    Roman seals associated with collyria (Latin expression for eye drops /washes and lotions for eye maintenance) provide valuable information about eye care in the antiquity. These small, usually stone-made pieces bore engravings with the names of eye doctors and also the collyria used to treat an eye disease. The collyria seals have been found all over the Roman empire and Celtic territories in particular and were usually associated with military camps. In Hispania (Iberian Peninsula), only three collyria seals have been found. These findings speak about eye care in this ancient Roman province as well as about of the life of the time. This article takes a look at the utility and social significance of the collyria seals and seeks to give an insight in the ophthalmological practice of in the Roman Empire

U ove su se male kamene pečate obično gravirala imena očnih liječnika i naziv kolirija koji se rabio za pojedinu očnu bolest. Pečati za kolirije pronađeni su posvuda u Rimskom Carstvu, a ponajviše na okupiranim keltskim teritorijima i to u vojnim logorima. U Hispaniji (na Iberijskom poluotoku) pronađena su tek tri takva pečata. Ovi nam nalazi govore o njezi očiju u ovoj staroj rimskoj provinciji i o životu u to doba. Cilj je članka razmotriti korisnost i društvenu važnost pečata za kolirije i pružiti čitatelju uvid u oftalmološku praksu u Rimskom Carstvu

    Polymorphism of CLOCK gene rs3749474 as a modulator of the circadian evening carbohydrate intake impact on nutritional status in an adult sample

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the distribution of energy intake and macronutrients consumption throughout the day, and how its effect on nutritional status can be modulated by the presence of the rs3749474 polymorphism of the CLOCK gene in the Cantoblanco Platform for Nutritional Genomics (“GENYAL Platform”). This cross-sectional study was carried out on 898 volunteers between 18 and 69 years old (65.5% women). Anthropometric measurements, social issues and health, dietary, biochemical, genetic, and physical activity data were collected. Subsequently, 21 statistical interaction models were designed to predict the body mass index (BMI) considering seven dietary variables analyzed by three genetic models (adjusted by age, sex, and physical activity). The average BMI was 26.9 ± 4.65 kg/m2, 62.14% presented an excess weight (BMI > 25 kg/m2). A significant interaction was observed between the presence of the rs3749474 polymorphism and the evening carbohydrate intake (% of the total daily energy intake [%TEI]) (adjusted p = 0.046), when predicting the BMI. Participants carrying TT/CT genotype showed a positive association between the evening carbohydrate intake (%TEI) and BMI (β = 0.3379, 95% CI = (0.1689,0.5080)) and (β = 0.1529, 95% CI = (−0.0164,0.3227)), respectively, whereas the wild type allele (CC) showed a negative association (β = −0.0321, 95% CI = (−0.1505,0.0862)).     Isotonic Glycerol and Sodium Hyaluronate Containing Artificial Tear Decreases Conjunctivochalasis after One and Three Months: A Self-Controlled, Unmasked Study.

    Dry eye complaints are ranked as the most frequent symptoms of patients visiting ophthalmologists. Conjunctivochalasis is a common dry eye disorder, which can cause an unstable tear film and ocular discomfort. The severe conjunctivochalasis characterized by high LId-Parallel COnjunctival Folds (LIPCOF) degree usually requires surgical intervention, where a conservative therapy would be highly desirable. Here we examined the efficacy of a preservative-free, inorganic salt-free unit-dose artificial tear, called Conheal containing isotonic glycerol and 0.015% sodium hyaluronate in a prospective, unmasked, self-controlled study involving 20 patients. The regular use of the glycerol/hyaluronate artificial tear in three months caused a significant improvement in the recorded parameters. Conjunctivochalasis decreased from a mean LIPCOF degree of 2.9 ± 0.4 on both eyes to 1.4 ± 0.6 on the right (median decrease of -2 points, 95% CI from -2.0 to -1.0), and to 1.4 ± 0.7 on the left eye (median decrease of -1 points, 95% CI from -2.0 to -1.0) (p<0.001 for both sides). The tear film breakup time (TFBUT) lengthened from 4.8 ± 1.9 seconds on both eyes to 5.9 ± 2.3 seconds (mean increase of 1.1 seconds, 95% CI from 0.2 to 2.0) and 5.7 ± 1.8 seconds (mean increase of 0.9 seconds, 95% CI from 0.3 to 1.5) on the right and left eyes, respectively (p(right eyes) = 0.020, p(left eyes) = 0.004). The corneal lissamine staining (Oxford Scheme grade) was reduced from 1.3 ± 0.6 on the right and 1.4 ± 0.6 on the left eye significantly (p<0.001) to 0.3 ± 0.4 and 0.2 ± 0.4 on the right and the left eyes. The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire score indicating the subjective complaints of the patients also decreased from a mean value of 36.2 ± 25.3 to 15.6 ± 16.7 (p<0.001). In this study, the artificial tear, Conheal decreased the grade of the conjunctivochalasis significantly after one month of regular use already, from the LIPCOF degree 3, considered as indication of conjunctival surgery, to a LIPCOF degree 2 or lower requiring a conservative therapy. Our results raise the possibility that vision-related quality of life can be significantly improved by conservative therapies even in severe conjunctivochalasis

    INTROGRESSION OF A POWDERY MILDEW RESISTANCE GENE INTO MARKET CLASS FABADA

    Powdery mildew (PM) is being one of the most serious diseases affecting bean crops in the north of Spain. Two independent resistance genes were reported in the cultivar Porrillo Sintetico, one of them located on linkage group (LG) Pv11, conferring partial resistance, and other located on LG Pv04 conferring a total resistance response (Campa and Ferreira 2017). The objective of this work was the introgression of the gene conferring total resistance from Porrillo Sintetico into the line X2776. Genomic regions introgressed after the breeding program were studied using ‘genotyping by sequencing’ (GBS). MATERIAL AND METHODS X2776 is a breeding line developed at the SERIDA having fabada seed phenotype (white and very large seeds), determinate growth habit (finfin) and two introgressed resistance locus against virus (I gene) and anthracnose (Co-2 cluster) (Ferreira et al. 2016). The X2776 line shows a partial resistance response against PM. Total resistance in X2776 was introgressed using a backcrossing method including six backcross generations followed by four self-pollinated generations with individual plant selection using resistance tests. Seed and plant phenotype were also considered in the selection process of each generation. Resistance tests were carried out according to Trabanco et al. (2012) using a local isolate of PM maintained on plants of susceptible bean cv. Xana in spore-proof chambers. The parental lines X2776, Porrillo Sintetico and four resistant plants derived from F4BC6 families were genotyped through GBS using the ApeKI restriction enzyme. Physical positions of the SNP markers were established using the Phaseolus vulgaris genome v1 (GenBank Assembly accession GCF_000499855.1)
