Hydrokinetic turbines, an alternative for the transformation of the Agro-Industrial sector
This study focuses on the design optimization of hydrokinetic turbines for the agro-industrial sector, employing the Blade Element Momentum Theory (BEMT) methodology. Through detailed comparison, the NACA 4412 profile was identified as optimal, considering environmental conditions. The project developed a 5-kW turbine suitable for irrigation canals, capable of adapting to water velocities between 1.5 and 3.5 m/s, which ensures a reliable energy supply with an estimated annual production of 11 MWh. Mechanical integrity assessments using aluminum 319 alloy demonstrated safety factors above 1.3 under both static and dynamic conditions, ensuring the turbineâs structural integrity. The design of the turbine, accommodating a flow speed of 2.5 m/s, reflects a commitment to maximize performance in irrigation environments. Furthermore, the study highlights the turbineâs flexibility to seasonal flow variations, ensuring consistent energy generation. The implementation of hydrokinetic turbines represents a significant advancement towards sustainable energy solutions in agriculture, offering a potential reduction in operational costs and optimization of water resource management. Finally, this research underscores the transformative potential of renewable technologies in enhancing the resilience and sustainability of agricultural practices

Effect of particle concentration on the microstructural and macromechanical properties of biocompatible magnetic hydrogels
We analyze the effect of nanoparticle concentration on the physical properties of magnetic hydrogels consisting of polymer networks of the human fibrin biopolymer with embedded magnetic particles, swollen by a water-based solution. We prepared these magnetic hydrogels by polymerization of mixtures consisting mainly of human plasma and magnetic nanoparticles with OH- functionalization. Microscopic observations revealed that magnetic hydrogels presented some cluster-like knots that were connected by several fibrin threads. By contrast, nonmagnetic hydrogels presented a homogeneous net-like structure with only individual connections between pairs of fibers. The rheological analysis demonstrated that the rigidity modulus, as well as the viscoelastic moduli, increased quadratically with nanoparticle content following a square-like function. Furthermore, we found that time for gel point was shorter in the presence of magnetic nanoparticles. Thus, we can conclude that nanoparticles favor the cross-linking process, serving as nucleation sites for the attachment of the fibrin polymer. Attraction between the positive groups of the fibrinogen, from which the fibrin is polymerized, and the negative OH- groups of the magnetic particle surface qualitatively justifies the positive role of the nanoparticles in the enhancement of the mechanical properties of the magnetic hydrogels. Indeed, we developed a theoretical model that semiquantitatively explains the experimental results by assuming the indirect attraction of the fibrinogen through the attached nanoparticles. Due to this attraction the monomers condense into nuclei of the dense phase and by the end of the polymerization process the nuclei (knots) of the dense phase cross-link the fibrin threads, which enhances their mechanical properties. Fixação de fósforo por um latossolo vermelho escuro-orto
This paper deals with an experiment carried out in pots with the aim of studying the fixation of P in a Dark Red Latosol, from the Municipality of Piracicaba, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The main conclusions were as follows: a) about 90% of the fixed P remained soluble in 0,05N H2SO4 solution; b) Fe and Al contributed to increase the quantities of fixed P; c) the pre-treatment of the soil with Ca(H2PO4)2.
Motivational component profiles in university students learning histology: a comparative study between genders and different health science curricula
Background: The students' motivation to learn basic sciences in health science curricula is poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of different components of motivation (intrinsic motivation, self-determination, self-efficacy and extrinsic -career and grade-motivation) on learning human histology in health science curricula and their relationship with the final performance of the students in histology.
Methods: Glynn Science Motivation Questionnaire II was used to compare students' motivation components to learn histology in 367 first-year male and female undergraduate students enrolled in medical, dentistry and pharmacy degree programs.
Results: For intrinsic motivation, career motivation and self-efficacy, the highest values corresponded to medical students, whereas dentistry students showed the highest values for self-determination and grade motivation. Genders differences were found for career motivation in medicine, self-efficacy in dentistry, and intrinsic motivation, self-determination and grade motivation in pharmacy. Career motivation and self-efficacy components correlated with final performance in histology of the students corresponding to the three curricula.
Conclusions: Our results show that the overall motivational profile for learning histology differs among medical, dentistry and pharmacy students. This finding is potentially useful to foster their learning process, because if they are metacognitively aware of their motivation they will be better equipped to self-regulate their science-learning behavior in histology. This information could be useful for instructors and education policy makers to enhance curricula not only on the cognitive component of learning but also to integrate students' levels and types of motivation into the processes of planning, delivery and evaluation of medical education. This research was supported by the Unidad de InnovaciĂłn Docente,

Anti-HIV-1 Activity of a New Scorpion Venom Peptide Derivative Kn2-7
For over 30 years, HIV/AIDS has wreaked havoc in the world. In the absence of an effective vaccine for HIV, development of new anti-HIV agents is urgently needed. We previously identified the antiviral activities of the scorpion-venom-peptide-derived mucroporin-M1 for three RNA viruses (measles viruses, SARS-CoV, and H5N1). In this investigation, a panel of scorpion venom peptides and their derivatives were designed and chosen for assessment of their anti-HIV activities. A new scorpion venom peptide derivative Kn2-7 was identified as the most potent anti-HIV-1 peptide by screening assays with an EC50 value of 2.76 ”g/ml (1.65 ”M) and showed low cytotoxicity to host cells with a selective index (SI) of 13.93. Kn2-7 could inhibit all members of a standard reference panel of HIV-1 subtype B pseudotyped virus (PV) with CCR5-tropic and CXCR4-tropic NL4-3 PV strain. Furthermore, it also inhibited a CXCR4-tropic replication-competent strain of HIV-1 subtype B virus. Binding assay of Kn2-7 to HIV-1 PV by Octet Red system suggested the anti-HIV-1 activity was correlated with a direct interaction between Kn2-7 and HIV-1 envelope. These results demonstrated that peptide Kn2-7 could inhibit HIV-1 by direct interaction with viral particle and may become a promising candidate compound for further development of microbicide against HIV-1
Global overview of the management of acute cholecystitis during the COVID-19 pandemic (CHOLECOVID study)
Background: This study provides a global overview of the management of patients with acute cholecystitis during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: CHOLECOVID is an international, multicentre, observational comparative study of patients admitted to hospital with acute cholecystitis during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data on management were collected for a 2-month study interval coincident with the WHO declaration of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and compared with an equivalent pre-pandemic time interval. Mediation analysis examined the influence of SARS-COV-2 infection on 30-day mortality. Results: This study collected data on 9783 patients with acute cholecystitis admitted to 247 hospitals across the world. The pandemic was associated with reduced availability of surgical workforce and operating facilities globally, a significant shift to worse severity of disease, and increased use of conservative management. There was a reduction (both absolute and proportionate) in the number of patients undergoing cholecystectomy from 3095 patients (56.2 per cent) pre-pandemic to 1998 patients (46.2 per cent) during the pandemic but there was no difference in 30-day all-cause mortality after cholecystectomy comparing the pre-pandemic interval with the pandemic (13 patients (0.4 per cent) pre-pandemic to 13 patients (0.6 per cent) pandemic; P = 0.355). In mediation analysis, an admission with acute cholecystitis during the pandemic was associated with a non-significant increased risk of death (OR 1.29, 95 per cent c.i. 0.93 to 1.79, P = 0.121). Conclusion: CHOLECOVID provides a unique overview of the treatment of patients with cholecystitis across the globe during the first months of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The study highlights the need for system resilience in retention of elective surgical activity. Cholecystectomy was associated with a low risk of mortality and deferral of treatment results in an increase in avoidable morbidity that represents the non-COVID cost of this pandemic
Assessment of insulating kraft paper aged with service-aged insulating mineral oils in accelerated laboratory aging experiments
The vast majority of power transformers have an insulation system consisting of both insulating mineral oil and Kraft paper. The principal oil degradation agents are oxygen and temperature, whereas the main mechanisms of insulating Kraft paper degradation are water and acids (acidic hydrolysis degradation), temperature (pyrolytic degradation), and oxygen (oxidative degradation)336334
