Modulator for tone and binary signals
Tones and binary information are transmitted as phase variations on a carrier wave of constant amplitude and frequency. The carrier and tones are applied to a balanced modulator for deriving an output signal including a pair of sidebands relative to the carrier. The carrier is phase modulated by a digital signal so that it is + or - 90 deg out of phase with the predetermined phase of the carrier. The carrier is combined in an algebraic summing device with the phase modulated signal and the balanced modulator output signal. The output of the algebraic summing device is hard limited to derive a constant amplitude and frequency signal having very narrow bandwidth requirements. At a receiver, the tones and binary data are detected with a phase locked loop having a voltage controlled oscillator driving a pair of orthogonal detection channels
Observation of fast stochastic ion heating by drift waves
Anomalously fast ion heating has been observed in the Caltech Encore tokamak [Phys. Rev. Lett. 59, 1436 (1987)], with the use of laser-induced fluorescence. This heating was found to be independent of electron temperature, but was well correlated with the presence of large-amplitude drift-Alfvén waves. Evidence is presented that suggests that the heating is stochastic and occurs when the ion displacement due to polarization drift becomes comparable to the perpendicular wavelength, i.e., when k[perpendicular] (mik[perpendicular] phi0/qB^2)~1. Stochastic heating may also be the cause of the anomalously high ion temperatures observed in reversed-field pinches
Interlayer interaction and electronic screening in multilayer graphene
The unusual transport properties of graphene are the direct consequence of a
peculiar bandstructure near the Dirac point. We determine the shape of the pi
bands and their characteristic splitting, and the transition from a pure 2D to
quasi-2D behavior for 1 to 4 layers of graphene by angle-resolved
photoemission. By exploiting the sensitivity of the pi bands to the electronic
potential, we derive the layer-dependent carrier concentration, screening
length and strength of interlayer interaction by comparison with tight binding
calculations, yielding a comprehensive description of multilayer graphene's
electronic structure
Memory B cells and CD8⁺ lymphocytes do not control seasonal influenza A virus replication after homologous re-challenge of rhesus macaques.
This study sought to define the role of memory lymphocytes in the protection from homologous influenza A virus re-challenge in rhesus macaques. Depleting monoclonal antibodies (mAb) were administered to the animals prior to their second experimental inoculation with a human seasonal influenza A virus strain. Treatment with either anti-CD8α or anti-CD20 mAbs prior to re-challenge had minimal effect on influenza A virus replication. Thus, in non-human primates with pre-existing anti-influenza A antibodies, memory B cells and CD8α⁺ T cells do not contribute to the control of virus replication after re-challenge with a homologous strain of influenza A virus
Infection with host-range mutant adenovirus 5 suppresses innate immunity and induces systemic CD4+ T cell activation in rhesus macaques.
Ad5 is a common cause of respiratory disease and an occasional cause of gastroenteritis and conjunctivitis, and seroconversion before adolescence is common in humans. To gain some insight into how Ad5 infection affects the immune system of rhesus macaques (RM) 18 RM were infected with a host-range mutant Ad5 (Ad5hr) by 3 mucosal inoculations. There was a delay of 2 to 6 weeks after the first inoculation before plasmacytoid dendritic cell (pDC) frequency and function increased in peripheral blood. Primary Ad5hr infection suppressed IFN-γ mRNA expression, but the second Ad5hr exposure induced a rapid increase in IFN-gamma mRNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Primary Ad5hr infection suppressed CCL20, TNF and IL-1 mRNA expression in PBMC, and subsequent virus exposures further dampened expression of these pro-inflammatory cytokines. Primary, but not secondary, Ad5hr inoculation increased the frequency of CXCR3+ CD4+ T cells in blood, while secondary, but not primary, Ad5hr infection transiently increased the frequencies of Ki67+, HLADR+ and CD95+/CCR5+ CD4+ T cells in blood. Ad5hr infection induced polyfunctional CD4 and CD8+ T cells specific for the Ad5 hexon protein in all of the animals. Thus, infection with Ad5hr induced a complex pattern of innate and adaptive immunity in RM that included transient systemic CD4+ T cell activation and suppressed innate immunity on re-exposure to the virus. The complex effects of adenovirus infection on the immune system may help to explain the unexpected results of testing Ad5 vector expressing HIV antigens in Ad5 seropositive people
Drift waves in the corona: heating and acceleration of ions at frequencies far below the gyro frequency
In the solar corona, several mechanisms of the drift wave instability can
make the mode growing up to amplitudes at which particle acceleration and
stochastic heating by the drift wave take place. The stochastic heating, well
known from laboratory plasma physics where it has been confirmed in numerous
experiments, has been completely ignored in past studies of coronal heating.
However, in the present study and in our very recent works it has been shown
that the inhomogeneous coronal plasma is, in fact, a perfect environment for
fast growing drift waves. As a matter of fact, the large growth rates are
typically of the same order as the plasma frequency. The consequent heating
rates may exceed the required values for a sustained coronal heating by several
orders of magnitude. Some aspects of these phenomena are investigated here. In
particular the analysis of the particle dynamics within the growing wave is
compared with the corresponding fluid analysis. While both of them predict the
stochastic heating, the threshold for the heating obtained from the single
particle analysis is higher. The explanation for this effect is given.Comment: To appear in MNRAS (2010
Strictly One-Dimensional Electron System in Au Chains on Ge(001) Revealed By Photoelectron K-Space Mapping
Atomic nanowires formed by Au on Ge(001) are scrutinized for the band
topology of the conduction electron system by k-resolved photoemission. Two
metallic electron pockets are observed. Their Fermi surface sheets form
straight lines without undulations perpendicular to the chains within
experimental uncertainty. The electrons hence emerge as strictly confined to
one dimension. Moreover, the system is stable against a Peierls distortion down
to 10 K, lending itself for studies of the spectral function. Indications for

Accountability and Transparency of Entrepreneurial Journalism: Unresolved ethical issues in crowdfunded journalism projects
Crowdfunding is a new business model in which journalists rely—and depend—on (micro-) payments by a large number of supporters to finance their reporting. In this form of entrepreneurial journalism the roles of publisher, fundraiser and journalist often overlap. This raises questions about conflicts of interest, accountability and transparency. The article presents the results of selected case studies in four different European countries—Germany (Krautreporter), Italy (Occhidellaguerra), the United Kingdom (Contributoria) and the Netherlands (De Correspondent)—as well as one US example (Kickstarter). The study used a two-step methodological approach: first a content analysis of the websites and the Twitter accounts with regard to practices of media accountability, transparency and user participation was undertaken. The aim was to investigate how far ethical challenges in crowdfunded entrepreneurial journalism are accounted for. Second, we present findings from semi-structured interviews with journalists from each crowdfunding. The study provides evidence about the ethical issues in this area, particularly in relation to production transparency and responsiveness. The study also shows that in some cases of crowdfunding (platforms), accountability is outsourced and implemented only through the audience participation
