    Environmental Effects of Processing Marine Clay in Olotu, Ondo State, Nigeria

    In this work, analysis of the released gas from calcined marine clay and lime shell was investigated. Study of the emitted gas/air from the calcined clay and shell showed that average concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2: 20.09PPM and 8.12PPM) are below the maximum standard natural concentration 600PPM of carbon dioxide in fresh air and the recommended World Health Organization Threshold Limit Value (TLV) of 500PPM. Average carbon monoxide (CO) concentration (0.004PPM, 0.010PPM) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentration (0.002PPM are below the Nigeria Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) and World Health Organization (WHO) maximum limit of 10PPM-20PPM (for carbon monoxide) and 0.01PPM- 0.5PPM (for sulfur dioxide) for an 8-hourly time. It was established that the average concentration of C0, C02, and S02 is so low and so pose no threat to the environment based on the review of the existing regulation, standards and codes (WHO and NAAQSO).     On the background in the γpω(π0γ)p\gamma p \to \omega(\pi^0\gamma) p reaction and mixed event simulation

    In this paper we evaluate sources of background for the γpωp\gamma p \to \omega p, with the ω\omega detected through its π0γ\pi^0 \gamma decay channel, to compare with the experiment carried out at ELSA. We find background from γpπ0π0p\gamma p \to \pi^0 \pi^0 p followed by decay of a π0\pi^0 into two γ\gamma, recombining one π0\pi^0 and one γ\gamma, and from the γpπ0ηp\gamma p \to \pi^0 \eta p reaction with subsequent decay of the η\eta into two photons. This background accounts for the data at π0γ\pi^0 \gamma invariant masses beyond 700 MeV, but strength is missing at lower invariant masses which was attributed to photon misidentification events, which we simulate to get a good reproduction of the experimental background. Once this is done, we perform an event mixing simulation to reproduce the calculated background and we find that the method provides a good description of the background at low π0γ\pi^0 \gamma invariant masses but fakes the background at high invariant masses, making background events at low invariant masses, which are due to γ\gamma misidentification events, responsible for the background at high invariant masses which is due to the γpπ0π0p\gamma p \to \pi^0 \pi^0 p and γpπ0ηp\gamma p \to \pi^0 \eta p reactions.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

    Chiral SU(3) Dynamics with Coupled Channels: Inclusion of P-Wave Multipoles

    We extend our recent non-perturbative chiral SU(3) coupled channel approach to pion- and photon-induced η\eta- and KK-meson production off protons by including all strong and electromagnetic p-wave multipoles. We identify the p-wave amplitudes of the next-to-leading order SU(3) chiral meson-baryon Lagrangian with a coupled channel potential which is iterated to infinite orders in a separable Lippmann-Schwinger equation. Our approach to η\eta- and KK-photoproduction introduces no additional free parameters. By adjusting a few finite range parameters and the unknown parameters in the Lagrangian, we are able to simultaneously describe a very large amount of low-energy data. These include the total and differential cross sections of the π\pi-induced reactions πpηn,K0Λ,K0Σ0,K+Σ\pi^- p \to \eta n, K^0 \Lambda, K^0 \Sigma^0, K^+ \Sigma^- and π+pK+Σ+\pi^+ p \to K^+ \Sigma^+ as well as those of photoproduction γpηp,K+Λ,K+Σ0,K0Σ+\gamma p \to \eta p, K^+\Lambda, K^+ \Sigma^0, K^0 \Sigma^+. The polarization observables measured in η\eta- and KK-photoproduction are particularly sensitive to interference terms between the s- and p-wave multipoles. The total cross section data are remarkably well reproduced in all channels. There remain, however, some open questions concerning details of angular distributions and polarization observables.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Nucl. Phys.

    Masses, widths and photocouplings of baryon resonances are determined in a coupled-channel partial wave analysis of a large variety of data. The Bonn-Gatchina partial wave formalism is extended to include a decomposition of t- and u-exchange amplitudes into individual partial waves. The multipole transition amplitudes for γppπ0\gamma p\to p\pi^0 and γpnπ+\gamma p\to n\pi^+ are given and compared to results from other analyses.Comment: 18 pages, 14 figure

    Differential and total cross-sections for photoproduction of gamma proton to proton pi0 omega and gamma proton to Delta+ omega were determined from measurements of the CB-ELSA experiment, performed at the electron accelerator ELSA in Bonn.     Differential cross section measurement of eta photoproduction on the proton from threshold to 1100 MeV

    The differential cross section for the reaction p(gamma, eta p) has been measured from threshold to 1100 MeV photon laboratory energy. For the first time, the region of the S11(1535) resonance is fully covered in a photoproduction experiment and allows a precise extraction of its parameters at the photon point. Above 1000 MeV, S-wave dominance vanishes while a P-wave contribution is observed whose nature will have to be clarified. These high precision data together with the already measured beam asymmetry data will provide stringent constraints on the extraction of new couplings of baryon resonances to the eta meson.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys.     Analysis of resonance multipoles from polarization observables in eta photoproduction

    A combined analysis of new eta photoproduction data for total and differential cross sections, target asymmetry and photon asymmetry is presented. Using a few reasonable assumptions we perform the first model-independent analysis of the E0+, E2- and M2- eta photoproduction multipoles. Making use of the well-known A3/2 helicity amplitude of the D13(1520) state we extract its branching ratio to the eta-N channel, Gamma(eta,N)/Gamma = (0.08 +- 0.01)%. At higher energies, we show that the photon asymmetry is extremely sensitive to small multipoles that are excited by photons in the helicity 3/2 state. The new GRAAL photon asymmetry data at higher energy show a clear signal of the F15(1680) excitation which permits extracting an F15(1680)->eta,N branching ratio of (0.15 +0.35 -0.10)%.Comment: 14 pages of LATEX including 7 postscript figure

    The cross section asymmetry Sigma has been measured for the photoproduction of pi0-mesons off protons, using polarized photons in the energy range Eg = 0.5 - 1.1 GeV. The CM angular coverage is Theta = 85 - 125 deg with energy and angle steps of 25 MeV and 5 deg, respectively. The obtained Sigma data, which cover the second and third resonance regions, are compared with existing experimental data and recent phenomenological analyses. The influence of these measurements on such analyses is also considered

    Quasi-free photoproduction of η-mesons off 3He nuclei

    Quasi-free photoproduction of η-mesons has been measured off nucleons bound in 3He nuclei for incident photon energies from the threshold region up to 1.4 GeV. The experiment was performed at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with an almost 4π covering electromagnetic calorimeter, combining the TAPS and Crystal Ball detectors. The η-mesons were detected in coincidence with the recoil nucleons. This allowed a comparison of the production cross section off quasi-free protons and quasi-free neutrons and a full kinematic reconstruction of the final state, eliminating effects from nuclear Fermi motion. In the S11(1535) resonance peak, the data agree with the neutron/proton cross section ratio extracted from measurements with deuteron targets. More importantly, the prominent structure observed in photoproduction off quasi-free neutrons bound in the deuteron is also clearly observed. Its parameters (width, strength) are consistent with the expectations from the deuteron results. On an absolute scale the cross sections for both quasi-free protons and neutrons are suppressed with respect to the deuteron target pointing to significant nuclear final-state interaction effects

    Photoproduction of mesons off nuclei

    Recent results for the photoproduction of mesons off nuclei are reviewed. These experiments have been performed for two major lines of research related to the properties of the strong interaction. The investigation of nucleon resonances requires light nuclei as targets for the extraction of the isospin composition of the electromagnetic excitations. This is done with quasi-free meson photoproduction off the bound neutron and supplemented with the measurement of coherent photoproduction reactions, serving as spin and/or isospin filters. Furthermore, photoproduction from light and heavy nuclei is a very efficient tool for the study of the interactions of mesons with nuclear matter and the in-medium properties of hadrons. Experiments are currently rapidly developing due to the combination of high quality tagged (and polarized) photon beams with state-of-the-art 4pi detectors and polarized targets
