    AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Gregory A Tomlinson, for the Masters of Performance degree in Music, presented on April 4, 2014, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: THE MUSIC OF BACH, MOZART, POULENC AND FRANCAIX IN RECITAL MAJOR PROFESSOR: Professor Edward Benyas The following program notes are written on the occasion of my Master’s of Music recital. The recital split in two halves separated by an intermission. The first half opens with J. S. Bach’s “Seufzer, Tränen, Kummer, Not”, from Cantata No. 21, BWV 21. The second piece is Mozart’s Concerto in C major for Oboe and Orchestra, KV 314 (285d). This first half is designated as standards of Oboe repertoire before 1800. Following the intermission is two pieces from my favorite period—early twentieth century French. The first piece is L’Horloge de Flore: pour hautbois solo et orchestra. This seven movement piece by Jean Francaix provided the ultimate challenge for both performance as well as research; for it’s quickly changing moods as well as the limited sources existing in the United States. The final piece of the program is the standard Trio for Piano, Oboe and Bassoon by Francis Poulenc. Representing the double reed instruments as a family, the blending of voices is a fitting close for the program, and represents the culmination of the oboe as an instrument fitting for chamber music

    The dynamics of pragmatic enrichment during metaphor processing : activation vs. suppression

    In this paper, we test between suppression and activation accounts of metaphor processing by means of a novel metaphor interference paradigm that makes use of mouse-tracking. The goal is to understand how context influences the activation of salient and non-salient features of a concept during the on-line processing of a metaphor. In two mouse-tracking experiments, we examine the activation and availability of conceptual features that were either irrelevant or relevant for understanding a metaphor across various contexts. Our findings support the conclusion that context works primarily by rapidly suppressing salient features of a concept that are not relevant for the particular metaphorical interpretation. What is more, it seems that even further contextual manipulation does not facilitate the activation of non-salient metaphor relevant features.peer-reviewe

    Understanding leadership characteristics, frameworks, components, and contexts that are beneficial to the guidance of organizational policy is useful for understanding the way in which leaders should act during a crisis. Recessions are common throughout economies; yet, many see recessions as crises. Due to the chaotic nature of economic recessions, leaders must work in conditions of uncertainty, complexity, and volatility. Therefore, using a qualitative phenomenological approach, an examination was conducted on leaders’ lived experiences of the Great Recession of 2008 to further understand the concept of crisis leadership. A discussion is included on the way in which leaders internalize and analyze the crisis and the characteristics and behaviors needed to sustain through the crisis.     Current and Future Remote Sensing of Harmful Algal Blooms in the Chesapeake Bay to Support the Shellfish Industry

    Harmful algal bloom (HAB) species in the Chesapeake Bay can negatively impact fish, shellfish, and human health via the production of toxins and the degradation of water quality. Due to the deleterious effects of HAB species on economically and environmentally important resources, such as oyster reef systems, Bay area resource managers are seeking ways to monitor HABs and water quality at large spatial and fine temporal scales. The use of satellite ocean color imagery has proven to be a beneficial tool for resource management in other locations around the world where high-biomass, nearly monospecific HABs occur. However, remotely monitoring HABs in the Chesapeake Bay is complicated by the presence of multiple, often co-occurring, species and optically complex waters. Here we present a summary of common marine and estuarine HAB species found in the Chesapeake Bay, Alexandrium monilatum, Karlodinium veneficum, Margalefidinium polykrikoides, and Prorocentrum minimum, that have been detected from space using multispectral data products from the Ocean and Land Colour Imager (OLCI) sensor on the Sentinel-3 satellites and identified based on in situ phytoplankton data and ecological associations. We review how future hyperspectral instruments will improve discrimination of potentially harmful species from other phytoplankton communities and present a framework in which satellite data products could aid Chesapeake Bay resource managers with monitoring water quality and protecting shellfish resources

    Can We Calculate Mean Arterial Pressure in Humans?

    Mean arterial pressure (MAP) is either measured with an oscillometric cuff and then systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressures are estimated from an unknown algorithm; or SBP and DBP are measured via auscultation and MAP calculated using measures of systolic pressure (SBP), diastolic pressure (DBP), and a form-factor (FF; equation: [(SBP-DBP)*FF]+DBP). The typical FF used is 0.33 though others (0.4) have been proposed. Recent work indicates that estimation of aortic MAP via a FF leads to inaccurate values and should therefore be interpreted with caution, whether this is the case for local MAP is unknown. While the implications for hypertension (HTN) diagnosis are minimal, the calculation of local MAP is essential to the study of blood pressure regulation and exercise hemodynamics in patient populations (e.g. heart failure). PURPOSE: To compare the calculation of local MAP using catheter waveforms and a FF, against MAP derived from the pressure-time integral (PTI; i.e. average pressure across the cardiac cycle) measured via radial arterial catheterization. METHODS: We analyzed radial arterial catheter waveforms from 39 patients (Age: 71±7 years; BMI: 38.4±6.7; Female: 66%; HTN prevalence: 97%) with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) at rest and during cycling exercise at 20 Watts. We compared the PTI (from the catheter waveform) with the calculation of MAP from the peak and nadir of the same waveforms (5-beat averages) using the 0.33 and 0.4 FF’s in the FF equation. RESULTS: Compared to the PTI (91±13 mmHg), resting MAP was not significantly different when calculated using the 0.33 FF (91±11 mmHg, P\u3e0.999) but was higher when using the 0.4 FF (96±12 mmHg, PCONCLUSION:While the 0.33 FF provides an accurate assessment of MAP on average during rest and exercise in the radial artery in patients with HFpEF, the limits of agreement are large reflecting a lack of precision in measurement at an individual level. Indirect calculations of MAP via a FF may lead to inaccurate conclusions regarding the mechanisms of blood pressure regulation both at rest and during exercise testing in this population

    Mesenteric rheumatoid nodules masquerading as an intra-abdominal malignancy: a case report and review of the literature

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Rheumatoid nodules are the most common extra-articular findings in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. They occur most commonly at pressure points such as the extensor surfaces of the forearms, fingers, and occiput, but have also been reported to occur in unusual locations including the central nervous system, pericardium, pleura, and sclera. We present the unusual case of rheumatoid nodules in the small bowel mesentery masquerading as an intra-abdominal malignancy.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 65-year-old-male with a known history of longstanding erosive, nodular, seropositive rheumatoid arthritis was incidentally found to have a mesenteric mass on computed tomography (CT) exam of the abdomen. This mass had not been present on prior imaging studies and was worrisome for a malignancy. Attempts at noninvasive biopsy were nondiagnostic but consistent with a "spindle" cell neoplasm. Laparotomy revealed extensive thickening and fibrosis of the small bowel mesentery along with large, firm nodules throughout the mesentery. A limited bowel resection including a large, partially obstructing, nodule was performed. Pathology was consistent with an unusual presentation of rheumatoid nodules in the mesentery of the small bowel.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Rheumatoid nodules should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a patient who presents with an intra-abdominal mass and a history of rheumatoid arthritis. Currently, no tests or imaging modality can discriminate with sufficient accuracy to rule out a malignancy in this difficult diagnostic delimma. Hopefully, this case will serve as impetus for further study and biomarker discovery to allow for improved diagnostic power.</p
