Solving the Sports League Scheduling Problem with Tabu Search
In this paper we present a tabu approach for a version of the Sports League Scheduling Problem. The approach adopted is based on a formulation of the problem as a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP). Tests were carried out on problem instances of up to 40 teams representing 780 integer variables with 780 values per variable. Experimental results show that this approach outperforms some existing methods and is one of the most promising methods for solving problems of this type
Transport in rough self-affine fractures
Transport properties of three-dimensional self-affine rough fractures are
studied by means of an effective-medium analysis and numerical simulations
using the Lattice-Boltzmann method. The numerical results show that the
effective-medium approximation predicts the right scaling behavior of the
permeability and of the velocity fluctuations, in terms of the aperture of the
fracture, the roughness exponent and the characteristic length of the fracture
surfaces, in the limit of small separation between surfaces. The permeability
of the fractures is also investigated as a function of the normal and lateral
relative displacements between surfaces, and is shown that it can be bounded by
the permeability of two-dimensional fractures. The development of channel-like
structures in the velocity field is also numerically investigated for different
relative displacements between surfaces. Finally, the dispersion of tracer
particles in the velocity field of the fractures is investigated by analytic
and numerical methods. The asymptotic dominant role of the geometric
dispersion, due to velocity fluctuations and their spatial correlations, is
shown in the limit of very small separation between fracture surfaces.Comment: submitted to PR
Excitation and decay of projectile-like fragments formed in dissipative peripheral collisions at intermediate energies
Projectile-like fragments (PLF:15<=Z<=46) formed in peripheral and
mid-peripheral collisions of 114Cd projectiles with 92Mo nuclei at E/A=50 MeV
have been detected at very forward angles, 2.1 deg.<=theta_lab<=4.2 deg.
Calorimetric analysis of the charged particles observed in coincidence with the
PLF reveals that the excitation of the primary PLF is strongly related to its
velocity damping. Furthermore, for a given V_PLF*, its excitation is not
related to its size, Z_PLF*. For the largest velocity damping, the excitation
energy attained is large, approximately commensurate with a system at the

Multifragmentation in Xe(50A MeV)+Sn Confrontation of theory and data
We compare in detail central collisions Xe(50A MeV) + Sn, recently measured
by the INDRA collaboration, with the Quantum Molecular Dynamics (QMD) model in
order to identify the reaction mechanism which leads to multifragmentation. We
find that QMD describes the data quite well, in the projectile/target region as
well as in the midrapidity zone where also statistical models can be and have
been employed. The agreement between QMD and data allows to use this dynamical
model to investigate the reaction in detail. We arrive at the following
observations: a) the in medium nucleon nucleon cross section is not
significantly different from the free cross section, b) even the most central
collisions have a binary character, c) most of the fragments are produced in
the central collisions and d) the simulations as well as the data show a strong
attractive in-plane flow resembling deep inelastic collisions e) at midrapidity
the results from QMD and those from statistical model calculations agree for
almost all observables with the exception of . This
renders it difficult to extract the reaction mechanism from midrapidity
fragments only. According to the simulations the reaction shows a very early
formation of fragments, even in central collisions, which pass through the
reaction zone without being destroyed. The final transverse momentum of the
fragments is very close to the initial one and due to the Fermi motion. A
heating up of the systems is not observed and hence a thermal origin of the
spectra cannot be confirmed.Comment: figures 1 and 2 changed (no more ps -errors
Production of neutron-rich fragments with neutron number N > Nprojectile in the reaction Ca (60 MeV/nucleon) + Ta
Expérience GANIL, Spectrometre LISEInternational audienceThe goal of the present paper is to attempt to clarify the nuclear reaction mechanism leading to the production of fragments at zero degree with neutron number larger than that in the 48Ca projectile, at about 60 MeV per nucleon. The production cross sections of the extremely neutron-rich Si and P isotopes were measured. Concerning the nuclear reaction mechanism leading to the production of these isotopes, one should probably refer to a particular type of transfer mechanism, which results in low excitation energy for the fragments, rather than to the ‘genuine' fragmentation mechanism. An upper limit of about 0.05 pb was estimated for the production cross section for the 47P isotope for which no count was observed
Study of intermediate velocity products in the Ar+Ni collisions between 52 and 95 A.MeV
Intermediate velocity products in Ar+Ni collisions from 52 to 95 A.MeV are
studied in an experiment performed at the GANIL facility with the 4
multidetector INDRA. It is shown that these emissions cannot be explained by
statistical decays of the quasi-projectile and the quasi-target in complete
equilibrium. Three methods are used to isolate and characterize intermediate
velocity products. The total mass of these products increases with the violence
of the collision and reaches a large fraction of the system mass in mid-central
collisions. This mass is found independent of the incident energy, but strongly
dependent on the geometry of the collision. Finally it is shown that the
kinematical characteristics of intermediate velocity products are weakly
dependent on the experimental impact parameter, but strongly dependent on the
incident energy. The observed trends are consistent with a
participant-spectator like scenario or with neck emissions and/or break-up.Comment: 37 pages, 13 figure
Generating Sustainable Value from Open Data in a Sharing Society
Part 1: Creating ValueInternational audienceOur societies are in the midst of a paradigm shift that transforms hierarchal markets into an open and networked economy based on digital technology and information. In that context, open data is widely presumed to have a positive effect on social, environmental and economic value; however the evidence to that effect has remained scarce. Subsequently, we address the question how the use of open data can stimulate the generation of sustainable value. We argue that open data sharing and reuse can empower new ways of generating value in the sharing society. Moreover, we propose a model that describes how different mechanisms that take part within an open system generate sustainable value. These mechanisms are enabled by a number of contextual factors that provide individuals with the motivation, opportunity and ability to generate sustainable value
