Bioinspired Synthesis of Reduced Graphene Oxide-Wrapped Geobacter sulfurreducens as a Hybrid Electrocatalyst for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Doping/decorating of graphene or reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with heteroatoms provides a promising route for the development of electrocatalysts which will be useful in many technologies, including water splitting. However, current doping approaches are complicated, not eco-friendly, and not cost-effective. Herein, we report the synthesis of doped/decorated rGO for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) using a simple approach that is cost-effective, sustainable, and easy to scale up. The OER catalyst was derived from the reduction of GO by an exo-electron-transferring bacterium, Geobacter sulfurreducens. Various analytical tools indicate that OER active elements such as Fe, Cu, N, P, and S decorate the rGO flakes. The hybrid catalyst (i.e., Geobacter/rGO) produces a geometric current density of 10 mA cm–2 at an overpotential of 270 mV versus the reversible hydrogen electrode with a Tafel slope of 43 mV dec–1 and possesses high durability, as evidenced through 10 h of stability testing. Electrochemical analyses suggest the importance of Fe and its possible role as an active site for OER. Overall, this work represents a simple approach toward the development of an earth-abundant, eco-friendly, and highly active OER electrocatalyst for various applications such as solar fuel production, rechargeable metal–air batteries, and microbial electrosynthesis

EARTH QUAKE PROGNOSTICATION USING DATA MINING AND CURVE FITTING TECHNIQUES

The title “EARTHQUAKE PROGNOSTICATION” is a Global Earthquake prediction, that is used to predict that an earthquake of a specific magnitude will occur in a particular place at a particular time, we however cannot tell the exact time and date the earthquake is going to occur but we can well predict that an earthquake will affect a given location over a certain number of years. The “Gutenberg Richter power-law distribution of earthquake sizes” implies that the largest events are surrounded by a large number of small events, with this statement we collected the data sets of all the EARTHQUAKES of magnitude ranging from small to big since 1900 to 2010 all over the world. After collecting this data we performed clustering techniques to the datasets available with latitude, longitude and time as parameters, which helped to find similarities between them and discovered patterns using non-linear regression functions that helped to forecast earthquakes. This prediction is based on both the historical seismic catalogue and the structural zoning

Investigating transportation research based on social media analysis: A systematic mapping review

    Get PDF
Social media is a pool of users’ thoughts, opinions, surrounding environment, situation and others. This pool can be used as a real-time and feedback data source for many domains such as transportation. It can be used to get instant feedback from commuters; their opinions toward the transportation network and their complaints, in addition to the traffic situation, road conditions, events detection and many others. The problem is in how to utilize social media data to achieve one or more of these targets. A systematic review was conducted in the field of transportation-related research based on social media analysis (TRRSMA) from the years between 2008 and 2018; 74 papers were identified from an initial set of 703 papers extracted from 4 digital libraries. This review will structure the field and give an overview based on the following grounds: activity, keywords, approaches, social media data and platforms and focus of the researches. It will show the trend in the research subjects by countries, in addition to the activity trends, platforms usage trend and others. Further analysis of the most employed approach (Lexicons) and data (text) will be also shown. Finally, challenges and future works are drawn and proposed

In situ Biofilm Quantification in Bioelectrochemical Systems by using Optical Coherence Tomography

Detailed studies of microbial growth in bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) are required for their suitable design and operation. Here, we report the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a tool for in situ and noninvasive quantification of biofilm growth on electrodes (bioanodes). An experimental platform is designed and described in which transparent electrodes are used to allow real‐time, 3D biofilm imaging. The accuracy and precision of the developed method is assessed by relating the OCT results to well‐established standards for biofilm quantification (chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total N content) and show high correspondence to these standards. Biofilm thickness observed by OCT ranged between 3 and 90 μm for experimental durations ranging from 1 to 24 days. This translated to growth yields between 38 and 42 mgurn:x-wiley:18645631:media:cssc201800589:cssc201800589-math-0001  gurn:x-wiley:18645631:media:cssc201800589:cssc201800589-math-0002 −1 at an anode potential of −0.35 V versus Ag/AgCl. Time‐lapse observations of an experimental run performed in duplicate show high reproducibility in obtained microbial growth yield by the developed method. As such, we identify OCT as a powerful tool for conducting in‐depth characterizations of microbial growth dynamics in BESs. Additionally, the presented platform allows concomitant application of this method with various optical and electrochemical techniques

    Chemically Powered Micro‐and Nanomotors

Chemically powered micro- and nanomotors are small devices that are self-propelled by catalytic reactions in fluids. Taking inspiration from biomotors, scientists are aiming to find the best architecture for self-propulsion, understand the mechanisms of motion, and develop accurate control over the motion. Remotely guided nanomotors can transport cargo to desired targets, drill into biomaterials, sense their environment, mix or pump fluids, and clean polluted water. This Review summarizes the major advances in the growing field of catalytic nanomotors, which started ten years ago.Postprint (published version
