    WHY DO FARMERS FORWARD CONTRACT IN FACTOR MARKETS?

    This study investigated farmers' incentives to forward purchase inputs. A model of farmer decision making was used to derive an optimal forward contracting rule. Explicit in the model was the tradeoff between the quantity of input to be purchased in advance, and the remaining portion to be purchased later on the spot market. Results indicated that the primary reasons farmers contract inputs are to reduce risk and to speculate on favorable price moves. A numerical example of fertilizer used in corn production indicated that the size of the price discount was the dominant factor in forward contracting decisions.Farm Management,

    Needs and demands for public services are increasing in South Dakota. More services are being provided. These trends are nationwide and are likely to continue. The present problems of financing education and highways highlight this situation. South Dakota citizens are users of these services and are being called on to pay the increased costs of public services. Farmers as users of the public services want for their families the benefits of such items as education and improved roads. Thus, they as property owners and as buyers of taxable items have a real concern with the increasing tax burdens, especially at a time when farm income is declining. To better understand the tax situation as it affects farmers, it is helpful to consider the over-all public finance situation. Therefore, general information on public expenditures and receipts is given first. Then the effects on farmers are considered. The purpose of this publication is to provide information that will help citizens and officials to make decisions on tax policy. It is not intended to promote or discourage any particular policy or tax except as the factual material presented may reflect on its feasibility or equity and adequacy.     Enhancing the work of the Islington Integrated Gangs Team: A pilot study on the response to serious youth violence in Islington

    This report is the result of research conducted by the Centre for City Criminology at City, University of London, in partnership with Islington’s Integrated Gangs Team (IGT) and the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS). The research was co-funded by MPS and the School of Arts and Social Sciences, City, University of London. Following a collaborative research event in October 2017, City Criminologists were commissioned to carry out a small-scale research project to capture the work of the IGT and to make recommendations regarding its operations, coherence, effectiveness and sustainability. The research team conducted semi-structured interviews over several months with 23 practitioners across the services that constitute the IGT. This report presents the findings and recommendations

    Effects of long-term organophosphate exposures on neurological symptoms, vibration sense and tremor amongst South African farm workers

    OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the relationship between long-term exposure to organophosphate insecticides and neurological symptoms, vibration sense, and motor tremor after control for the effect of past poisoning and acute exposure. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 164 pesticide applicators and 83 nonspraying reference workers on deciduous fruit farms. The workers were tested on the Vibratron II, on tests of dynamic and static tremor, and for a set of neurological and "dummy" symptoms. Exposure was derived with the use of a job-exposure matrix for pesticides in agriculture. RESULTS: Compared with nonapplicators, current applicators reported significantly more dizziness, sleepiness, and headache and had a higher overall neurological symptom score. This association remained statistically significant after multiple logistic regression analyses controlling for a range of confounders and effect modifiers [odds ratio (OR) 2.25, for current applicators having high neurological score, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.15-4.39]. The average lifetime intensity of organophosphate exposure was nonsignificantly associated with both neurological (OR 1.98, 95% CI 0.49-7.94) and "dummy" symptoms (OR 2.37, 95% CI 0.54-10.35). Previous pesticide poisoning was significantly associated with the neurological scores (OR 4.08, 95% CI 1.48-11.22) but not with the "dummy" symptoms. Vibration sense outcomes were associated with age and height, but not with the organophosphate exposure measures. In the multiple linear regression modeling for tremor intensity in the dominant hand, recent organophosphate exposure in the past 10 days was a significant predictor (partial correlation coefficient = 0.04), but none of the long-term organophosphate exposure measures were significant. CONCLUSIONS: Strong evidence was found for an association between symptom outcomes and past organophosphate poisoning and between symptom outcomes and current spray activity. In contrast to symptoms, there was no association between either past poisoning or current spray activity and vibration sense or tremor outcome.     Proton relays are known to increase reaction rates for H2 evolution and lower overpotentials in electrocatalytic reactions. In this report we describe two electrocatalysts, [Fe4N(CO)11(PPh3)]- (1-) which has no proton relay, and hydroxyl-containing [Fe4N(CO)11(Ph2P(CH2)2OH)]- (2-). Solid state structures indicate that these phosphine-substituted clusters are direct analogs of [Fe4N(CO)12]- where one CO ligand has been replaced by a phosphine. We show that the proton relay changes the selectivity of reactions: CO2 is reduced selectively to formate by 1- in the absence of a relay, and protons are reduced to H2 under a CO2 atmosphere by 2-. These results implicate a hydride intermediate in the mechanism of the reactions and demonstrate the importance of controlling proton delivery to control product selectivity. Thermochemical measurements performed using infrared spectroelectrochemistry provided pKa and hydricity values for [HFe4N(CO)11(PPh3)]-, which are 23.7, and 45.5 kcal mol-1, respectively. The pKa of the hydroxyl group in 2- was determined to fall between 29 and 41, and this suggests that the proximity of the proton relay to the active catalytic site plays a significant role in the product selectivity observed, since the acidity alone does not account for the observed results. More generally, this work emphasizes the importance of substrate delivery kinetics in determining the selectivity of CO2 reduction reactions that proceed through metal-hydride intermediates

    Radiative Transfer in Prestellar Cores: A Monte Carlo Approach

    We use our Monte Carlo radiative transfer code to study non-embedded prestellar cores and cores that are embedded at the centre of a molecular cloud. Our study indicates that the temperature inside embedded cores is lower than in isolated non-embedded cores, and generally less than 12 K, even when the cores are surrounded by an ambient cloud of small visual extinction (Av~5). Our study shows that the best wavelength region to observe embedded cores is between 400 and 500 microns, where the core is quite distinct from the background. We also predict that very sensitive observations (~1-3 MJy/sr) at 170-200 microns can be used to estimate how deeply a core is embedded in its parent molecular cloud.     Observations have been carried out with SCUBA at the JCMT of 52 molecular cloud cores that do not contain any sign of protostellar activity. These are all therefore candidate prestellar cores, which are believed to represent the stage of star formation that precedes the formation of a protostar. 29 of the 52 cores were detected at 850 microns at varying levels of signal-to-noise ratio greater than 3 sigma at peak. The detected cores were split into 'bright' cores and `intermediate' cores, depending on their peak flux density at 850 microns. Cores with peak 850 microns flux densities greater than 170 mJy/beam were designated 'bright' (13 cores), while those flux densities below this value were designated 'intermediate' (16 cores). This dividing line corresponds to A_v~50 under typical assumptions. The data are combined with our previously published ISO data, and the physical parameters of the cores, such as density and temperature, are calculated. Detailed fitting of the bright core radial profiles shows that they are not critical Bonnor-Ebert spheres, in agreement with previous findings. However, we find that intermediate cores, such as B68 (which has previously been claimed to be a Bonnor-Ebert sphere), may in fact be consistent with the Bonnor-Ebert criterion, suggesting perhaps that cores pass through such a phase during their evolution. We make rough estimates of core lifetimes based on the statistics of detections and find that the lifetime of a prestellar core is roughly ~3x10^5 years, while that of a bright core is \~1.5x10^5 years. Comparisons with some magnetic and turbulence regulated collapse models show that no model can match all of the data.     Improved Approximate String Matching and Regular Expression Matching on Ziv-Lempel Compressed Texts

    We study the approximate string matching and regular expression matching problem for the case when the text to be searched is compressed with the Ziv-Lempel adaptive dictionary compression schemes. We present a time-space trade-off that leads to algorithms improving the previously known complexities for both problems. In particular, we significantly improve the space bounds, which in practical applications are likely to be a bottleneck

    Does Infall End Before the Class I Stage?

    We have observed HCO+ J=3-2 toward 16 Class I sources and 18 Class 0 sources, many of which were selected from Mardones et al. (1997). Eight sources have profiles significantly skewed to the blue relative to optically thin lines. We suggest six sources as new infall candidates. We find an equal "blue excess" among Class 0 and Class I sources after combining this sample with that of Gregersen et al. (1997). We used a Monte Carlo code to simulate the temporal evolution of line profiles of optically thick lines of HCO+, CS and H2CO in a collapsing cloud and found that HCO+ had the strongest asymmetry at late times.     Limits on Radio Continuum Emission from a Sample of Candidate Contracting Starless Cores

    We used the NRAO Very Large Array to search for 3.6 cm continuum emission from embedded protostars in a sample of 8 nearby ``starless'' cores that show spectroscopic evidence for infalling motions in molecular emission lines. We detect a total of 13 compact sources in the eight observed fields to 5 sigma limiting flux levels of typically 0.09 mJy. None of these sources lie within 1' of the central positions of the cores, and they are all likely background objects. Based on an extrapolation of the empirical correlation between the bolometric luminosity and 3.6 cm luminosity for the youngest protostars, these null-detections place upper limits of ~0.1 L_sun (d/140pc)^2 on the luminosities of protostellar sources embedded within these cores. These limits, together with the extended nature of the inward motions inferred from molecular line mapping (Lee et al. 2001), are inconsistent with the inside-out collapse model of singular isothermal spheres and suggest a less centrally condensed phase of core evolution during the earliest stages of star formation.Comment: Accepted to the Astronomical Journal; 12 pages, 1 figur
