    Quality of integrated chronic care measured by patient survey: identification, selection and application of most appropriate instruments\ud

    Objective  To identify the most appropriate generic instrument to measure experience and/or satisfaction of people receiving integrated chronic care.\ud \ud Background  Health care is becoming more user-centred and, as a result, the experience of users of care and evaluation of their experience and/or satisfaction is taken more seriously. It is unclear to what extent existing instruments are appropriate in measuring the experience and/or satisfaction of people using integrated chronic care.\ud \ud Methods  Instruments were identified by means of a systematic literature review. Appropriateness of instruments was analysed on seven criteria. The two most promising instruments were translated into Dutch, if necessary, and administered to a convenience sample of 109 people with a chronic illness. Data derived from respondents were analysed statistically. Focus-group interviews were conducted to assess the semantic and technical equivalence as well as opinions of people about the applicability and relevance of the translated instruments.\ud \ud Results  From 37 instruments identified, the Patients’ Assessment of Care for chronIc Conditions (PACIC) and the short form of the Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire III (PSQ-18) were selected as most promising instruments. Both instruments produced similar median scores across people with different chronic conditions. The overall PACIC and its subscales and the overall PSQ-18 were highly internally consistent, but not the PSQ-18 subscales. Overall, the PACIC demonstrated better psychometric characteristics. PACIC and PSQ-18 scores were found to be moderately correlated. Whereas more respondents preferred the PSQ-18, focus-group participants regarded the PACIC to be more applicable and relevant. The technical and semantic equivalence of both instruments were sufficient.\ud \ud Conclusions  Because of its psychometric characteristics, perceived applicability and relevance, the PACIC is the most appropriate instrument to measure the experience of people receiving integrated chronic care\u

    Fuzzy Integral Driven Ensemble Classification using A Priori Fuzzy Measures

    Aggregation operators are mathematical functions that enable the fusion of information from multiple sources. Fuzzy Integrals (FIs) are widely used aggregation operators, which combine information in respect to a Fuzzy Measure (FM) which captures the worth of both the individual sources and all their possible combinations. However, FIs suffer from the potential drawback of not fusing information according to the intuitively interpretable FM, leading to non-intuitive results. The latter is particularly relevant when a FM has been defined using external information (e.g. experts). In order to address this and provide an alternative to the FI, the Recursive Average (RAV) aggregation operator was recently proposed which enables intuitive data fusion in respect to a given FM. With an alternative fusion operator in place, in this paper, we define the concept of ‘A Priori’ FMs which are generated based on external information (e.g. classification accuracy) and thus provide an alternative to the traditional approaches of learning or manually specifying FMs. We proceed to develop one specific instance of such an a priori FM to support the decision level fusion step in ensemble classification. We evaluate the resulting approach by contrasting the performance of the ensemble classifiers for different FMs, including the recently introduced Uriz and the Sugeno lambda-measure; as well as by employing both the Choquet FI and the RAV as possible fusion operators. Results are presented for 20 datasets from machine learning repositories and contextualised to the wider literature by comparing them to state-of-the-art ensemble classifiers such as Adaboost, Bagging, Random Forest and Majority Voting

    This paper examines the strategic tool kit, from a human resource management (HRM) perspective, in terms of usage and impact. Research to date has tended to consider usage, assuming to a certain extent that knowledge and understanding of particular tools suggest that practitioners value them. The research on which this paper is based builds upon the idea that usage indicates satisfaction, but develops the usage theme to investigate which decision-makers are actually engaged in both tool appliance and the strategic process. Of particular interest to the researchers are the educational background, age and seniority of the decision-makers. In addition, potential links with HRM and organizational performance are also explored. The context of the research, the German machinery and equipment sector, provides an insight into the industry's ability to sustain growth in face of increasing international competition. The paper calls for a greater awareness, from a human resource perspective, and utilization of strategic management practice and associated decision-making aids

    Interpretability indices for hierarchical fuzzy systems

    Hierarchical fuzzy systems (HFSs) have been shown to have the potential to improve interpretability of fuzzy logic systems (FLSs). In recent years, a variety of indices have been proposed to measure the interpretability of FLSs such as the Nauck index and Fuzzy index. However, interpretability indices associated with HFSs have not so far been discussed. The structure of HFSs, with multiple layers, subsystems, and varied topologies, is the main challenge in constructing interpretability indices for HFSs. Thus, the comparison of interpretability between FLSs and HFSs-even at the index level-is still subject to open discussion. This paper begins to address these challenges by introducing extensions to the FLS Nauck and Fuzzy interpretability indices for HFSs. Using the proposed indices, we explore the concept of interpretability in relation to the different structures in FLSs and HFSs. Initial experiments on benchmark datasets show that based on the proposed indices, HFSs with equivalent function to FLSs produce higher indices, i.e. are more interpretable than their corresponding FLSs

    Comparison of Fuzzy Integral-Fuzzy Measure based Ensemble Algorithms with the State-of-the-art Ensemble Algorithms

    The Fuzzy Integral (FI) is a non-linear aggregation operator which enables the fusion of information from multiple sources in respect to a Fuzzy Measure (FM) which captures the worth of both the individual sources and all their possible combinations. Based on the expected potential of non-linear aggregation offered by the FI, its application to decision-level fusion in ensemble classifiers, i.e. to fuse multiple classifiers outputs towards one superior decision level output, has recently been explored. A key example of such a FI-FM ensemble classification method is the Decision-level Fuzzy Integral Multiple Kernel Learning (DeFIMKL) algorithm, which aggregates the outputs of kernel based classifiers through the use of the Choquet FI with respect to a FM learned through a regularised quadratic programming approach. While the approach has been validated against a number of classifiers based on multiple kernel learning, it has thus far not been compared to the state-of-the-art in ensemble classification. Thus, this paper puts forward a detailed comparison of FI-FM based ensemble methods, specifically the DeFIMKL algorithm, with state-of-the art ensemble methods including Adaboost, Bagging, Random Forest and Majority Voting over 20 public datasets from the UCI machine learning repository. The results on the selected datasets suggest that the FI based ensemble classifier performs both well and efficiently, indicating that it is a viable alternative when selecting ensemble classifiers and indicating that the non-linear fusion of decision level outputs offered by the FI provides expected potential and warrants further study

    An experimental and analogue study of iron release from red sandstones

    The Jurassic Entrada sandstone at Salt Wash Graben, Utah, USA, a red sandstone contains significant rock bleaching. The cause of the bleaching has been thought to be associated with the modern day CO2-rich fluids in the area which present on the surface by utalising the local fractures, some of which are filled with calcite and iron rich minerals (e.g. Jarosite). An experimental study was conducted to determine the cause of the bleaching. CO2 was found not to cause sandstone bleaching. However, the CO2 was found to mobilize significant amounts of iron from the fracture minerals suggesting that this is a possible source of the iron in the modern pore fluids

    Selective dip-coating of chemically micropatterned surfaces

    We characterize the selective deposition of liquid microstructures on chemically heterogeneous surfaces by means of dip coating processes. The maximum deposited film thickness depends critically on the speed of withdrawal as well as the pattern size, geometry, and angular orientation. For vertically oriented hydrophilic strips, we derive a hydrodynamic scaling relation for the deposited film thickness which agrees very well with interferometric measurements of dip-coated liquid lines. Due to the lateral confinement of the liquid, our scaling relation differs considerably from the classic Landau–Levich formula for chemically homogeneous surfaces. Dip coating is a simple method for creating large area arrays of liquid microstructures for applications involving chemical analysis and synthesis, biochemical assays, or wet printing of liquid polymer or ink patterns
