    Translations, un poema audiovisual

[EN] Translation, in English, is a term that defines, on the one hand, the act of translating from one language to another, and on the other, the act of moving from one place to another. Weaving a game with the double meaning of this expression, the synthesis of this audiovisual essay is based within an introspective dynamic, in defining the link between two cultures, and two places; Galicia and Korea, through an intimate look in which the subaltern subject is compensated. Starting from the East-West construct, as Edward Said explains, the East is seen as an amalgam in which the mystical and the exotic are observed with desire, always from a superior position. The term is in itself a way of reaffirming himself; the, white, European, Christian and endocentric man, in front of the rest. Taking these concepts as a way of understanding the subjective identity of a migrant woman, the structure of this experimentation is based on a series of interventions in the landscape, in different territories. In this way, a portable and removable structure is placed in a forest, a stream or a lake. These spaces hide places where people once settled, but today they remain forgotten. The color white and its meanings in the folklore of both cultures; purity, life, fragility or death, will ultimately serve as a backbone that gives meaning to the sequence of images and sounds, which are interrelated through this comparative analysis.[ES] Translation, en inglés, es un término que define, por una parte, el acto de traducir de un idioma a otro, y por otra, el de trasladar de un lugar a otro. [EN] The following article contains the conceptual and design process of the work For Eternity (2021), exhibited in the call Art Públic/Universitat Pública. This project connects the problem of the degradation time of plastics in the environment, linking it with the transcendent conception of eternity. Therefore, we carry out an experiential exploration of the concept, focused on raising awareness of how it is necessary to take sustainability into account in socio-scientific advances, configuring underlying disciplines that complement each other in trans disciplinary knowledge. Equilibria in the secular, non-coplanar two-planet problem

We investigate the secular dynamics of a planetary system composed of the parent star and two massive planets in mutually inclined orbits. The dynamics are investigated in wide ranges of semi-major axes ratios (0.1-0.667), and planetary masses ratios (0.25-2) as well as in the whole permitted ranges of the energy and total angular momentum. The secular model is constructed by semi-analytic averaging of the three-body system. We focus on equilibria of the secular Hamiltonian (periodic solutions of the full system), and we analyze their stability. We attempt to classify families of these solutions in terms of the angular momentum integral. We identified new equilibria, yet unknown in the literature. Our results are general and may be applied to a wide class of three-body systems, including configurations with a star and brown dwarfs and sub-stellar objects. We also describe some technical aspects of the semi-numerical averaging. The HD 12661 planetary system is investigated as an example configuration.Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures, accepted to Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Societ

Study of Foaming Properties and Effect of the Isomeric Distribution of Some Anionic Surfactants

Using different reaction conditions of photosulfochlorination of n-dodecane, two samples of anionic surfactants of sulfonate type are obtained. Their micellar behavior has been already reported and the relationship between their isomeric distribution and their chemical structures and micellar behaviors have been more thoroughly explored. In this investigation, we screened the foaming properties (foaming power and foam stability) by a standardized method very similar to the Ross–Miles foaming tests to identify which surfactants are suitable for applications requiring high foaming, or, alternatively, low foaming. The results obtained for the synthesized surfactants are compared to those obtained for an industrial sample of secondary alkanesulfonate (Hostapur 60) and to those of a commercial sample of sodium dodecylsulfate used as reference for anionic surfactants. The foam formation and foam stability of aqueous solutions of the two samples of dodecanesulfonate are compared as a function of their isomeric distribution. These compounds show good foaming power characterized in most cases by metastable or dry foams. The highest foaming power is obtained for the sample rich in primary isomers which also produces foam with a relatively high stability. For the sample rich in secondary isomers we observe under fixed conditions a comparable initial foam height but the foam stability turns out to be low. This property is interesting for applications requiring low foaming properties such as dishwashing liquid for machines. The best results are observed near and above the critical micellar concentrations and at 25 C for both the samples

Secular Evolution of HD 12661: A System Caught at an Unlikely Time

The eccentricity evolution of multiple planet systems can provide valuable constraints on planet formation models. Unfortunately, the inevitable uncertainties in the current orbital elements can lead to significant ambiguities in the nature of the secular evolution. Integrating any single set of orbital elements inadequately describes the full range of secular evolutions consistent with current observations. Thus, we combine radial velocity observations of HD 12661 with Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling to generate ensembles of initial conditions for direct n-body integrations. We find that any mean motion resonances are quite weak and do not significantly impact the secular evolution, and that current observations indicate circulation or large amplitude libration of the periapses. The eccentricity of the outer planet undergoes large oscillations for nearly all of the allowed two-planet orbital solutions. This type of secular evolution would arise if planet c had been impulsively perturbed, perhaps due to strong scattering of an additional planet that was subsequently accreted onto the star. Finally, we note that the secular evolution implied by the current orbital configuration implies that planet c spends ~96% of the time following an orbit more eccentric than that presently observed. Either this system is being observed during a relatively rare state, or additional planets are affecting the observed radial velocities and/or the system's secular eccentricity evolution.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

    Pt/CexPr1−xO2 (x = 1 or 0.9) NOx storage–reduction (NSR) catalysts

Model Pt/Ce0.9Pr0.1O2 and Pt/CeO2 NOx storage–reduction catalysts were prepared via nitrate calcination, co-precipitation and carbon-templating routes. Raman spectroscopic data obtained on the catalysts indicated that the introduction of praseodymium into the ceria lattice increased the concentration of defect sites (vacancies), arising from the higher reducibility of the Pr4+ cation compared to Ce4+. For the Pr-promoted samples, H2-TPR profiles contained high temperature bulk reduction peaks which were less pronounced compared with their ceria analogs, indicating that the presence of praseodymium enhances oxygen mobility due to the creation of lattice defects. Under lean-rich cycling conditions, the cycle-averaged NOx conversion of the Pt/Ce0.9Pr0.1O2 samples was in each case substantially higher than that of the Pt/CeO2 analog, amounting to a difference of 10–15% in the absolute NOx conversion in some cases. According to DRIFTS data, a double role can be assigned to Pr doping; on the one hand, Pr accelerates the oxidation of adsorbed NOx species during the lean periods. On the other hand, Pr doping destabilizes the adsorbed NOx species during the rich periods, and the kinetics of nitrate decomposition are faster on Pt/Ce0.9Pr0.1O2, leading to improved catalyst regeneration. These results suggest that ceria-based mixed oxides incorporating Pr are promising materials for NOx storage–reduction catalysts intended for low temperature operation. The financial support of Generalitat Valenciana (predoctoral stay BEFPI/2012), the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (Project CTQ2012-30703), and co-financing by FEDER resources is acknowledged. Supernatants from lymphocytes stimulated with Bacillus Calmette-Guerin can modify the antigenicity of tumours and stimulate allogeneic T-cell responses

BACKGROUND: Reduced expression of class 1 human leucocyte antigens (HLA1) is often a mechanism by which tumours evade surveillance by the host immune system. This is often associated with an immune function that is unable to mount appropriate responses against disease, which can result in a state that favours carcinogenesis. METHODS: In the current study, we have explored the effects of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) on the cytokine output of leucocytes, which is a key determinant in generating antitumour action, and have also assessed the effect of these cytokine cocktails on HLA1 expression in solid tumour cell lines. RESULTS: BCG potently activated a broad range of leucocytes, and also enhanced the production of cytokines that were Th(1)-predominant. Supernatants from BCG-treated leucocytes significantly increased the expression of HLA1 on the surface of cancer cell lines, which correlated with increased cytolytic T-cell activity. We also showed that the increased HLA1 expression was associated with activation of intracellular signalling pathways, which was triggered by the increases in the Th(1)-cytokines interferon-γ and tumour necrosis factor-α, as counteracting their effects negated the enhancement. CONCLUSION: These studies reaffirm the role of BCG as a putative immunotherapy through their cytokine-modifying effects on leucocytes and their capacity to enhance tumour visibility

Successful Treatment of Cutaneous Lesions of Dermatomyositis with Topical Pimecrolimus

Dermatomyositis (DM) is an idiopathic inflammatory process characterized by proximal muscle weakness and cutaneous lesions, such as the Gottron's sign, heliotrope rash, and erythematous photosensitive rash. Administration of systemic agents for the treatment of underlying systemic diseases leads to remission of the cutaneous lesions in many cases. However, cutaneous lesions may remain refractory to treatment. Pimecrolimus is a calcineurin inhibitor with combined anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activity. It has high affinity to the skin and low permeation potential, even in patients with acute skin inflammation and in those undergoing post-topical corticosteroid therapy. We herein report two DM patients whose cutaneous lesions were refractory to conventional treatment but showed dramatic response to topical pimecrolimus. The clinical outcomes suggest that topical pimecrolimus may be a good therapeutic alternative for the management of the cutaneous lesions of DM
