Identification of A-colored Stars and Structure in the Halo of the Milky Way from SDSS Commissioning Data
A sample of 4208 objects with magnitude 15 < g* < 22 and colors of main
sequence A stars has been selected from 370 square degrees of Sloan Digital Sky
Survey (SDSS) commissioning observations. The data is from two long, narrow
stripes, each with an opening angle of greater than 60 deg, at Galactic
latitudes 36 < abs(b) < 63 on the celestial equator. An examination of the
sample's distribution shows that these stars trace considerable substructure in
the halo. Large overdensities of A-colored stars in the North at (l,b,R) =
(350, 50, 46 kpc) and in the South at (157, -58, 33 kpc) and extending over
tens of degrees are present in the halo of the Milky Way. Using photometry to
separate the stars by surface gravity, both structures are shown to contain a
sequence of low surface gravity stars consistent with identification as a blue
horizontal branch (BHB). Both structures also contain a population of high
surface gravity stars two magnitudes fainter than the BHB stars, consistent
with their identification as blue stragglers (BSs). From the numbers of
detected BHB stars, lower limits to the implied mass of the structures are
6x10^6 M_sun and 2x10^6 M_sun. The fact that two such large clumps have been
detected in a survey of only 1% of the sky indicates that such structures are
not uncommon in the halo. Simple spheroidal parameters are fit to a complete
sample of the remaining unclumped BHB stars and yield (at r < 40 kpc) a fit to
a halo distribution with flattening (c/a = 0.65+/-0.2) and a density falloff

High-Redshift Quasars Found in Sloan Digital Sky Survey Commissioning Data IV: Luminosity Function from the Fall Equatorial Stripe Sampl
This is the fourth paper in a series aimed at finding high-redshift quasars
from five-color imaging data taken along the Celestial Equator by the SDSS.
during its commissioning phase. In this paper, we use the color-selected sample
of 39 luminous high-redshift quasars presented in Paper III to derive the
evolution of the quasar luminosity function over the range of 3.6<z<5.0, and
-27.5<M_1450<-25.5 (Omega=1, H_0=50 km s^-1 Mpc^-1). We use the selection
function derived in Paper III to correct for sample incompleteness. The
luminosity function is estimated using three different methods: (1) the 1/V_a
estimator; (2) a maximum likelihood solution, assuming that the density of
quasars depends exponentially on redshift and as a power law in luminosity and
(3) Lynden-Bell's non-parametric C^- estimator. All three methods give
consistent results. The luminous quasar density decreases by a factor of ~ 6
from z=3.5 to z=5.0, consistent with the decline seen from several previous
optical surveys at z<4.5. The luminosity function follows psi(L) ~ L^{-2.5} for
z~4 at the bright end, significantly flatter than the bright end luminosity
function psi(L) \propto L^{-3.5} found in previous studies for z<3, suggesting
that the shape of the quasar luminosity function evolves with redshift as well,
and that the quasar evolution from z=2 to 5 cannot be described as pure
luminosity evolution. Possible selection biases and the effect of dust

Авторы статьи определяют условия налогообложения операций с нерезидентами, учитывая существующие особенности правоприменительной деятельности, вносят отдельные предложения относительно усовершенствования процедуры администрирования налогов, которые удерживаются из нерезидентов.Іn this article practice of application of concepts «resident» and «nonresident» are explored both in Ukraine and some foreign countries, and granted the author’s view on the definition of these terms. Two Stellar Components in the Halo of the Milky Way
The halo of the Milky Way provides unique elemental abundance and kinematic
information on the first objects to form in the Universe, which can be used to
tightly constrain models of galaxy formation and evolution. Although the halo
was once considered a single component, evidence for its dichotomy has slowly
emerged in recent years from inspection of small samples of halo objects. Here
we show that the halo is indeed clearly divisible into two broadly overlapping
structural components -- an inner and an outer halo -- that exhibit different
spatial density profiles, stellar orbits and stellar metallicities (abundances
of elements heavier than helium). The inner halo has a modest net prograde
rotation, whereas the outer halo exhibits a net retrograde rotation and a peak
metallicity one-third that of the inner halo. These properties indicate that
the individual halo components probably formed in fundamentally different ways,
through successive dissipational (inner) and dissipationless (outer) mergers
and tidal disruption of proto-Galactic clumps.Comment: Two stand-alone files in manuscript, concatenated together. The first

Chemical Analysis of Cellular and Extracellular Carbohydrates of a Biofilm-Forming Strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA14
Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative bacterium and an opportunistic pathogen, which causes persisting life-threatening infections in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. Biofilm mode of growth facilitates its survival in a variety of environments. Most P. aeruginosa isolates, including the non-mucoid laboratory strain PA14, are able to form a thick pellicle, which results in a surface-associated biofilm at the air-liquid (A\ufffdL) interface in standing liquid cultures. Exopolysaccharides (EPS) are considered as key components in the formation of this biofilm pellicle. In the non-mucoid P. aeruginosa strain PA14, the \ufffd\ufffdscaffolding\ufffd\ufffd polysaccharides of the biofilm matrix, and the molecules responsible for the structural integrity of rigid A\ufffdL biofilm have not been identified. Moreover, the role of LPS in this process is unclear, and the chemical structure of the LPS O-antigen of PA14 has not yet been elucidated. Principal Findings: In the present work we carried out a systematic analysis of cellular and extracellular (EC) carbohydrates of P. aeruginosa PA14. We also elucidated the chemical structure of the LPS O-antigen by chemical methods and 2-D NMR spectroscopy. Our results showed that it is composed of linear trisaccharide repeating units, identical to those described for P. aeruginosa Lanyi type O:2a,c (Lanyi-Bergman O-serogroup 10a, 10c; IATS serotype 19) and having the following structure: -4)-a-L-GalNAcA-(1\ufffd3)-a-D-QuiNAc-(1\ufffd3)- a-L-Rha-(1-. Furthermore, an EC O-antigen polysaccharide (EC O-PS) and the glycerol-phosphorylated cyclic b-(1,3)-glucans were identified in the culture supernatant of PA14, grown statically in minimal medium. Finally, the extracellular matrix of the thick biofilm formed at the A-L interface contained, in addition to eDNA, important quantities (at least ,20% of dry weight) of LPS-like material. Conclusions: We characterized the chemical structure of the LPS O-antigen and showed that the O-antigen polysaccharide is an abundant extracellular carbohydrate of PA14. Colors of 2625 Quasars at 0<z<5 Measured in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Photometric System
We present an empirical investigation of the colors of quasars in the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) photometric system. The sample studied includes 2625
quasars with SDSS photometry. The quasars are distributed in a 2.5 degree wide
stripe centered on the Celestial Equator covering square degrees.
Positions and SDSS magnitudes are given for the 898 quasars known prior to SDSS
spectroscopic commissioning. New SDSS quasars represent an increase of over
200% in the number of known quasars in this area of the sky. The ensemble
average of the observed colors of quasars in the SDSS passbands are well
represented by a power-law continuum with (). However, the contributions of the bump
and other strong emission lines have a significant effect upon the colors. The
color-redshift relation exhibits considerable structure, which may be of use in
determining photometric redshifts for quasars. The range of colors can be
accounted for by a range in the optical spectral index with a distribution
(95% confidence), but there is a red tail in the
distribution. This tail may be a sign of internal reddening. Finally, we show
that there is a continuum of properties between quasars and Seyfert galaxies
and we test the validity of the traditional division between the two classes of

Modeling the competition between lung metastases and the immune system using agents
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The Triplex cell vaccine is a cancer cellular vaccine that can prevent almost completely the mammary tumor onset in HER-2/neu transgenic mice. In a translational perspective, the activity of the Triplex vaccine was also investigated against lung metastases showing that the vaccine is an effective treatment also for the cure of metastases. A future human application of the Triplex vaccine should take into account several aspects of biological behavior of the involved entities to improve the efficacy of therapeutic treatment and to try to predict, for example, the outcomes of longer experiments in order to move faster towards clinical phase I trials. To help to address this problem, MetastaSim, a hybrid Agent Based - ODE model for the simulation of the vaccine-elicited immune system response against lung metastases in mice is presented. The model is used as in silico wet-lab. As a first application MetastaSim is used to find protocols capable of maximizing the total number of prevented metastases, minimizing the number of vaccine administrations.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The model shows that it is possible to obtain "in silico" a 45% reduction in the number of vaccinations. The analysis of the results further suggests that any optimal protocol for preventing lung metastases formation should be composed by an initial massive vaccine dosage followed by few vaccine recalls.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Such a reduction may represent an important result from the point of view of translational medicine to humans, since a downsizing of the number of vaccinations is usually advisable in order to minimize undesirable effects. The suggested vaccination strategy also represents a notable outcome. Even if this strategy is commonly used for many infectious diseases such as tetanus and hepatitis-B, it can be in fact considered as a relevant result in the field of cancer-vaccines immunotherapy. These results can be then used and verified in future "in vivo" experiments, and their outcome can be used to further improve and refine the model.</p
The Fifth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
This paper describes the Fifth Data Release (DR5) of the Sloan Digital Sky
Survey (SDSS). DR5 includes all survey quality data taken through June 2005 and
represents the completion of the SDSS-I project (whose successor, SDSS-II will
continue through mid-2008). It includes five-band photometric data for 217
million objects selected over 8000 square degrees, and 1,048,960 spectra of
galaxies, quasars, and stars selected from 5713 square degrees of that imaging
data. These numbers represent a roughly 20% increment over those of the Fourth
Data Release; all the data from previous data releases are included in the
present release. In addition to "standard" SDSS observations, DR5 includes
repeat scans of the southern equatorial stripe, imaging scans across M31 and
the core of the Perseus cluster of galaxies, and the first spectroscopic data
from SEGUE, a survey to explore the kinematics and chemical evolution of the
Galaxy. The catalog database incorporates several new features, including
photometric redshifts of galaxies, tables of matched objects in overlap regions
of the imaging survey, and tools that allow precise computations of survey

Detection of massive tidal tails around the globular cluster Pal 5 with SDSS commissioning data
We report the discovery of two well-defined tidal tails emerging from the
sparse remote globular cluster Palomar 5. These tails stretch out symmetrically
to both sides of the cluster in the direction of constant Galactic latitude and
subtend an angle of 2.6 degrees on the sky. The tails have been detected in
commissioning data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), providing deep
five-color photometry in a 2.5 degrees wide band along the equator. The stars
in the tails make up a substantial part (~1/3) of the current total population
of cluster stars in the magnitude interval 19.5 < i* < 22.0. This reveals that
the cluster is subject to heavy mass loss. The orientation of the tails
provides an important key for the determination of the cluster's Galactic
