The influence of magnetic field geometry on magnetars X-ray spectra
Nowadays, the analysis of the X-ray spectra of magnetically powered neutron
stars or magnetars is one of the most valuable tools to gain insight into the
physical processes occurring in their interiors and magnetospheres. In
particular, the magnetospheric plasma leaves a strong imprint on the observed
X-ray spectrum by means of Compton up-scattering of the thermal radiation
coming from the star surface. Motivated by the increased quality of the
observational data, much theoretical work has been devoted to develop Monte
Carlo (MC) codes that incorporate the effects of resonant Compton scattering in
the modeling of radiative transfer of photons through the magnetosphere. The
two key ingredients in this simulations are the kinetic plasma properties and
the magnetic field (MF) configuration. The MF geometry is expected to be
complex, but up to now only mathematically simple solutions (self-similar
solutions) have been employed. In this work, we discuss the effects of new,
more realistic, MF geometries on synthetic spectra. We use new force-free
solutions in a previously developed MC code to assess the influence of MF
geometry on the emerging spectra. Our main result is that the shape of the
final spectrum is mostly sensitive to uncertain parameters of the
magnetospheric plasma, but the MF geometry plays an important role on the
angle-dependence of the spectra.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures To appear in Proceedings of II Iberian Nuclear

Ediacaran Obduction of a Fore-Arc Ophiolite in SW Iberia: A Turning Point in the Evolving Geodynamic Setting of Peri- Gondwana
The Calzadilla Ophiolite is an ensemble of mafic and ultramafic rocks that represents the
transition between lower crust and upper mantle of a Cadomian (peri-Gondwanan) fore arc. Mapping and
structural analysis of the ophiolite demonstrates that it was obducted in latest Ediacaran times, because the
Ediacaran-Early Cambrian sedimentary series (Malcocinado Formation) discordantly covers it. The ophiolite
and emplacement-related structures are affected by Variscan deformation (Devonian-Carboniferous),
which includes SW verging overturned folds (D1) and thrusts (D2), upright folds (D3), extensional faults (D4),
and later faults (D5). These phases of deformation are explained in the context of Variscan tectonics as the
result of the progressive collision between Gondwana and Laurussia. Qualitative unstraining of Variscan
deformation reveals the primary geometry of Ediacaran-Cambrian structures and uncovers the generation of
east verging thrusts as responsible for the primary obduction of the Calzadilla Ophiolite. Restoration of
planar and linear structures associated with this event indicates an Ediacaran, east directed obduction of the
ophiolite, that is, emplacement of the Cadomian fore arc onto inner sections of the northern margin of
Gondwana. According to regional data, the obduction separates two extension-dominated stages in the
tectonic evolution of the African margin of northern Gondwana preserved in southern Europe. Preobduction
extension brought about the onset and widening of fore-arc and back-arc basins in the external part
of the continent, while postobduction extension facilitated the formation of extensional migmatitic domes,
an oceanward migration of back-arc spreading centers across peri-Gondwana, and the eventual opening
of a major basin such as the Rheic Ocean
Distorted Heisenberg Algebra and Coherent States for Isospectral Oscillator Hamiltonians
The dynamical algebra associated to a family of isospectral oscillator
Hamiltonians is studied through the analysis of its representation in the basis
of energy eigenstates. It is shown that this representation becomes similar to
that of the standard Heisenberg algebra, and it is dependent of a parameter
. We name it {\it distorted Heisenberg algebra}, where is the
distortion parameter. The corresponding coherent states for an arbitrary
are derived, and some particular examples are discussed in full detail. A
prescription to produce the squeezing, by adequately selecting the initial
state of the system, is given.Comment: 21 pages, Latex, 3 figures available as hard copies upon request from

Performance of a centrifugal pump running in inverse mode
This paper presents the functional characterization of a centrifugal pump used as a turbine. It shows the characteristics of the machine involved at several rotational speeds, comparing the respective flows and heads. In this way, it is possible to observe the influence of the rotational speed on efficiency, as well as obtaining the characteristics at constant head and runaway speed. Also, the forces actuating on the impeller were studied. An uncertainty analysis was made to assess the accuracy of the results. The research results indicate that the turbine characteristics can be predicted to some extent from the pump characteristics, that water flows out of the runner free of swirl flow at the best efficiency point, and that radial stresses are lower than in pump mode
Controlled complete suppression of single-atom inelastic spin and orbital cotunnelling
The inelastic portion of the tunnel current through an individual magnetic
atom grants unique access to read out and change the atom's spin state, but it
also provides a path for spontaneous relaxation and decoherence. Controlled
closure of the inelastic channel would allow for the latter to be switched off
at will, paving the way to coherent spin manipulation in single atoms. Here we
demonstrate complete closure of the inelastic channels for both spin and
orbital transitions due to a controlled geometric modification of the atom's
environment, using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). The observed
suppression of the excitation signal, which occurs for Co atoms assembled into
chain on a CuN substrate, indicates a structural transition affecting the
d orbital, effectively cutting off the STM tip from the spin-flip
cotunnelling path.Comment: 4 figures plus 4 supplementary figure
Some results on the eigenfunctions of the quantum trigonometric Calogero-Sutherland model related to the Lie algebra E6
The quantum trigonometric Calogero-Sutherland models related to Lie algebras
admit a parametrization in which the dynamical variables are the characters of
the fundamental representations of the algebra. We develop here this approach
for the case of the exceptional Lie algebra E6.Comment: 17 pages, no figure
The Site-Diluted Ising Model in Four Dimension
In the literature, there are five distinct, fragmented sets of analytic
predictions for the scaling behaviour at the phase transition in the
random-site Ising model in four dimensions. Here, the scaling relations for
logarithmic corrections are used to complete the scaling pictures for each set.
A numerical approach is then used to confirm the leading scaling picture coming
from these predictions and to discriminate between them at the level of
logarithmic corrections.Comment: 15 pages, 5 ps figures. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Lubrication of DLC Coatings with Two Tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate Anion-Based Ionic Liquids
The lubrication of a Cr-DLC coating with ethyl-dimethyl-2-methoxyethylammonium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluoropho-sphate [(NEMM)MOE][FAP] and 1-butyl-1-methylpyrro-lidinium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate [BMP] [FAP] ionic liquids (ILs) as 1 wt% additives to a polyalphaolefin (PAO 6) was studied. Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) was also used as reference in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the ILs. Reciprocating ball-on-plate tribological tests at loads of 20 and 40 N were performed. The results showed that both ILs exhibited a friction reduction, especially at the lowest load tested. Antiwear properties were also improved; the PAO 6 + 1% [BMP][FAP] mixture was slightly better, close to the values for PAO 6 + 1% ZDDP. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that the additive–surface interaction was responsible for the tribological improvement
