Mito, Modo y Género en algunos clásicos de la literatura española

    Get PDF
Frye’s Anatomy was instrumental in making us more aware of the myths and archetypes of literature, but it also inspired much reconsideration of issues of mode and genre. I look at myth –the myth of desire– only in the Libro de buen amor, then at the interplay of mode and genre in the Lazarillo, the Quixote, the Celestina and the comedia nueva. Each is complex in that it illustrates generic blending. Frye’s radical of presentation and axis mundi are also discussed and applied

Is There a Solution to the Problem of Lawyer Stress - The Law School Perspective

    Get PDF
What is the result of all this stress? As previously noted in the Beck, Sales, and Benjamin study, more and more attorneys are turning to alcohol as a stress reliever. Also, a higher percentage of lawyers are dissatisfied with their personal relationships than the normal population. A poll conducted for the New York Law Journal by a Manhattan polling firm found that of the lawyers polled who had been divorced, fifty-six percent asserted that their careers in the law had contributed to the breakup of their marriages. Of great concern is the fact that an increasing number of attorneys are contemplating leaving the profession to escape the stress and overall dissatisfaction that they are experiencing

Prevalence of ticks on dogs in Jos, Plateau state, Nigeria

    Get PDF
Ticks and tick-borne diseases have in addition to other socio-economic parameters, constituted major setbacks to the development of an economically viable livestock industry in Nigeria and other parts of the world. The prevalence of ticks on dogs brought to ECWA Veterinary clinic and Jos Veterinary clinic all in Jos Plateau State was studied. A total of 1,146 ticks were collected from 300 dogs randomly selected. Three species of ticks all from the family ixodidae were encountered and identified in order of abundance namely; Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Boophilus decoloratus and Haemaphysalis leachii. Of the 154 male dogs examined 70(45.16%) were infested with ticks. Of the remaining 146 female counterpart 85(54.84%) were infested. The investigation further revealed that adolescent dogs were more susceptible to tick infestation 73(47.10%) than the adult hosts 48(30.90%) when compared to the young dogs or puppies who were the least infested 34(22.00%). Statistical analysis using Chi-Square, showed a significant difference in the infestation rate between sexes of dogs and among tick species (p<0.05) however, such difference was not observed in the ages of dogs and tick species (p>0.05). Based on these findings, any strategy intended at mitigating the problems of tick infestation of dogs in Jos Plateau and the country at large should take into account the identified tick species. Keywords: Prevalence, ticks, dogs, Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria

Increased sensitivity of the ryanodine receptor to halothane-induced oligomerization in malignant hyperthermia-susceptible human skeletal muscle

    Get PDF
Mutations in the skeletal muscle RyR1 isoform of the ryanodine receptor (RyR) Ca2+-release channel confer susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia, which may be triggered by inhalational anesthetics such as halothane. Using immunoblotting, we show here that the ryanodine receptor, calmodulin, junctin, calsequestrin, sarcalumenin, calreticulin, annexin-VI, sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase, and the dihydropyridine receptor exhibit no major changes in their expression level between normal human skeletal muscle and biopsies from individuals susceptible to malignant hyperthermia. In contrast, protein gel-shift studies with halothane-treated sarcoplasmic reticulum vesicles from normal and susceptible specimens showed a clear difference. Although the alpha2-dihydropyridine receptor and calsequestrin were not affected, clustering of the Ca2+-ATPase was induced at comparable halothane concentrations. In the concentration range of 0.014-0.35 mM halothane, anesthetic-induced oligomerization of the RyR1 complex was observed at a lower threshold concentration in the sarcoplasmic reticulum from patients with malignant hyperthermia. Thus the previously described decreased Ca2+-loading ability of the sarcoplasmic reticulum from susceptible muscle fibers is probably not due to a modified expression of Ca2+-handling elements, but more likely a feature of altered quaternary receptor structure or modified functional dynamics within the Ca2+-regulatory apparatus. Possibly increased RyR1 complex formation, in conjunction with decreased Ca2+ uptake, is of central importance to the development of a metabolic crisis in malignant hyperthermia

Polarization of Lyman-β radiation from atomic hydrogen excited by electron impact from near-threshold energy to 1000 eV

    Get PDF
The polarization of Lyman-β radiation, produced by electron-impact excitation of atomic hydrogen, has been measured over the extended energy range from near threshold to 1000 eV. Measurements were obtained in a crossed-beams experiment using a silica-reflection linear polarization analyzer in tandem with a vacuum ultraviolet monochromator to isolate the emitted line radiation. Our data are in excellent agreement with convergent close-coupling calculations over the entire energy range. The data are broadly similar to the earlier measurements of H Lyman-α polarization reported from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Embryonic brain expression analysis of lysophospholipid receptor genes suggests roles for s1p1 in neurogenesis and s1p1–3 in angiogenesis

    Get PDF
AbstractIn a comparison of embryonic brain expression patterns of lysophosphatidic acid and sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor genes (lpa1–3 and s1p1–5, respectively), transcripts detected by Northern blot were subsequently localized using in situ hybridization. We found striking s1p1 expression adjacent to several ventricles. Near the lateral ventricle, s1p1 expression was temporally and spatially coincident with neurogenesis and overlapped with lpa1 in the neocortical area. We also observed a widespread diffuse pattern for lpa2–3 and a scattered punctate pattern for s1p1–3. The punctate pattern colocalized with vascular endothelial markers. Together, these results suggest that s1p1 influences neurogenesis and s1p1–3 influence angiogenesis in the developing brain

An Institutional Framework for Heterogeneous Formal Development in UML

    Get PDF
We present a framework for formal software development with UML. In contrast to previous approaches that equip UML with a formal semantics, we follow an institution based heterogeneous approach. This can express suitable formal semantics of the different UML diagram types directly, without the need to map everything to one specific formalism (let it be first-order logic or graph grammars). We show how different aspects of the formal development process can be coherently formalised, ranging from requirements over design and Hoare-style conditions on code to the implementation itself. The framework can be used to verify consistency of different UML diagrams both horizontally (e.g., consistency among various requirements) as well as vertically (e.g., correctness of design or implementation w.r.t. the requirements)

    Isomerisation of an intramolecular hydrogen-bonded photoswitch:Protonated azobis(2-imidazole)

    Get PDF
Photoisomerisation of protonated azobis(2-imidazole), an intramolecular hydrogen-bonded azoheteroarene photoswitch molecule, is investigated in the gas phase using tandem ion mobility mass spectrometry. The E and Z isomers exhibit distinct spectral responses, with E-Z photoisomerisation occurring over the 360-520 nm range (peak at 460 nm), and Z-E photoisomerisation taking place over the 320-420 nm range (peak at 390 nm). A minor photodissociation channel involving loss of N2 is observed for the E-isomer with a maximum efficiency at 390 nm, blue-shifted by ≈70 nm relative to the wavelength for maximum photoisomerisation response. Loss of N2 is also the predominant collision-induced dissociation channel. Electronic structure calculations suggest that E-isomer photoisomerisation involves S1(ππ∗) excitation, whereas the Z-isomer photoisomerisation involves S2(ππ∗) excitation. Conversion between the E and Z isomers through collisional excitation, which is calculated to occur through both inversion and torsion pathways, is investigated experimentally by colliding the molecular ions with nitrogen buffer gas over a range of electric fields. This study demonstrates the versatility of tandem ion mobility mass spectrometry for exploring the isomerisation of molecular photoswitches initiated by either light or collisions

Spousal rape : an integration approach to pastoral counselling

    Get PDF
Although the number of rapes in South Africa is increasing, there are limited resources to which women can turn in their time of need. This is especially true with regard to spousal rape. The lack of supportive interventions exacerbates the posttraumatic stress women experience due to rape. In order to address this concern, this research seeks to identify and evaluate, by means of questionnaires, various therapy methods which are utilised by pastoral counsellors as well as secular service providers within South Africa. Both Christian women and women who are not affiliated with the Christian religion who have in some way sought assistance from the church and who have experienced spousal rape related posttraumatic stress are interviewed and the results are utilized to propose an alternative approach to pastoral counselling with persons who suffer from rape-related posttraumatic stress. Gender sensitivity is crucial to this approach. This thesis consists of seven chapters. In Chapter 1, Spousal Rape – a challenge for pastoral counselling, explains the motivation for the thesis and gives the research framework. Chapter 2 explores the phenomenon of rape, considering stranger, acquaintance, and spousal rapes. Chapter 3 develops the phenomenon of traumatic stress, particularly as it relates to spousal rape, and Chapter 4 covers the questionnaires returned, and interviews of spousal rape victims. The relevance of spirituality is covered in Chapter 5, and in Chapter 6, a counselling model is proposed with regard to the counselling of spousal rape victims. Chapter 7 deals with the transformation and emotional healing of these victims. There are ten appendixes connected, some containing information, consent and interview questionnaires used with the participants and the remainder contain information such as the Sexual Offences Bill, and DSM-IV diagnostic criteria as they relate to this thesis.Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2012.Practical Theologyunrestricte
