Descriptors of dimensionality for n Ă— n density matrices

    Get PDF
By using the recently introduced parametrization of an n-dimensional density matrix in terms of the indices of population asymmetry and the intrinsic coherences, we define descriptors in both integer and continuous forms of the effective dimension that take place for a complete description of a density matrix, thus providing accurate information beyond the rank of the density matrix. The concepts of dimensional folding, hidden dimensional purity, and dimensional entropy are introduced and discussed in view of the new approach presented. The results are applicable to any physical system represented by a density matrix, such as n-level quantum systems, qutrits, sets of interacting pencils of radiation, classical polarization states, and to transformations of density matrices, as occurs with quantum channels

    Spin of random stationary light

We develop a theoretical foundation for the spin angular momentum (SAM) of random, statistically stationary polychromatic light fields within the framework of classical optical coherence theory. The formulation is valid for fields of arbitrary frequency bandwidth and dimensionality. Both temporal and spectral representations are given, and we further elucidate the relationship between the SAM and the polarization characteristics of such fields as compared to monochromatic light. The special cases of quasimonochromatic light and planar fields are analyzed separately. Generally, our paper offers deeper insights into the SAM and polarization structures as well as their interlinked connections in random stationary light, which could be beneficial in exploiting SAM in stochastic optical near fields and tightly focused beams exhibiting complex polarization character

Invariant indices of polarimetric purity. Generalized indices of purity for nxn covariance matrices

A proper set of indices characterizing the polarimetric purity of light and material media is defined from the eigenvalues of the corresponding coherency matrix. A simple and generalizable relation of these indices with the current parameters characterizing the global purity is obtained. A general definition for systems characterized by nxn positive semidefinite Hermitian matrices is introduced in terms of the corresponding eigenvalues and diagonal Gell-Mann matrices. The set of n-1 indices of purity has a nested structure and provide complete information about the statistical purity of the system.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figure

Structure of polarimetric purity of three-dimensional polarization states

    Get PDF
It has recently been demonstrated that a general three-dimensional (3D) polarization state cannot be considered an incoherent superposition of (1) a pure state, (2) a two-dimensional unpolarized state, and (3) a 3D unpolarized state [J. J. Gil, Phys. Rev. A 90, 043858 (2014)10.1103/PhysRevA.90.043858]. This fact is intimately linked to the existence of 3D polarization states with fluctuating directions of propagation, but whose associated polarization matrices R satisfy rank R=2. In this work, such peculiar states are analyzed and characterized, leading to a meaningful general classification and interpretation of 3D polarization states. Within this theoretical framework, the interrelations among the more significant polarization descriptors presented in the literature, as well as their respective physical interpretations, are studied and illustrated with examples, providing a better understanding of the structure of polarimetric purity of any kind of polarization state

Preliminary studies on the conservation of whole sorghum and corn plant and sugar corn stover for silage

The whole corn plant and sugar corn stover were ensiled in stacks covered with plastics and soil. Sorghum was ensiled in tower silo. The amounts of fodder ensiled were 2 500 kg, 3 100 kg and 1400 kg, respectively. All silages were chopped with a precision chopper and ensiled without preservatives. The feeding values of the silages were determined with sheep according to 2 X 3 X 3 Latin square design. Urea (0.3 % of the fresh weight) was added to the silages before feeding. An intense secondary fermentation was found in all silages. The possible causes for this were the soil contamination of the fodder during harvesting and the effluent remained in the stack silages. The secondary fermentation decreased the sugar content of the silages and increased the fermentation losses especially in the corn silage. However, the quality of the silages was fairly good. Urea decreased the palatability of the silages and it would be better to add the urea to the silages before the ensiling. The energy and DCP values of the silages were quite modest. There were 0.63, 0.72 and 0.69 f.u./kg silage DM in sorghum, corn and corn stover silages, respectively The corresponding values for DCP were 75, 62 and 86 g/kg silage DM (urea included)

Polarization beating of random electromagnetic beams

    Get PDF
We consider temporal interference of two stationary, quasi-monochromatic, partially polarized optical beams with different mean frequencies. We show that both the intensity and the polarization state, represented by the Stokes parameters, exhibit beating, i.e., periodic temporal variation with frequency specified by the difference of the mean frequencies. The contrasts, or visibilities, of the Stokes-parameter changes are characterized by the equal-time electromagnetic degree of coherence between the beams. If the beams are otherwise identical random processes, but with spectra centered at different frequencies, then the polarization modulation is characterized by the degree of polarization, consistently with a recent interferometric interpretation of this quantity. Our results provide insight into the role of polarization in beating of electromagnetic waves
