    Solid propellant motor

    A case bonded end burning solid propellant rocket motor is described. A propellant with sufficiently low modulus to avoid chamber buckling on cooling from cure and sufficiently high elongation to sustain the stresses induced without cracking is used. The propellant is zone cured within the motor case at high pressures equal to or approaching the pressure at which the motor will operate during combustion. A solid propellant motor with a burning time long enough that its spacecraft would be limited to a maximum acceleration of less than 1 g is provided by one version of the case bonded end burning solid propellant motor of the invention

    On uniform relationships between combinatorial problems

    The enterprise of comparing mathematical theorems according to their logical strength is an active area in mathematical logic, with one of the most common frameworks for doing so being reverse mathematics. In this setting, one investigates which theorems provably imply which others in a weak formal theory roughly corresponding to computable mathematics. Since the proofs of such implications take place in classical logic, they may in principle involve appeals to multiple applications of a particular theorem, or to nonuniform decisions about how to proceed in a given construction. In practice, however, if a theorem Q implies a theorem P, it is usually because there is a direct uniform translation of the problems represented by P into the problems represented by Q, in a precise sense formalized by Weihrauch reducibility. We study this notion of uniform reducibility in the context of several natural combinatorial problems, and compare and contrast it with the traditional notion of implication in reverse mathematics. We show, for instance, that for all n; j; k 1, if j < k then Ramsey's theorem for n-tuples and k many colors is not uniformly, or Weihrauch, reducible to Ramsey's theorem for n-tuples and j many colors. The two theorems are classically equivalent, so our analysis gives a genuinely ner metric by which to gauge the relative strength of mathematical propositions. We also study Weak K�onig's Lemma, the Thin Set Theorem, and the Rainbow Ramsey's Theorem, along with a number of their variants investigated in the literature. Weihrauch reducibility turns out to be connected with sequential forms of mathematical principles, where one wishes to solve in nitely many instances of a particular problem simultaneously. We exploit this connection to uncover new points of di erence between combinatorial problems previously thought to be more closely related

    Lithic Morphological Organization: Gahagan Bifaces from Texas and Louisiana

    This study is focused upon an analysis of Gahagan biface morphology and enlists the three largest samples of these bifaces, to include that of the type site (Gahagan Mound) as well as the Mounds Plantation and George C. Davis sites. Results indicate a significant difference in Gahagan biface morphology at the Mounds Plantation site when compared with Gahagan bifaces from the Gahagan Mound and George C. Davis sites. A test of morphological integration indicates that the bifaces are significantly integrated, meaning that those traits used to characterize their shape (blade and base) vary in a coordinated manner. Tests for allometry and asymmetry were not significant. Results confirm that Gahagan biface production at Mounds Plantation differs significantly when compared with industries at Gahagan Mound and George C. Davis. Results augment previous inquiries, and provide additional evidence for a north-south divide based upon the morphology associated with communities of practice for Gahagan bifaces. When viewed in concert with similar shifts in Hickory Fine Engraved and Smithport Plain bottle morphology, multiple lines of evidence lend support to an increasingly robust argument for two previously unrecognized and morphologically-unique Caddo communities of practice

    BACKGROUND: Kinetics of inhaled agents are often described by physiological models. However, many pharmacokinetic concepts, such as context-sensitive half-times, have been developed for drugs described by classical compartmental models. We derived classical compartmental models that describe the course of the alveolar concentrations (F(A)) generated by the physiological uptake and distribution models used by the Gas Man(® )program, and describe how distribution volumes and clearances relate to tissue volumes and blood flows. METHODS: Gas Man(® )was used to generate F(A )vs. time curves during the wash-in and wash-out period of 115 min each with a high fresh gas flow (8 L.min(-1)), a constant alveolar minute ventilation (4 L.min(-1)), and a constant inspired concentration (F(I)) of halothane (0.75%), isoflurane (1.15%), sevoflurane (2%), or desflurane (6%). With each of these F(I), simulations were ran for a 70 kg patient with 5 different cardiac outputs (CO) (2, 3, 5, 8 and 10 L.min(-1)) and for 5 patients with different weights (40, 55, 70, 85, and 100 kg) but the same CO (5 L.min(-1)). Two and three compartmental models were fitted to F(A )of the individual 9 runs using NONMEM. After testing for parsimony, goodness of fit was evaluated using median prediction error (MDPE) and median absolute prediction error (MDAPE). The model was tested prospectively for a virtual 62 kg patient with a cardiac output of 4.5 L.min(-1 )for three different durations (wash-in and wash-out period of 10, 60, and 180 min each) with an F(I )of 1.5% halothane, 1.5% isoflurane, sevoflurane 4%, or desflurane 12%. RESULTS: A three-compartment model fitted the data best (MDPE = 0% and MDAPE ≤ 0.074%) and performed equally well when tested prospectively (MDPE ≤ 0.51% and MDAPE ≤ 1.51%). The relationship between CO and body weight and the distribution volumes and clearances is complex. CONCLUSION: The kinetics of anesthetic gases can be adequately described e by a mammilary compartmental model. Therefore, concepts that are traditionally thought of as being applicable to the kinetics of intravenous agents can be equally well applied to anesthetic gases. Distribution volumes and clearances cannot be equated to tissue volumes and blood flows respectively

    Influence of a Dy overlayer on the precessional dynamics of a ferromagnetic thin film

Available from the American Institute of Physics via the DOI in this record.Precessional dynamics of a Co50Fe50(0.7)/Ni 90Fe10(5)/Dy(1)/Ru(3) (thicknesses in nm) thin film have been explored by low temperature time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect and phase-resolved x-ray ferromagnetic resonance measurements. As the temperature was decreased from 300 to 140 K, the magnetic damping was found to increase rapidly while the resonance field was strongly reduced. Static x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements revealed increasing ferromagnetic order of the Dy moment antiparallel to that of Co50Fe50/Ni 90Fe10. Increased coupling of the Dy orbital moment to the precessing spin magnetization leads to significantly increased damping and gyromagnetic ratio of the film while leaving its magnetic anisotropy effectively unchanged.The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support of EPSRC Grant EP/F021755/1.
