    Flowering and pollination studies with European plum (Prunus domestica L.) cultivars

    One of the most important factors affecting the financial outcome of commercial fruit growing is the success of pollination and fertilization, which in turn are dependent on weather conditions, activity of pollinators and the compatibility and overlap in flowering of the cultivars. Before introducing new cultivars, it is obviously important to know the compatibility and flowering characteristics of the genotypes. In order to find out these attributes of seven new and four established plum cultivars, pollen germination tests, hand pollinations and flowering phenology observations were carried out. ‘Prosser 84’ had 70% pollen germination. ‘Opal’ had just 3%, probably due to aged pollen. ‘Anna SpĂ€th’ flowered over a short period (13 days) and ‘1468’ and ‘DCA BO 46’ over long (19 days) periods; the overlap of all cultivars was relatively good. With ‘1468’, ‘Victory’, ‘Anna SpĂ€th’ and ‘Prosser 84’ flowering intensity varied between years, ‘Jubileum’, ‘V70032’, ‘Tita’ and ‘DCA BO 46’ flowered regularly, the others were intermediate. ‘1468’ and ‘WJ 65’ flowered early, ‘Prosser 84’ and ‘DCA BO 46’ late and the rest fell in between. ‘Victoria’ proved to be self-fertile, ‘Jubileum’, ‘V70032’ and ‘1468’ semi self-fertile. Fruit set percentages after June drop of all crosses were rather low; varying between 0 and 28%. With ‘Tita’, fruit drop occurred approximately two weeks later than with the other cultivar

    Measuring concept similarities in multimedia ontologies: analysis and evaluations

    The recent development of large-scale multimedia concept ontologies has provided a new momentum for research in the semantic analysis of multimedia repositories. Different methods for generic concept detection have been extensively studied, but the question of how to exploit the structure of a multimedia ontology and existing inter-concept relations has not received similar attention. In this paper, we present a clustering-based method for modeling semantic concepts on low-level feature spaces and study the evaluation of the quality of such models with entropy-based methods. We cover a variety of methods for assessing the similarity of different concepts in a multimedia ontology. We study three ontologies and apply the proposed techniques in experiments involving the visual and semantic similarities, manual annotation of video, and concept detection. The results show that modeling inter-concept relations can provide a promising resource for many different application areas in semantic multimedia processing

    The interaction of lean and building information modeling in construction

    Lean construction and Building Information Modeling are quite different initiatives, but both are having profound impacts on the construction industry. A rigorous analysis of the myriad specific interactions between them indicates that a synergy exists which, if properly understood in theoretical terms, can be exploited to improve construction processes beyond the degree to which it might be improved by application of either of these paradigms independently. Using a matrix that juxtaposes BIM functionalities with prescriptive lean construction principles, fifty-six interactions have been identified, all but four of which represent constructive interaction. Although evidence for the majority of these has been found, the matrix is not considered complete, but rather a framework for research to explore the degree of validity of the interactions. Construction executives, managers, designers and developers of IT systems for construction can also benefit from the framework as an aid to recognizing the potential synergies when planning their lean and BIM adoption strategies

    Background: In healthy preterm infants, cortical burst rate and temporal dynamics predict important measures such as brain growth. We hypothesised that in preterm infants with germinal matrix-intraventricular haemorrhage (GM-IVH), cortical bursting could provide prognostic information. / Aims: We determined how cortical bursting was influenced by the injury, and whether this was related to developmental outcome. / Study design: Single-centre retrospective cohort study at University College London Hospitals, UK. / Subjects: 33 infants with GM-IVH ≄ grade II (median gestational age: 25 weeks). / Outcome measures: We identified 47 EEGs acquired between 24 and 40 weeks corrected gestational age as part of routine clinical care. In a subset of 33 EEGs from 25 infants with asymmetric injury, we used the least-affected hemisphere as an internal comparison. We tested whether cortical burst rate predicted survival without severe impairment (median 2 years follow-up). / Results: In asymmetric injury, cortical burst rate was lower over the worst- than least-affected hemisphere, and bursts over the worst-affected hemisphere were less likely to immediately follow bursts over the least-affected hemisphere than vice versa. Overall, burst rate was lower in cases of GM-IVH with parenchymal involvement, relative to milder structural injury grades. Higher burst rate modestly predicted survival without severe language (AUC 0.673) or motor impairment (AUC 0.667), which was partly mediated by structural injury grade. / Conclusions: Cortical bursting can index the functional injury after GM-IVH: perturbed burst initiation (rate) and propagation (inter-hemispheric dynamics) likely reflect associated grey matter and white matter damage. Higher cortical burst rate is reassuring for a positive outcome

    Is local best? Examining the evidence for local adaptation in trees and its scale

    Although the importance of using local provenance planting stock for woodland production, habitat conservation and restoration remains contentious, the concept is easy to understand, attractive and easy to ‘sell’. With limited information about the extent and scale of adaptive variation in native trees, discussion about suitable seed sources often emphasises “local” in a very narrow sense or within political boundaries, rather than being based on sound evidence of the scale over which adaptation occurs. Concerns exist over the actual scale (magnitude and spatial scale) of adaptation in trees and the relative dangers of incorrect seed source or restricted seed collection, leading to the establishment of trees with restricted genetic diversity and limited adaptive potential. Tree provenance and progeny field trials in many parts of the world have shown the existence of genotype by environment interaction in many tree species, but have not necessarily looked at whether this is expressed as a home site advantage (i.e. whether provenance performance is unstable across sites, and there is better performance of a local seed source). This review will examine the evidence for local adaptation and its scale in a number of native tree species from different trial sites across the globe (e.g. tropical, Mediterranean, temperate). These trials have been measured and in some cases results published in a range of formats. The data have, however, usually been presented in the form of which provenances grow best at which sites. The review will examine existing data (published and unpublished) in the context of the scale of local adaptation, with the results being presented in two formats: (a) relating survival, performance of provenances (classified by seed zone/provenance region of origin) to seed zone/provenance region of the planting site; (b) plotting survival, performance provenances against the distance (Euclidean/ecological) between the provenance and the trial site
