Indication of insensitivity of planetary weathering behavior and habitable zone to surface land fraction
It is likely that unambiguous habitable zone terrestrial planets of unknown
water content will soon be discovered. Water content helps determine surface
land fraction, which influences planetary weathering behavior. This is
important because the silicate weathering feedback determines the width of the
habitable zone in space and time. Here a low-order model of weathering and
climate, useful for gaining qualitative understanding, is developed to examine
climate evolution for planets of various land-ocean fractions. It is pointed
out that, if seafloor weathering does not depend directly on surface
temperature, there can be no weathering-climate feedback on a waterworld. This
would dramatically narrow the habitable zone of a waterworld. Results from our
model indicate that weathering behavior does not depend strongly on land
fraction for partially ocean-covered planets. This is powerful because it
suggests that previous habitable zone theory is robust to changes in land
fraction, as long as there is some land. Finally, a mechanism is proposed for a
waterworld to prevent complete water loss during a moist greenhouse through
rapid weathering of exposed continents. This process is named a "waterworld
self-arrest," and it implies that waterworlds can go through a moist greenhouse
stage and end up as planets like Earth with partial ocean coverage. This work

Increased insolation threshold for runaway greenhouse processes on Earth like planets
Because the solar luminosity increases over geological timescales, Earth
climate is expected to warm, increasing water evaporation which, in turn,
enhances the atmospheric greenhouse effect. Above a certain critical
insolation, this destabilizing greenhouse feedback can "runaway" until all the
oceans are evaporated. Through increases in stratospheric humidity, warming may
also cause oceans to escape to space before the runaway greenhouse occurs. The
critical insolation thresholds for these processes, however, remain uncertain
because they have so far been evaluated with unidimensional models that cannot
account for the dynamical and cloud feedback effects that are key stabilizing
features of Earth's climate. Here we use a 3D global climate model to show that
the threshold for the runaway greenhouse is about 375 W/m, significantly
higher than previously thought. Our model is specifically developed to quantify
the climate response of Earth-like planets to increased insolation in hot and
extremely moist atmospheres. In contrast with previous studies, we find that
clouds have a destabilizing feedback on the long term warming. However,
subsident, unsaturated regions created by the Hadley circulation have a
stabilizing effect that is strong enough to defer the runaway greenhouse limit
to higher insolation than inferred from 1D models. Furthermore, because of
wavelength-dependent radiative effects, the stratosphere remains cold and dry
enough to hamper atmospheric water escape, even at large fluxes. This has
strong implications for Venus early water history and extends the size of the

Turbulent spectrum of the Earth's ozone field
The Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) database is subjected to an
analysis in terms of the Karhunen-Loeve (KL) empirical eigenfunctions. The
concentration variance spectrum is transformed into a wavenumber spectrum, . In terms of wavenumber is shown to be in the
inverse cascade regime, in the enstrophy cascade regime with the
spectral {\it knee} at the wavenumber of barotropic instability.The spectrum is
related to known geophysical phenomena and shown to be consistent with physical
dimensional reasoning for the problem. The appropriate Reynolds number for the

Notions and subnotions in information structure
Three dimensions can be distinguished in a cross-linguistic account of information structure. First, there is the definition of the focus constituent, the part of the linguistic expression which is subject to some focus meaning. Second and third, there are the focus meanings and the array of structural devices that encode them. In a given language, the expression of focus is facilitated as well as constrained by the grammar within which the focus devices operate. The prevalence of focus ambiguity, the structural inability to make focus distinctions, will thus vary across languages, and within a language, across focus meanings

Enhancement and suppression effects resulting from information structuring in sentences
Information structuring through the use of cleft sentences increases the processing efficiency of references to elements within the scope of focus. Furthermore, there is evidence that putting certain types of emphasis on individual words not only enhances their subsequent processing, but also protects these words from becoming suppressed in the wake of subsequent information, suggesting mechanisms of enhancement and suppression. In Experiment 1, we showed that clefted constructions facilitate the integration of subsequent sentences that make reference to elements within the scope of focus, and that they decrease the efficiency with reference to elements outside of the scope of focus. In Experiment 2, using an auditory text-change-detection paradigm, we showed that focus has similar effects on the strength of memory representations. These results add to the evidence for enhancement and suppression as mechanisms of sentence processing and clarify that the effects occur within sentences having a marked focus structure
Comparing phoneme frequency, age of acquisition, and loss in aphasia:Implications for phonological universals
Phonological complexity may be central to the nature of human language. It may shape the distribution of phonemes and phoneme sequences within languages, but also determine age of acquisition and susceptibility to loss in aphasia. We evaluated this claim using frequency statistics derived from a corpus of phonologically transcribed Italian words (phonitalia, available at phonitalia,org), rankings of phoneme age of acquisition (AoA) and rate of phoneme errors in patients with apraxia of speech (AoS) as an indication of articulatory complexity. These measures were related to cross-linguistically derived markedness rankings. We found strong correspondences. AoA, however, was predicted by both apraxic errors and frequency, suggesting independent contributions of these variables. Our results support the reality of universal principles of complexity. In addition they suggest that these complexity principles have articulatory underpinnings since they modulate the production of patients with AoS, but not the production of patients with more central phonological difficulties
Conversation acts in task-oriented spoken dialogue
A linguistic form\u27s compositional, timeless meaning can be surrounded or even contradicted by various social, aesthetic, or analogistic companion meanings. This paper addresses a series of problems in the structure of spoken language discourse, including turn-taking and grounding. It views these processes as composed of fine-grained actions, which resemble speech acts both in resulting from a computational mechanism of planning and in having a rich relationship to the specific linguistic features which serve to indicate their presence. The resulting notion of Conversation Acts is more general than speech act theory, encompassing not only the traditional speech acts but turn-taking, grounding, and higher-level argumentation acts as well. Furthermore, the traditional speech acts in this scheme become fully joint actions, whose successful performance requires full listener participation. This paper presents a detailed analysis of spoken language dialogue. It shows the role of each class of conversation acts in discourse structure, and discusses how members of each class can be recognized in conversation. Conversation acts, it will be seen, better account for the success of conversation than speech act theory alone

Preface: The U.S.-Australia Cooperative Rangeland Science Program In October 1968 the governments of the United States and Australia entered into an agreement for the purpose of facilitating close cooperative activities between the scientific communities of the two countries. The joint communique issued at that time designated the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Australian Commonwealth Department of Education and Science as the coordinating agencies. Both countries were to encourage binational teamwork in research, interchanges of scientists, joint seminars, and exchanges of information.
