    Optimized magneto-optical isolator designs inspired by seedlayer-free terbium iron garnets with opposite chirality

    Simulations demonstrate that undoped yttrium iron garnet (YIG) seedlayers cause reduced Faraday rotation in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides with Ce-doped YIG claddings. Undoped seedlayers are required for the crystallization of the magneto-optical Ce:YIG claddings, but they diminish the interaction of the Ce:YIG with the guided modes. Therefore new magneto-optical garnets, terbium iron garnet (TIG) and bismuth-doped TIG (Bi:TIG), are introduced that can be integrated directly on Si and quartz substrates without seedlayers. The Faraday rotations of TIG and Bi:TIG films at 1550nm were measured to be +500 and -500°/cm, respectively. Simulations show that these new garnets have the potential to significantly mitigate the negative impact of the seedlayers under Ce:YIG claddings. The successful growth of TIG and Bi:TIG on low-index fused quartz inspired novel garnet-core waveguide isolator designs, simulated using finite difference time domain (FDTD) methods. These designs use alternating segments of positive and negative Faraday rotation for push-pull quasi phase matching in order to overcome birefringence in waveguides with rectangular cross-sections

    We revisit χQJ+\chi_{QJ}\to \ell^+\ell^- (with J=0,1,2J=0,1,2 and Q=b,cQ=b,c) within the Standard Model (SM). The electro-magnetic contributions are given in color-singlet model with non-vanishing lepton masses at the leading order of vv. Numerically, the branching ratios of χQJ+\chi_{QJ}\to\ell^{+}\ell^{-} predicted within the SM are so small that such decays are barely possible to be detected at future BESIII and SuperB experiments, but may be possible to be observed at the LHC. We investigate χb0+\chi_{b0}\to\ell^+\ell^- in Type-II 2HDM with large tanβ\tan\beta, and χb2+\chi_{b2}\to\ell^+\ell^- in the Randall-Sundrum model, to see their chance to be observed in future experiments.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures.     Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.

    BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF.     The self-accelerating expanding cylindrical stoichiometric hydrogen-air flames at eight atmospheres were studied via two-dimensional direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with detailed chemistry. The flame morphology and propagation were finely resolved by the application of a time step of 2.5 ns and a grid size of 4 ??m. Temporally, the intermittent propagation of the flame front is captured through examining its propagation velocity. Spatially, the flame front is found to be comprised of segments exhibiting similar propagation properties, i.e. the intermittent instantaneous propagation of the flame front is attributed to the development of cellular structures induced by hydrodynamic instability. The long-term average propagation velocity of the flame front is described by a power law, with a self-acceleration exponent of 1.22 for the flame radius with respect to time. The increase in the global flame velocity is shown to be primarily a consequence of increased flame surface area, with the local front propagation velocity remaining largely at the constant laminar flame speed for the near-unity Lewis number mixture studied herein.close0

    Polyoxometalate-mediated one-pot synthesis of pd nanocrystals with controlled morphologies for efficient chemical and electrochemical catalysis

    Polyoxometalates (POMs), as inorganic ligands, can endow metal nanocrystals (NCs) with unique reactivities on account of their characteristic redox properties. In the present work, we present a facile POM-mediated one-pot aqueous synthesis method for the production of single-crystalline Pd NCs with controlled shapes and sizes. The POMs could function as both reducing and stabilizing agents in the formation of NCs, and thus gave a fine control over the nucleation and growth kinetics of NCs. The prepared POM-stabilized Pd NCs exhibited excellent catalytic activity and stability for electrocatalytic (formic acid oxidation) and catalytic (Suzuki coupling) reactions compared to Pd NCs prepared without the POMs. This shows that the POMs play a pivotal role in determining the catalytic performance, as well as the growth, of NCs. We envision that the present approach can offer a convenient way to develop efficient NC-based catalyst systems. Single-crystalline Pd nanocrystals with controlled shapes and sizes were synthesized by a polyoxometalate-mediated one-pot aqueous synthesis method.
