The Affective Impact of Financial Skewness on Neural Activity and Choice
Few finance theories consider the influence of “skewness” (or large and asymmetric but unlikely outcomes) on financial choice. We investigated the impact of skewed gambles on subjects' neural activity, self-reported affective responses, and subsequent preferences using functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI). Neurally, skewed gambles elicited more anterior insula activation than symmetric gambles equated for expected value and variance, and positively skewed gambles also specifically elicited more nucleus accumbens (NAcc) activation than negatively skewed gambles. Affectively, positively skewed gambles elicited more positive arousal and negatively skewed gambles elicited more negative arousal than symmetric gambles equated for expected value and variance. Subjects also preferred positively skewed gambles more, but negatively skewed gambles less than symmetric gambles of equal expected value. Individual differences in both NAcc activity and positive arousal predicted preferences for positively skewed gambles. These findings support an anticipatory affect account in which statistical properties of gambles—including skewness—can influence neural activity, affective responses, and ultimately, choice
Quark Coulomb Interactions and the Mass Difference of Mirror Nuclei
We study the Okamoto-Nolen-Schiffer (ONS) anomaly in the binding energy of
mirror nuclei at high density by adding a single neutron or proton to a quark
gluon plasma. In this high-density limit we find an anomaly equal to two-thirds
of the Coulomb exchange energy of a proton. This effect is dominated by quark
electromagnetic interactions---rather than by the up-down quark mass
difference. At normal density we calculate the Coulomb energy of neutron matter
using a string-flip quark model. We find a nonzero Coulomb energy because of
the neutron's charged constituents. This effect could make a significant

The Implications of M Dwarf Flares on the Detection and Characterization of Exoplanets at Infrared Wavelengths
We present the results of an observational campaign which obtained high time
cadence, high precision, simultaneous optical and IR photometric observations
of three M dwarf flare stars for 47 hours. The campaign was designed to
characterize the behavior of energetic flare events, which routinely occur on M
dwarfs, at IR wavelengths to milli-magnitude precision, and quantify to what
extent such events might influence current and future efforts to detect and
characterize extrasolar planets surrounding these stars. We detected and
characterized four highly energetic optical flares having U-band total energies
of ~7.8x10^30 to ~1.3x10^32 ergs, and found no corresponding response in the J,
H, or Ks bandpasses at the precision of our data. For active dM3e stars, we
find that a ~1.3x10^32 erg U-band flare (delta Umax ~1.5 mag) will induce <8.3
(J), <8.5 (H), and <11.7 (Ks) milli-mags of a response. A flare of this energy
or greater should occur less than once per 18 hours. For active dM4.5e stars,
we find that a ~5.1x10^31 erg U-band flare (delta Umax ~1.6 mag) will induce
<7.8 (J), <8.8 (H), and <5.1 (Ks) milli-mags of a response. A flare of this
energy or greater should occur less than once per 10 hours. No evidence of
stellar variability not associated with discrete flare events was observed at
the level of ~3.9 milli-mags over 1 hour time-scales and at the level of ~5.6
milli-mags over 7.5 hour time-scales. We therefore demonstrate that most M
dwarf stellar activity and flares will not influence IR detection and
characterization studies of M dwarf exoplanets above the level of ~5-11
milli-mags, depending on the filter and spectral type. We speculate that the
most energetic megaflares on M dwarfs, which occur at rates of once per month,
are likely to be easily detected in IR observations with sensitivity of tens of

A Search for a Sub-Earth Sized Companion to GJ 436 and a Novel Method to Calibrate Warm Spitzer IRAC Observations
We discovered evidence for a possible additional 0.75 R_Earth transiting
planet in the NASA EPOXI observations of the known M dwarf exoplanetary system
GJ 436. Based on an ephemeris determined from the EPOXI data, we predicted a
transit event in an extant Spitzer Space Telescope 8 micron data set of this
star. Our subsequent analysis of those Spitzer data confirmed the signal of the
predicted depth and at the predicted time, but we found that the transit depth
was dependent on the aperture used to perform the photometry. Based on these
suggestive findings, we gathered new Warm Spitzer Observations of GJ 436 at 4.5
microns spanning a time of transit predicted from the EPOXI and Spitzer 8
micron candidate events. The 4.5 micron data permit us to rule out a transit at
high confidence, and we conclude that the earlier candidate transit signals
resulted from correlated noise in the EPOXI and Spitzer 8 micron observations.
In the course of this investigation, we developed a novel method for correcting
the intrapixel sensitivity variations of the 3.6 and 4.5 micron channels of the
Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) instrument. We demonstrate the sensitivity of Warm
Spitzer observations of M dwarfs to confirm sub-Earth sized planets. Our
analysis will inform similar work that will be undertaken to use Warm Spitzer

Studying the atmosphere of the exoplanet HAT-P-7b via secondary eclipse measurements with EPOXI, Spitzer and Kepler
The highly irradiated transiting exoplanet, HAT-P-7b, currently provides one
of the best opportunities for studying planetary emission in the optical and
infrared wavelengths. We observe six near-consecutive secondary eclipses of
HAT-P-7b at optical wavelengths with the EPOXI spacecraft. We place an upper
limit on the relative eclipse depth of 0.055% (95% confidence). We also analyze
Spitzer observations of the same target in the infrared, obtaining secondary
eclipse depths of 0.098+/-0.017%, 0.159+/-0.022%, 0.245+/-0.031% and
0.225+/-0.052% in the 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 micron IRAC bands respectively. We
combine these measurements with the recently published Kepler secondary eclipse
measurement, and generate atmospheric models for the day-side of the planet
that are consistent with both the optical and infrared measurements. The data
are best fit by models with a temperature inversion, as expected from the high
incident flux. The models predict a low optical albedo of ~< 0.13, with
subsolar abundances of Na, K, TiO and VO. We also find that the best fitting
models predict that 10% of the absorbed stellar flux is redistributed to the
night side of the planet, which is qualitatively consistent with the
inefficient day-night redistribution apparent in the Kepler phase curve. Models
without thermal inversions fit the data only at the 1.25 sigma level, and also
require an overabundance of methane, which is not expected in the very hot
atmosphere of HAT-P-7b. We also analyze the eight transits of HAT-P-7b present
in the EPOXI dataset and improve the constraints on the system parameters,
finding a period of P = 2.2047308+/-0.0000025 days, a stellar radius of R* =
1.824+/-0.089Rsun, a planetary radius of Rp = 1.342+/-0.068RJup and an

Thermal Emission of WASP-14b Revealed with Three Spitzer Eclipses
Exoplanet WASP-14b is a highly irradiated, transiting hot Jupiter. Joshi et
al. calculate an equilibrium temperature Teq of 1866 K for zero albedo and
reemission from the entire planet, a mass of 7.3 +/- 0.5 Jupiter masses and a
radius of 1.28 +/- 0.08 Jupiter radii. Its mean density of 4.6 g/cm3 is one of
the highest known for planets with periods less than 3 days. We obtained three
secondary eclipse light curves with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The eclipse
depths from the best jointly fit model are +/- at 4.5
{\mu}m and +/- at 8.0 {\mu}m. The corresponding brightness
temperatures are 2212 +/- 94 K and 1590 +/- 116 K. A slight ambiguity between
systematic models suggests a conservative 3.6 {\mu}m eclipse depth of
+/- and brightness temperature of 2242 +/- 55 K. Although extremely
irradiated, WASP-14b does not show any distinct evidence of a thermal
inversion. In addition, the present data nominally favor models with day night
energy redistribution less than . The current data are generally
consistent with oxygen-rich as well as carbon-rich compositions, although an
oxygen-rich composition provides a marginally better fit. We confirm a
significant eccentricity of e = 0.087 +/- 0.002 and refine other orbital

On the existence of star products on quotient spaces of linear Hamiltonian torus actions
We discuss BFV deformation quantization of singular symplectic quotient
spaces in the special case of linear Hamiltonian torus actions. In particular,
we show that the Koszul complex on the moment map of an effective linear
Hamiltonian torus action is acyclic. We rephrase the nonpositivity condition of
Arms, Gotay and Jennings for linear Hamiltonian torus actions. It follows that

Gran Telescopio Canarias OSIRIS Transiting Exoplanet Atmospheric Survey: Detection of potassium in XO-2b from narrowband spectrophotometry
We present Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) optical transit narrow-band
photometry of the hot-Jupiter exoplanet XO-2b using the OSIRIS instrument. This
unique instrument has the capabilities to deliver high cadence narrow-band
photometric lightcurves, allowing us to probe the atmospheric composition of
hot Jupiters from the ground. The observations were taken during three transit
events which cover four wavelengths at spectral resolutions near 500, necessary
for observing atmospheric features, and have near-photon limited sub-mmag
precisions. Precision narrow-band photometry on a large aperture telescope
allows for atmospheric transmission spectral features to be observed for
exoplanets around much fainter stars than those of the well studied targets
HD209458b and HD189733b, providing access to the majority of known transiting
planets. For XO-2b, we measure planet-to-star radius contrasts of
R_pl/R_star=0.10508+/-0.00052 at 6792 Ang, 0.10640+/-0.00058 at 7582 Ang, and
0.10686+/-0.00060 at 7664.9 Ang, and 0.10362+/-0.00051 at 8839 Ang. These
measurements reveal significant spectral features at two wavelengths, with an
absorption level of 0.067+/-0.016% at 7664.9 Ang due to atmospheric potassium
in the line core (a 4.1-sigma significance level), and an absorption level of
0.058+/-0.016% at 7582 Ang, (a 3.6-sigma significance level). When comparing
our measurements to hot-Jupiter atmospheric models, we find good agreement with
models which are dominated in the optical by alkali metals. This is the first
evidence for potassium in an extrasolar planet, an element that has long been
theorized along with sodium to be a dominant source of opacity at optical
