    Triborate and pentaborate salts of non-metal cations derived from N-substituted piperazines: synthesis, structural (XRD) and thermal properties

    The synthesis and characterization of a triborate salt, [H2N(CH2CH2)2NH2][B3O3(OH)4]2 (1), and four pentaborate salts, [H2N(CH2CH2)2NH][B5O6(OH)4] (2a), [MeHN(CH2CH2)2NH][B5O6(OH)4] (2b), [MeHN(CH2CH2)2NMe][B5O6(OH)4] (2c) and [Me2N(CH2CH2)2NMe2][B5O6(OH)4]2 (2d) are described. TGA and DSC analysis (in air, 25�1000 °C) indicate that triborate 1 decomposes to B2O3via a multistage process, with the first stage (<250 °C) being dehydration to condensed polymeric hexaborate of approximate composition: [H2N(CH2CH2)2NH2][B6O10]. The pentaborates (2a�2d) are thermally decomposed to B2O3via a 2 stage process involving polymeric [NMC][B5O8]. The anhydrous polyborates were amorphous. BET analysis of materials derived from the thermolysis of 1 at 250, 400, 600, and 1000 °C, were all non-porous (surface area <1.8 m2 g�1). A single-crystal X-ray diffraction study of 1 showed that it contains isolated triborate(1�) anions in a structure comprised of alternating cationic and anionic layers held together via extensive H-bonds.     The preparation of [NMC][B5O6(OH)4] {NMC = 2-MeC3N2H4 (3),1-MeC3N2H4 (4), 4-MeC3N2H4 (5), 1,2-Me2C3N2H3 (6), 1,2,3-Me3C3N2H2 (7), 1-EtC3N2H4 (8), 2-EtC3N2H4 (9), 2-Et-4-MeC3N2H3 (10) 1-Et-3-MeC3N2H3 (11) and 2-iPrC3N2H4 (12)} salts are reported. Compounds were characterised by spectroscopy (NMR and IR) and by single crystal XRD (6, 7, 9, 10, 12) studies. All structures show extensive H-bonded networks and 7 displays the first example of reciprocal paired αααα anion�anion interactions. These are facilitated by the pentaborate boroxole rings being significantly distorted (boat) from the near-planar arrangements more commonly observed. The related imidazolinium salt, [2-MeC3N2H6][B5O6(OH)4] (13), has also been characterised by XRD studies. Compound 13 is isostructural with 3.     Primordialists and Constructionists: a typology of theories of religion

    This article adopts categories from nationalism theory to classify theories of religion. Primordialist explanations are grounded in evolutionary psychology and emphasize the innate human demand for religion. Primordialists predict that religion does not decline in the modern era but will endure in perpetuity. Constructionist theories argue that religious demand is a human construct. Modernity initially energizes religion, but subsequently undermines it. Unpacking these ideal types is necessary in order to describe actual theorists of religion. Three distinctions within primordialism and constructionism are relevant. Namely those distinguishing: a) materialist from symbolist forms of constructionism; b) theories of origins from those pertaining to the reproduction of religion; and c) within reproduction, between theories of religious persistence and secularization. This typology helps to make sense of theories of religion by classifying them on the basis of their causal mechanisms, chronology and effects. In so doing, it opens up new sightlines for theory and research

    Secondary education reform in Lesotho and Zimbabwe and the needs of rural girls: Pronouncements, policy and practice

    Analysis of the educational needs of rural girls in Lesotho and Zimbabwe suggests a number of shortcomings in the current form of secondary education, and ways in which it might be modified so as to serve this sizeable group of students better. Several of the shortcomings, notably in relation to curricular irrelevance and excessive focus on examinations, have long been recognised, including by politicians. Yet political pronouncements are seldom translated into policy, and even where policy is formulated, reforms are seldom implemented in schools. This paper makes use of interviews with educational decision-makers in the two southern African countries and a range of documentary sources to explore why, despite the considerable differences between the two contexts, much needed educational reforms have been implemented in neither

    Testing the applicability of morphometric characterisation in discordant catchments to ancient landscapes: A case study from southern Africa

    The ancient landscapes south of the Great Escarpment in southern Africa preserve large-scale geomorphological features despite their antiquity. This study applies and evaluates morphometric indices (such as hypsometry, long profile analysis, stream gradient index, and linear/areal catchment characteristics) to the Gouritz catchment, a large discordant catchment in the Western Cape. Spatial variation of morphometric indices were assessed across catchment (trunk rivers) and subcatchment scales. The hypsometric curve of the catchment is sinusoidal, and a range of curve profiles are evident at subcatchment scale. Hypsometric integrals do not correlate to catchment properties such as area, circularity, relief, and dissection; and stream length gradients do not follow expected patterns, with the highest values seen in the mid-catchment areas. Rock type variation is interpreted to be the key control on morphometric indices within the Gouritz catchment, especially hypsometry and stream length gradient. External controls, such as tectonics and climate, were likely diminished because of the long duration of catchment development in this location. While morphometric indices can be a useful procedure in the evaluation of landscape evolution, this study shows that care must be taken in the application of morphometric indices to constrain tectonic or climatic variation in ancient landscapes because of inherited tectonic structures and signal shredding. More widely, we consider that ancient landscapes offer a valuable insight into long-term environmental change, but refinements to geomorphometric approaches are needed

    Distinct gut virome profile of pregnant women with type 1 diabetes in the ENDIA study

    Background:The importance of gut bacteria in human physiology, immune regulation, and disease pathogenesis is well established. In contrast, the composition and dynamics of the gut virome are largely unknown; particularly lacking are studies in pregnancy. We used comprehensive virome capture sequencing to characterize the gut virome of pregnant women with and without type 1 diabetes (T1D), longitudinally followed in the Environmental Determinants of Islet Autoimmunity study. Methods:In total, 61 pregnant women (35 with T1D and 26 without) from Australia were examined. Nucleic acid was extracted from serial fecal specimens obtained at prenatal visits, and viral genomes were sequenced by virome capture enrichment. The frequency, richness, and abundance of viruses were compared between women with and without T1D. Results:Two viruses were more prevalent in pregnant women with T1D: picobirnaviruses (odds ratio [OR], 4.2; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.0-17.1; P = .046) and tobamoviruses (OR, 3.2; 95% CI, 1.1-9.3; P = .037). The abundance of 77 viruses significantly differed between the 2 maternal groups (≥2-fold difference; P < .02), including 8 Enterovirus B types present at a higher abundance in women with T1D. Conclusions:These findings provide novel insight into the composition of the gut virome during pregnancy and demonstrate a distinct profile of viruses in women with T1D.Ki Wook Kim, Digby W.     Standardizing nasal nitric oxide measurement as a test for primary ciliary dyskinesia

    Rationale: Several studies suggest that nasal nitric oxide (nNO) measurement could be a test for primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), but the procedure and interpretation have not been standardized. Objectives: Touse a standard protocol formeasuringnNOtoestablishadiseasespecific cutoff value at one site, and then validate at six other sites. Methods: At the lead site, nNO was prospectively measured in individuals later confirmed to have PCD by ciliary ultrastructural defects (n = 143) or DNAH11 mutations (n = 6); and in 78 healthy and 146 disease control subjects, including individuals with asthma (n = 37), cystic fibrosis (n = 77), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (n = 32). A disease-specific cutoff value was determined, using generalized estimating equations (GEEs). Six other sites prospectively measured nNO in 155 consecutive individuals enrolled for evaluation for possible PCD. Measurements and Main Results: At the lead site, nNO values in PCD (mean6standard deviation, 20.7624.1 nl/min; range, 1.5-207.3 nl/min) only rarely overlapped with the nNO values of healthy control subjects (304.6 6 118.8; 125.5-867.0 nl/min), asthma (267.8 6 103.2; 125.0-589.7 nl/min), or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (223.7 6 87.1; 109.7-449.1 nl/min); however, therewas overlapwith cystic fibrosis (134.0673.5; 15.6-386.1 nl/min). The disease-specific nNOcutoff valuewas defined at 77 nl/minute (sensitivity, 0.98; specificity, .0.999). At six other sites, this cutoff identified 70 of the 71 (98.6%) participants with confirmed PCD. Conclusions: Using a standardized protocol in multicenter studies, nNO measurement accurately identifies individuals with PCD, and supports its usefulness as a test to support the clinical diagnosis of PCD

    Counterpoint. Early intervention for psychosis risk syndromes: Minimizing risk and maximizing benefit

    Background: Malhi et al. in this issue critique the clinical high risk (CHR) syndrome for psychosis. Method: Response to points of critique. Results: We agree that inconsistency in CHR nomenclature should be minimized. We respectfully disagree on other points. In our view: a) individuals with CHR and their families need help, using existing interventions, even though we do not yet fully understand disease mechanisms; b) substantial progress has been made in identification of biomarkers; c) symptoms used to identify CHR are specific to psychotic illnesses; d) CHR diagnosis is not “extremely difficult”; e) the pattern of progression, although heterogenous, is discernible; f) “psychosis-like symptoms” are common but are not used to identify CHR; and g) on the point described as ‘the real risk,’ CHR diagnosis does not frequently cause harmful stigma. Discussion: Malhi et al.'s arguments do not fairly characterize progress in the CHR field nor efforts to minimize stigma. That said, much work remains in areas of consistent nomenclature, mechanisms of disease, dissecting heterogeneity, and biomarkers. With regard to what the authors term the “real risk” of stigma associated with a CHR “label,” however, our view is that avoiding words like “risk” and “psychosis” reinforces the stigma that both they and we mean to oppose. Moreover, patients and their families benefit from being given a term that describes what is happening to them
