Clockwise: a mixed-media file system
This paper presents Clockwise, a mixed-media file system. The primary goal of Clockwise is to provide a storage architecture that supports the storage and retrieval of best-effort and real-time file system data. Clockwise provides an abstraction called a dynamic partition that groups lists of related (large) blocks on one or more disks. Dynamic partitions can grow and shrink in size and reading or writing of dynamic partitions can be scheduled explicitly. Leptonic emission from microquasar jets: from radio to very high-energy gamma-rays
Microquasars are sources of very high-energy gamma-rays and, very probably,
high-energy gamma-ray emitters. We propose a model for a jet that can allow to
give accurate observational predictions for jet emission at different energies

Quo vadis kriminologie The author deals with the diversity in contemporary viewpoints among academics in South Africa regarding the subject matter of criminology. The topic subject stems from the rationalization programmes being instituted at South African universities and it is maintained that the future of contextual disciplines such as criminology will be decided according to their material value. Such value is determined in accordance with the recognition of the discipline in question received within the rank s of established professions. T h e sole beneficiary in the utilization of criminological knowledge is the criminal justice system. Therefore all scientific practice in criminology should be directed towards serving this goal. Ananalys is of the philosophical foundations within the framework of Christian scientific practice proves that the subject matter of criminology is juridically orientated and therefore related to jurisprudence and not to the social sciences - a viewpoint held in certain academic q u a rte r s. The material value of criminology can only materialise within the criminal justice system. Criminology should be practised and taught at the law faculties of universities, enhancing p u re criminology and paving the way towards official recognition by the law profession

Systems thinkers think About systems education under the April 2010 (volcanic ash) clouds of Austria
The fragmented nature of systems education with multiple traditions expressed in very different ways at different institutions with ultimate confusing effects on the community of learners (students, managers, policy makers, etc), led to a group of Systems Thinkers to discuss and create generic curricula for education and learning about systems for the generalist and specialist tracks. An active network of systems educators and stakeholders who can benefit from enhanced systems education in having to deal with complex issues, was also explored. In this presentation some guidelines for designing introductory and advanced courses will be discussed. The Introduction to Systemic Thinking and Practice course is intended as an introductory course for students from all disciplines. The Advanced Systemic Thinking and Practice course is intended as a more advanced course for students who are faced with complex issues that require a trans-disciplinary and integrated approach. The designs contain a set of key systems concepts and frameworks relevant to the appropriate level, along with some indicative tools and methods which will enable students to explore the concepts. The value of a Global Network of Systems Educators will also be discussed and how this network could help to fulfil the needs of managers, policy makers and society in general. An example will be given of how the integration of this network with the UQ-UNESCO/MAB Global Learning Laboratories NET could lead to more people (decision-and policy makers in Governments, managers, businesses, etc.) having the ability to practice systems thinking – all of these contributing to Systems Thinking becoming a more mainstream part of a sustainable society
Leptonic secondary emission in a hadronic microquasar model
Context: It has been proposed that the origin of the very high-energy photons
emitted from high-mass X-ray binaries with jet-like features, so-called
microquasars (MQs), is related to hadronic interactions between relativistic
protons in the jet and cold protons of the stellar wind. Leptonic secondary
emission should be calculated in a complete hadronic model that include the
effects of pairs from charged pion decays inside the jets and the emission from
pairs generated by gamma-ray absorption in the photosphere of the system. Aims:
We aim at predicting the broadband spectrum from a general hadronic microquasar
model, taking into account the emission from secondaries created by charged
pion decay inside the jet. Methods: The particle energy distribution for
secondary leptons injected along the jets is consistently derived taking the
energy losses into account. We also compute the spectral energy distribution
resulting from these leptons is calculated after assuming different values of
the magnetic field inside the jets. The spectrum of the gamma-rays produced by
neutral pion-decay and processed by electromagnetic cascades under the stellar
photon field. Results: We show that the secondary emission can dominate the
spectral energy distribution at low energies (~1 MeV). At high energies, the
production spectrum can be significantly distorted by the effect of
electromagnetic cascades. These effects are phase-dependent, and some

Motivic Serre invariants, ramification, and the analytic Milnor fiber
We show how formal and rigid geometry can be used in the theory of complex
singularities, and in particular in the study of the Milnor fibration and the
motivic zeta function. We introduce the so-called analytic Milnor fiber
associated to the germ of a morphism f from a smooth complex algebraic variety
X to the affine line. This analytic Milnor fiber is a smooth rigid variety over
the field of Laurent series C((t)). Its etale cohomology coincides with the
singular cohomology of the classical topological Milnor fiber of f; the
monodromy transformation is given by the Galois action. Moreover, the points on
the analytic Milnor fiber are closely related to the motivic zeta function of
f, and the arc space of X.
We show how the motivic zeta function can be recovered as some kind of Weil
zeta function of the formal completion of X along the special fiber of f, and
we establish a corresponding Grothendieck trace formula, which relates, in
particular, the rational points on the analytic Milnor fiber over finite
extensions of C((t)), to the Galois action on its etale cohomology.
The general observation is that the arithmetic properties of the analytic
Milnor fiber reflect the structure of the singularity of the germ f.Comment: Some minor errors corrected. The original publication is available at

Fermentation of animal components in strict carnivores: a comparative study with cheetah fecal inoculum
The natural diet of felids contains highly digestible animal tissues but also fractions resistant to small intestinal digestion, which enter the large intestine where they may be fermented by the resident microbial population. Little information exists on the microbial degradability of animal tissues in the large intestine of felids consuming a natural diet. This study aimed to rank animal substrates in their microbial degradability by means of an in vitro study using captive cheetahs fed a strict carnivorous diet as fecal donors. Fresh cheetah fecal samples were collected, pooled, and incubated with various raw animal substrates (chicken cartilage, collagen, glucosamine-chondroitin, glucosamine, rabbit bone, rabbit hair, and rabbit skin; 4 replicates per substrate) for cumulative gas production measurement in a batch culture technique. Negative (cellulose) and positive (casein and fructo-oligosaccharides; FOS) controls were incorporated in the study. Additionally, after 72 h of incubation, short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), including branched-chain fatty acids (BCFA), and ammonia concentrations were determined for each substrate. Glucosamine and glucosamine-chondroitin yielded the greatest OM cumulative gas volume (OMCV) among animal substrates (P < 0.05), whereas total SCFA production was greatest for collagen (P < 0.05). Collagen induced an acetate production comparable to FOS and a markedly high acetate-to-propionate ratio (8.41:1) compared to all other substrates (1.67:1 to 2.97:1)
