    ISCTE-IUL 1that is a public university established in 1972 pursuing teaching, research and community service activities. With more than 9000 students enrolled in undergraduate (46%) and postgraduate (54%) programs, 450 teachers and 240 non-teaching staff, the University is proud to be one of the most dynamic and innovative universities in the country producing, transmitting and transferring knowledge to society according with the highest international standards.     Differential contribution of PB1-F2 to the virulence of highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza A virus in mammalian and avian species

    Highly pathogenic avian influenza A viruses (HPAIV) of the H5N1 subtype occasionally transmit from birds to humans and can cause severe systemic infections in both hosts. PB1-F2 is an alternative translation product of the viral PB1 segment that was initially characterized as a pro-apoptotic mitochondrial viral pathogenicity factor. A full-length PB1-F2 has been present in all human influenza pandemic virus isolates of the 20(th) century, but appears to be lost evolutionarily over time as the new virus establishes itself and circulates in the human host. In contrast, the open reading frame (ORF) for PB1-F2 is exceptionally well-conserved in avian influenza virus isolates. Here we perform a comparative study to show for the first time that PB1-F2 is a pathogenicity determinant for HPAIV (A/Viet Nam/1203/2004, VN1203 (H5N1)) in both mammals and birds. In a mammalian host, the rare N66S polymorphism in PB1-F2 that was previously described to be associated with high lethality of the 1918 influenza A virus showed increased replication and virulence of a recombinant VN1203 H5N1 virus, while deletion of the entire PB1-F2 ORF had negligible effects. Interestingly, the N66S substituted virus efficiently invades the CNS and replicates in the brain of Mx+/+ mice. In ducks deletion of PB1-F2 clearly resulted in delayed onset of clinical symptoms and systemic spreading of virus, while variations at position 66 played only a minor role in pathogenesis. These data implicate PB1-F2 as an important pathogenicity factor in ducks independent of sequence variations at position 66. Our data could explain why PB1-F2 is conserved in avian influenza virus isolates and only impacts pathogenicity in mammals when containing certain amino acid motifs such as the rare N66S polymorphism

    Chiral smectic liquid crystal cells showing V-shaped electrooptical switching have been reported as one of the most promising technologies for high-end display applications. In this work, time-resolved electrical behaviour of these devices has been obtained through a set of systematic measurements. The electrical equivalent circuit has been derived, a number of simulations at different frequencies have been performed using commercial software for analogue circuits. Performance of this electrical model to account for time domain variations of switching currents in chiral smectic LC displays with V/W-shaped electrooptical response has been analyzed as well

    Microwave foaming of sodium silicate-ortodibasic calcium phosphate mixtures

    [ES] La acción de la energía de las microondas, genera porosidad interna en un material cerámico húmedo. En el presente trabajo, se analiza el efecto del tiempo de aplicación de las microondas sobre el comportamiento térmico, cambio de volumen, tamaño y distribución de poros, reacciones químicas y disolución de probetas cerámicas de silicato de sodio / ortofosfato cálcico dibásico (FCD). Para caracterizar las espumas cerámicas, se utilizó, análisis de imágenes, microscopía electrónica de barrido, difracción de rayos X y picnometría de helio. Se obtuvieron espumas cerámicas con una porosidad de 71 a 79 % y un rango de tamaño de poro de 10 a 200 μm. Después de 90 segundos, las probetas alcanzaron una temperatura de aproximadamente 130°C y una pérdida de peso de 23% con respecto al peso total de la muestra. Se observaron cambios de volumen y de los compuestos químicos en las muestras espumadas cuando se varió la proporción del FCD en la mezcla. Para contenidos de 10, 20 y 30% en peso de FCD, el incremento de volumen se redujo a 350, 300 y 250% respectivamente. En muestras con 30% de FCD calentadas por microondas durante 90 segundos la cantidad de un nuevo compuesto en la espuma, constituido por β-NaCaPO4, fue del orden de 42.9%. En esa misma muestra, el 57.1 % restante fue FCD. Considerando pruebas de disolución de un gramo de muestra en 100 ml de agua destilada, la disolución obtenida en muestras espumadas por microondas después de 20 días fue de 900 ppm/gr para el Na y de 2.7 ppm/gr para el Ca en muestras con 10% de FCD. En muestras con 30% de FCD la disolución de Na fue de 470 ppm/gr y del Ca de 5 ppm/gr.[EN] The effect of microwave application on the thermal behaviour, volume change, size and pore size distribution as well as chemical reactions and dissolution of sodium silicate/dibasic calcium phosphate ceramic (DCF) samples have been analysed. Ceramics foams with porosities between 71 and 79 wt% and pore sizes ranging from 10 to 200 microns have been obtained. After 90 seconds the temperature of samples reach about 130 °C with a weight loss of 23 wt%. Differences in the proportion of DCF in the initial mixture originate changes in volume and different chemical compounds in the final obtained foams. Additions of 10, 20 and 30 wt% of DCF originates volume increases of 350, 300 and 250 % respectively. In foam samples with 30 wt% of DCF, heated by microwave during 90 sec., the amount of the new compound β-NaCaPO4 was about 42.9 wt%. The other component of this sample, 57.1 wt%, was DCF. Dissolution tests were made, using one gram of sample, in 100 ml of distilled water. The dissolution of 10 wt% DCF foamed samples, after 20 days into water, were 900 ppm/gr of Na and 2.7 ppm/gr of Ca. In samples with 30 wt% of DCF the dissolution were 470 ppm/gr and 5 ppm/gr for Na and Ca respectively.Peer reviewe

    Para el diagnóstico de diversas patologías odontológicas, la exploración de tejidos blandos y duros debe ser rigurosa. En muchas ocasiones, además de las técnicas de inspección, palpación, percusión y auscultación podemos servirnos de métodos complementarios como sondaje, aspiración, citología, biopsia, cultivos y para el diagnóstico por imagen nos valdremos de la radiología simple y de contraste. Actualmente podemos disponer de un nuevo método llamado Visiorradiología, que nos proporciona una serie de ventajas frente a la radiología convencional. En este trabajo se presenta un estudio comparativo entre la radiología simple y la visiorradiología en base al estudio de diversas piezas dentales, concluyéndose con los mejores resultados y posibilidades de la segunda con respecto a la primera en cuanto a rapidez, tratamiento de imágenes así como la posibilidad de almacenamiento en soporte magnético y control visual mediante impresora para el dueño de los animales.To diagnose some odontologic pathologies, the soft and tough tissues exploration must be strict. Sometimes, we can use complementary methods like sounding, aspiration, citology, biopsy, cultures and image diagnosis using ordinary and contrast radiology; in addition to the following techniques: examination, palpation, percution and auscultation. Actually we can have available a new method provide us advantages against the conventional radiology. In this study we present a comparative study between the simple radiology and the visiorradiology according to some tooth studies. We demonstrate that visiorradiology is beíter for the speed, images quality as well as the storing possibility . in magnetic supports and visual control trough the printer for the owner

    Alrededor de un 15% de la población está afectada en cierto grado por una discapacidad. En la sociedad del bienestar y a las puertas de un nuevo milenio, existe una indudable preocupación por proporcionar a estas personas con discapacidad acceso a servicios similares, y a un mismo grado de independencia que sus conciudadanos. En este sentido, la Tecnología de la Rehabilitación será la encargada de ofrecerles soluciones, productos y servicios que les permitan equipararse con el resto de la sociedad y acceder de forma igualitaria a las mismas tareas, actividades y puestos de trabajo. El soporte tecnológico sobre el que se basarán los citados productos o servicios puede ser variado, aunque disciplinas tradicionales como la electrónica y la fotónica seguirán jugando un papel preponderante.Publicad

    Use of an experimental model to evaluate infection resistance of meshes in abdominal wall surgery

    Background: Staphylococcal species are the most common organisms causing prosthetic mesh infections, however, infections due to rapidly growing mycobacteria are increasing. This study evaluates the resistance of biomaterial for abdominal wall prostheses against the development of postoperative infection in a rat model. Material and methods: In 75 rats, we intramuscularly implanted three different types of prostheses: (1) low-density polypropylene monofilament mesh (PMM), (2) high-density PMM, and (3) a composite prosthesis composed of low-density PMM and a nonporous hydrophilic film. Meshes were inoculated with a suspension containing 108 colony-forming units of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Mycobacterium fortuitum, or Mycobacterium abscessus before wound closure. Animals were sacrificed on the eighth day postoperatively for clinical evaluation, and the implants were removed for bacteriologic analyses. Results: Prostheses infected with S aureus showed a higher bacterial viability, worse integration, and clinical outcome compared with infection by other bacteria. Composite prostheses showed a higher number of viable colonies of both M fortuitum and Staphylococcus spp., with poorer integration in host tissue. However, when the composite prosthesis was infected with M abscessus, a lower number of viable bacteria were isolated and a better integration was observed compared with infection by other bacteria. Conclusions: Considering M abscessus, a smaller collagen-free contact surface shows better resistance to infection, however, depending on the type of bacteria, prostheses with a large surface, and covered with collagen shows reduced resistance to infection, worse integration, and worse clinical outcome.     Changes in western Mediterranean thermohaline circulation in association with a deglacial Organic Rich Layer formation in the Alboran Sea

Benthic foraminiferal assemblages and the shallow infaunal foraminifer Uvigerina peregrina δ13C record support the establishment of sustained high organic matter fluxes, and thus eutrophic conditions at the sea floor, during the late phase of the ORL (Younger Dryas to early Holocene periods). Since organic matter fluxes were lower (mesotrophic conditions) during the Bølling-Allerød period, they cannot be solely responsible for the ORL initiation. Geochemical, sedimentological and micropalaeontological proxies support a major weakening of the deep-water convection in the Gulf of Lion as the main driver for the development of poorly-ventilated conditions from intermediate depths (946 m) to the deep western Mediterranean basin that promoted the beginning of the ORL deposition. Nevertheless, a better ventilation at intermediate depths was established during the late ORL, while the deep basin remained poorly ventilated. We propose that our data reflect the arrival of a new better-ventilated intermediate water mass analogue to the current Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW) and/or a new intermediate water mass from the Gulf of Lion.
