    Variable cavity volume tooling for high-performance resin infusion moulding

    This article describes the research carried out by Warwick under the BAE Systems/EPSRC programme ‘Flapless Aerial Vehicles Integrated Interdisciplinary Research – FLAVIIR’. Warwick's aim in FLAVIIR was to develop low-cost innovative tooling technologies to enable the affordable manufacture of complex composite aerospace structures and to help realize the aim of the Grand Challenge of maintenance-free, low-cost unmanned aerial vehicle manufacture. This article focuses on the evaluation of a novel tooling process (variable cavity tooling) to enable the complete infusion of resin throughout non-crimp fabric within a mould cavity under low (0.1 MPa) injection pressure. The contribution of the primary processing parameters to the mechanical properties of a carbon composite component (bulk-head lug section), and the interactions between parameters, was determined. The initial mould gap (di) was identified as having the most significant effect on all measured mechanical properties, but complex interactions between di, n (number of fabric layers), and vc (mould closure rate) were observed. The process capability was low due to the manual processing, but was improved through process optimization, and delivered properties comparable to high-pressure resin transfer moulding

    We propose two novel experiments on the measurement of the Casimir force acting between a gold coated sphere and semiconductor plates with markedly different charge carrier densities. In the first of these experiments a patterned Si plate is used which consists of two sections of different dopant densities and oscillates in the horizontal direction below a sphere. The measurement scheme in this experiment is differential, i.e., allows the direct high-precision measurement of the difference of the Casimir forces between the sphere and sections of the patterned plate or the difference of the equivalent pressures between Au and patterned parallel plates with static and dynamic techniques, respectively. The second experiment proposes to measure the Casimir force between the same sphere and a VO2{}_2 film which undergoes the insulator-metal phase transition with the increase of temperature. We report the present status of the interferometer based variable temperature apparatus developed to perform both experiments and present the first results on the calibration and sensitivity. The magnitudes of the Casimir forces and pressures in the experimental configurations are calculated using different theoretical approaches to the description of optical and conductivity properties of semiconductors at low frequencies proposed in the literature. It is shown that the suggested experiments will aid in the resolution of theoretical problems arising in the application of the Lifshitz theory at nonzero temperature to real materials.     A lean six sigma framework for continuous and incremental improvement in the oil and gas sector

    This article aims to explore synergies between Lean Production (LP) and Six Sigma principles in order to propose a Lean Six Sigma (LSS) framework for continuous and incremental improvement in the oil and gas sector. The Three-Dimensional LSS Framework seeks to provide various combinations about the integration between LP principles, DMAIC cycle and PDCA cycle to support operations management needs. Design/methodology/approach - The research method is composed of two main steps: (i) diagnostic of current problems and proposition of a conceptual framework that qualitatively integrates synergistic aspects of LP and Six Sigma; and (ii) analysis of the application of the construct through semi-structured interviews with leaders from oil and gas companies to assess and validate the proposed framework. Findings - As a result, a conceptual framework of LSS is developed contemplating the integration of LP and Six Sigma and providing a systemic and holistic approach to problemsolving through continuous and incremental improvement in the oil and gas sector. Originality/value - This research is different from previous studies because it integrates LP principles, DMAIC and PDCA cycles into a unique framework that fulfils a specific need of oil and gas sector. It presents a customized LSS framework that guides wastes and costs reduction, while enhances quality and reduces process variability to elevate efficiency in operations management of this sector.     Benevolent characteristics promote cooperative behaviour among humans

    Cooperation is fundamental to the evolution of human society. We regularly observe cooperative behaviour in everyday life and in controlled experiments with anonymous people, even though standard economic models predict that they should deviate from the collective interest and act so as to maximise their own individual payoff. However, there is typically heterogeneity across subjects: some may cooperate, while others may not. Since individual factors promoting cooperation could be used by institutions to indirectly prime cooperation, this heterogeneity raises the important question of who these cooperators are. We have conducted a series of experiments to study whether benevolence, defined as a unilateral act of paying a cost to increase the welfare of someone else beyond one's own, is related to cooperation in a subsequent one-shot anonymous Prisoner's dilemma. Contrary to the predictions of the widely used inequity aversion models, we find that benevolence does exist and a large majority of people behave this way. We also find benevolence to be correlated with cooperative behaviour. Finally, we show a causal link between benevolence and cooperation: priming people to think positively about benevolent behaviour makes them significantly more cooperative than priming them to think malevolently. Thus benevolent people exist and cooperate more

    En la obtención de un complejo ovoalbúmina-antioxidantes provenientes del té verde (Camellia sinensis) predominan las catequinas, se realizaron pruebas a distintos valores de pH, se obtuvo un mayor porcentaje de encapsulación a pH 4. Se emplearon distintas concentraciones de ovoalbúmina a pH4, obteniéndose una mayor eficiencia con 0.5% p/v de proteína. Esta metodología de encapsulación que se fundamenta en el método de gelación iónica, tiene como beneficio para la industria alimentaria y/o desarrollo de alimentos funcionales, la protección de los antioxidantes por medio de un complejo que se puede utilizar como aditivo en alimentos y evitar la degradación que originan diversos procesos o condiciones de almacenamiento

    New solar axion search in CAST with 4^4He filling

    The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) searches for aγa\to\gamma conversion in the 9 T magnetic field of a refurbished LHC test magnet that can be directed toward the Sun. Two parallel magnet bores can be filled with helium of adjustable pressure to match the X-ray refractive mass mγm_\gamma to the axion search mass mam_a. After the vacuum phase (2003--2004), which is optimal for ma0.02m_a\lesssim0.02 eV, we used 4^4He in 2005--2007 to cover the mass range of 0.02--0.39 eV and 3^3He in 2009--2011 to scan from 0.39--1.17 eV. After improving the detectors and shielding, we returned to 4^4He in 2012 to investigate a narrow mam_a range around 0.2 eV ("candidate setting" of our earlier search) and 0.39--0.42 eV, the upper axion mass range reachable with 4^4He, to "cross the axion line" for the KSVZ model. We have improved the limit on the axion-photon coupling to gaγ<1.47×1010GeV1g_{a\gamma}< 1.47\times10^{-10} {\rm GeV}^{-1} (95% C.L.), depending on the pressure settings.     Results and perspectives of the solar axion search with the CAST experiment

    The status of the solar axion search with the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) will be presented. Recent results obtained by the use of 3^3He as a buffer gas has allowed us to extend our sensitivity to higher axion masses than our previous measurements with 4^4He. With about 1 h of data taking at each of 252 different pressure settings we have scanned the axion mass range 0.39 eVma \le m_{a} \le 0.64 eV. From the absence of an excess of x rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun we set a typical upper limit on the axion-photon coupling of gaγ2.3×1010_{a\gamma} \le 2.3\times 10^{-10} GeV1^{-1} at 95% C.L., the exact value depending on the pressure setting. CAST published results represent the best experimental limit on the photon couplings to axions and other similar exotic particles dubbed WISPs (Weakly Interacting Slim Particles) in the considered mass range and for the first time the limit enters the region favored by QCD axion models. Preliminary sensitivities for axion masses up to 1.16 eV will also be shown reaching mean upper limits on the axion-photon coupling of gaγ3.5×1010_{a\gamma} \le 3.5\times 10^{-10} GeV1^{-1} at 95% C.L. Expected sensibilities for the extension of the CAST program up to 2014 will be presented.
