the kernel to all orders in perturbation theory. The resummed kernels present infrared-renormalon ambiguities, which are indicative of the form and importance of non-perturbative power corrections. We investigate numerically the effect of the newly computed perturbative corrections as well as the power corrections on the evolution and find that at present energies they are both significant

    GABA(B) receptor positive allosteric modulators with different efficacies affect neuroadaptation to and self-administration of alcohol and cocaine

    Drugs of abuse induce widespread synaptic adaptations in the mesolimbic dopamine (DA) neurons. Such drug-induced neuroadaptations may constitute an initial cellular mechanism eventually leading to compulsive drug-seeking behavior. To evaluate the impact of GABA(B) receptors on addiction-related persistent neuroplasticity, we tested the ability of orthosteric agonist baclofen and two positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) of GABA(B) receptors to suppress neuroadaptations in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and reward-related behaviors induced by ethanol and cocaine. A novel compound (S)-1-(5-fluoro-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-2-yl)-4-methyl-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-a]quinazolin-5(4H)-one (ORM-27669) was found to be a GABA(B) PAM of low efficacy as agonist, whereas the reference compound (R,S)-5,7-di-tert-butyl-3-hydroxy-3-trifluoromethyl-3H-benzofuran-2-one (rac-BHFF) had a different allosteric profile being a more potent PAM in the calcium-based assay and an agonist, coupled with potent PAM activity, in the [S-35] GTP gamma S binding assay in rat and human recombinant receptors. Using autoradiography, the high-efficacy rac-BHFF and the low-efficacy ORM-27669 potentiated the effects of baclofen on [S-35] GTP gamma S binding with identical brain regional distribution. Treatment of mice with baclofen, rac-BHFF, or ORM-27669 failed to induce glutamate receptor neuroplasticity in the VTA DA neurons. Pretreatment with rac-BHFF at non-sedative doses effectively reversed both ethanol- and cocaine-induced plasticity and attenuated cocaine i.v. self-administration and ethanol drinking. Pretreatment with ORM-27669 only reversed ethanol-induced neuroplasticity and attenuated ethanol drinking but had no effects on cocaine-induced neuroplasticity or self-administration. These findings encourage further investigation of GABA(B) receptor PAMs with different efficacies in addiction models to develop novel treatment strategies for drug addiction.Peer reviewe

    Subleading-N_c corrections in non-linear small-x evolution

    We explore the subleading-N_c corrections to the large-N_c Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) evolution equation by comparing its solution to that of the all-N_c Jalilian-Marian-Iancu-McLerran-Weigert-Leonidov-Kovner (JIMWLK) equation. In earlier simulations it was observed that the difference between the solutions of JIMWLK and BK is unusually small for a quark dipole scattering amplitude, of the order of 0.1%, which is two orders of magnitude smaller than the naively expected 1/N_c^2 or 11%. In this paper we argue that this smallness is not accidental. We show that saturation effects and correlator coincidence limits fixed by group theory constraints conspire with the particular structure of the dipole kernel to suppress subleading-N_c corrections reducing the difference between the solutions of JIMWLK and BK to 0.1%. We solve the JIMWLK equation with improved numerical accuracy and verify that the remaining 1/N_c corrections, while small, still manage to slow down the rapidity-dependence of JIMWLK evolution compared to that of BK. We demonstrate that a truncation of JIMWLK evolution in the form of a minimal Gaussian generalization of the BK equation captures some of the remaining 1/N_c contributions leading to an even better agreement with JIMWLK evolution. As the 1/N_c corrections to BK include multi-reggeon exchanges one may conclude that the net effect of multi-reggeon exchanges on the dipole amplitude is rather small.Comment: discussion of phase space regions streamlined, version to be published in NP

    HERA-data in the light of small x evolution with state of the art NLO input

    Both total and diffractive cross sections from HERA are successfully confronted with JIMWLK evolution equations in the asymptotic pseudo-scaling region. We present a consistent, simultaneous description of both types of cross sections that includes NLO corrections in the form of running coupling and energy conservation corrections. The inclusion of energy conservation corrections allows to match all available data with x below .02 i.e. up to Q^2 of 1200 GeV^2. We discuss the effects of quark masses including charm, contrast asymptotic and pre-asymptotic fit strategies, and survey non-perturbative uncertainties related to impact parameter dependence.Comment: 61 pages, 27 figure

    X-chromosome and kidney function:evidence from a multi-trait genetic analysis of 908,697 individuals reveals sex-specific and sex-differential findings in genes regulated by androgen response elements

    X-chromosomal genetic variants are understudied but can yield valuable insights into sexually dimorphic human traits and diseases. We performed a sex-stratified cross-ancestry X-chromosome-wide association meta-analysis of seven kidney-related traits (n = 908,697), identifying 23 loci genome-wide significantly associated with two of the traits: 7 for uric acid and 16 for estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), including four novel eGFR loci containing the functionally plausible prioritized genes ACSL4, CLDN2, TSPAN6 and the female-specific DRP2. Further, we identified five novel sex-interactions, comprising male-specific effects at FAM9B and AR/EDA2R, and three sex-differential findings with larger genetic effect sizes in males at DCAF12L1 and MST4 and larger effect sizes in females at HPRT1. All prioritized genes in loci showing significant sex-interactions were located next to androgen response elements (ARE). Five ARE genes showed sex-differential expressions. This study contributes new insights into sex-dimorphisms of kidney traits along with new prioritized gene targets for further molecular research.</p

    Reliability of Biodegradation Measurements for Inhibitive Industrial Wastewaters

    Industrial wastewaters may contain toxic or highly inhibitive compounds, which makes the measurement of biological oxygen demand (BOD) challenging. Due to the high concentration of organic compounds within them, industrial wastewater samples must be diluted to perform BOD measurements. This study focused on determining the reliability of wastewater BOD measurement using two different types of industrial wastewater, namely pharmaceutical wastewater containing a total organic carbon (TOC) value of 34,000 mg(C)/L and industrial paper manufacturing wastewater containing a corresponding TOC value of 30 mg(C)/L. Both manometric respirometry and the closed-bottle method were used in the study, and the results were compared. It was found that the dilution wastewaters containing inhibitive compounds affected BOD values, which increased due to the decreased inhibiting effect of wastewater pollutants. Therefore, the correct BOD for effluents should be measured from undiluted samples, while the diluted value is appropriate for determining the maximum value for biodegradable organic material in the effluent. The accuracy of the results from the blank samples was also examined, and it was found that the readings of these were different to those from the samples. Therefore, the blank value that must be subtracted may differ depending on the sample

    Bioavailability of nutrients and harmful elements in ash fertilizers:effect of granulation

    Abstract Environmental policies of the European Union (EU) aim to increase the amount of renewable energy and to improve the use of waste streams. This will increase the amount of fly ash (FA) from biomass combustion, thereby increasing the need for its utilization. Biomass FA is a good fertilizer since it contains most of the nutrients that plants need. Sequential leaching would provide a more accurate assessment of the potential bioavailability of the harmful elements and nutrients than the pseudo-total and/or water-soluble concentration analysis that EU environmental legislation typically requires. This study investigated the effect of granulation and ammonium sulfate addition on the solubility and bioavailability of nutrients and harmful elements from peat and wood co-combustion FA by using sequential leaching and pseudo-total acid digestion. The recoveries of the easily bioavailable nutrients Ca, K, Mg, P, and S as well as the total bioavailability of Ca, K, Mg, and S reduced significantly after granulation. Therefore, granulation reduced the fertilizing effect of FA. The pseudo-total recovery of Ca, Mg, and S reduced after granulation, indicating that these types of FA form some very stable silicate compounds besides the common self-hardening products. Ammonium sulfate addition increased the recoveries of the easily bioavailable nutrients and total bioavailability recoveries of the Ca, K, and Mg back to the same levels as those in FA. The total bioavailability of the harmful elements As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn was very low, and this does not limit the usability of FA as a fertilizer

    Comparison of standard methods for evaluating the metal concentrations in bio ash

    Abstract The current growth strategy and environmental legislation of the European Union both aim to increase the amount of renewable energy and to improve the use of waste streams. These policies mean there will be an increasing need to utilise bio ash. Currently, Finland and Denmark are the only European countries with specific national legislation concerning bio ash use. Sweden has recommendations concerning the use of bio ash fertilisers. Besides having different limit values for harmful elements and nutrients in ash fertilisers, all these countries have different digestion methods that are allowed for element content determinations. This study compared the results of the five digestion methods (aqua regia, nitric acid, nitric/hydrochloric acids, nitric/hydrochloric/hydrogen fluoride acids, and lithium tetraborate fusion) established by Nordic authorities. Two Finnish peat-wood fly ash samples were studied. Our results indicate that the choice of digestion methods produces a significant difference in the obtained heavy metal or nutrient concentration of bio ash, especially regarding the potassium concentration
