    Rotational spectrum of cis–cis HOONO

    The pure rotational spectrum of cis-cis peroxynitrous acid, HOONO, has been observed. Over 220 transitions, sampling states up to J(')=67 and K-a(')=31, have been fitted with an rms uncertainty of 48.4 kHz. The experimentally determined rotational constants agree well with ab initio values for the cis-cis conformer, a five-membered ring formed by intramolecular hydrogen bonding. The small, positive inertial defect Delta=0.075667(60) amu A(2) and lack of any observable torsional splittings in the spectrum indicate that cis-cis HOONO exists in a well-defined planar structure at room temperature

    Rotational spectroscopy and dipole moment of cis-cis HOONO and DOONO

    The rotational spectrum of cis-cis HOONO has been studied over a broad range of frequencies, 13–840 GHz, using pulsed beam Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy and room-temperature flow cell submillimeter spectroscopy. The rotational spectrum of the deuterated isotopomer, cis-cis DOONO, has been studied over a subset of this range, 84–640 GHz. Improved spectroscopic constants have been determined for HOONO, and the DOONO spectrum is analyzed for the first time. Weak-field Stark effect measurements in the region of 84–110 GHz have been employed to determine the molecular dipole moments of cis-cis HOONO [”a=0.542(8) D,”b=0.918(15) D,”=1.07(2) D] and DOONO [”a=0.517(9) D,”b=0.930(15) D,”=1.06(2) D]. The quadrupole coupling tensor in the principal inertial axis system for the 14N nucleus has been determined to be chiaa=1.4907(25) MHz,chibb=–4.5990(59) MHz,chiab=3.17(147) MHz, and chicc=3.1082(59) MHz. Coordinates of the H atom in the center-of-mass frame have been determined with use of the Kraitchman equations, |aH|=0.516 Å and |bH|=1.171 Å. The inertial defects of HOONO and DOONO are consistent with a planar equilibrium structure with significant out-of-plane H atom torsional motion. Comparisons of the present results are made to ab initio calculations

    Submillimeter Spectrum of Formic Acid

    We have measured new submillimeter-wave data around 600 GHz and around 1.1 THz for the 13C isotopologue of formic acid and for the two deuterium isotopomers; in each case for both the trans and cis rotamer. For cis-DCOOH and cis-HCOOD in particular only data up to 50 GHz was previously available. For all species the quality and quantity of molecular parameters has been increased providing new measured frequencies and more precise and reliable frequencies in the range of existing and near-future submillimeter and far-infrared astronomical spectroscopy instruments such as Herschel, SOFIA and ALMA

    A search for strong, ordered magnetic fields in Herbig Ae/Be stars

    The origin of magnetic fields in intermediate-mass and high-mass stars is fundamentally a mystery. Clues toward solving this basic astrophysical problem can likely be found at the pre-main sequence (PMS) evolutionary stage. With this work, we perform the largest and most sensitive search for magnetic fields in pre-main sequence Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars. Sixty-eight observations of 50 HAeBe stars have been obtained in circularly polarised light using the FORS1 spectropolarimeter at the ESO VLT. An analysis of both Balmer and metallic lines reveals the possible presence of weak longitudinal magnetic fields in photospheric lines of two HAeBe stars, HD 101412 and BF Ori. The intensity of the longitudinal fields detected in HD 101412 and BF Ori suggest that they correspond to globally-ordered magnetic fields with surface intensities of order 1 kG. Monte Carlo simulations of the longitudinal field measurements of the undetected stars allow us to place an upper limits of about 300 G on the general presence of aligned magnetic dipole magnetic fields, and of about 500 G on perpendicular dipole fields. We find that the observed bulk incidence of magnetic HAeBe stars in our sample is 8-12%, in good agreement with that of magnetic main sequence stars of similar masses. We also find that the rms longitudinal field intensity of magnetically-detected HAeBe stars is similar to that of Ap stars and consistent with magnetic flux conservation during stellar evolution. These results are all in agreement with the hypothesis that the magnetic fields of main sequence Ap/Bp stars are fossils, which already exist within the stars at the pre-main sequence stage. Finally, we explore the ability of our new magnetic data to constrain magnetospheric accretion in Herbig Ae/Be stars.Comment: Accepted by Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2007 January 11.     HIV-Positive Men who Use the Internet to Meet Other Men in France: Results from the French “Net Gay Baromùtre” Study

    International audienceObjectives: With data from this biennial study, we will present some of the HIV-positive respondents’ social and sexual practices and identify predictors of regular unprotected anal intercourse in this group.Method: Men were recruited between January and April 2009 (n = 19 052) through personalized e-mailing on nine major websites for France’s diverse MSM population. Approximately 12 % of the sample was HIV-positive (n = 2229). Bivariate analyses (c2, t-test) as well as simple and multivariate logistic regressions were performed.Results: Compared to HIV-negative men, a significantly greater proportion of HIV-positive respondents were older, identified as homosexual, resided in the Paris metropolitan area, and were active members of the gay community. In particular, more HIV-positive men went to sex clubs, outdoor sex venues, and saunas in the previous 12 months. Drug use over this period of time was also more prevalent among HIV-positive men and this latter group had twice as many sexual partners as HIV-negative men. A significantly greater number of HIV-positive men reported regularly engaging in unprotected anal sex and about three times as many of them had “barebacked” in the past 12 months, compared to HIV-negative men: HIV-negative men engaged in less serosorting. The multivariate regression analysis found that regularly engaging in unprotected anal sex was significantly associated in HIV-positive men with the following factors: residing in the Paris metropolitan area, having more than 11 casual partners in the previous 12 months, meeting casual partners online, using dating websites for MSM that feature “hard” sexual practices, using drugs in the past 12 months, having contracted an STI over this period of time, not having been tested for HIV over this same period of time, engaging in bareback sex with a couple, having been in contact with a partner’s sperm during oral sex, engaging in group sex, and practicing fist fucking.Conclusion: This online survey reached many HIV-positive respondents. Overall, these men seem to be more exposed to some risk factors. This can be explained by positive HIV status but this could also be explained by sensation seeking, by a taste for risk, as well as by a disinterest in preventive strategies

    Performance des lieux d'enfouissement sanitaire de LaterriÚre et de Ste-Sophie, Québec, Canada

    Ce travail décrit les caractéristiques hydrogéologiques et chimiques de deux lieux d'enfouissement de déchets municipaux localisés au Québec. Le site de LaterriÚre est en opération depuis 1971 dans une ancienne sabliÚre. Sous les dépÎts meubles, la topographie du sotte rocheux est marquée par une vallée qui forme une limite imperméable à l'aquifÚre de sable et impose un écoulement convergent de l'eau souterraine vers la riviÚre Chicoutimi. Le site de Ste-Sophie, en opération depuis 1976, repose sur une couche de 3,5 mÚtres de sables fins saturés recouvrant un lit d'argile marine. La surélévation de la nappe dans les déchets favorise un écoulement divergent vers le périmÚtre de la zone d'enfouissement.Un réseau de piézomÚtres installé en bordure des deux sites a permis pendant trente mois de prélever des échantillons d'eau et de les analyser. Dans chaque panache de contamination, l'alcalinité, les ions majeurs Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl¯, le fer, le manganÚse, l'azote total et ammoniacal, les DCO et DBO5 montrent des concentrations généralement supérieures à celles de L'eau naturelle ambiante. A proximité des deux Lieux d'enfouissement, les teneurs en cadmium, chrome, nickel et plomb excÚdent les normes québécoises de potabiLité de l'eau. Dans chaque cas, ta distribution des contaminants est surtout régie par le réseau d'écoulement. La dispersion hydrodynamique et les réactions géochimiques dans le sous-sol sont des processus importants d'atténuation des contaminants.This paper describes the hydrogeological and geochemical features of two sanitary landfill sites located in the Province of Quebec : Laterriere and Ste-Sophie. The main objective is to evaluate the leachate attenuation performance of each site. For this project, the Quebec Ministry of the Environment chose two sites with contrasting hydrogeological settings.The Laterriere landfill, in operation since 1971, covers an area of about 32 ha. The refuse is deposited in an old sandpit and the landfill boundary is located 400 meters away from the Chicoutimi River, 25 meters above the stream water level. The bedrock topography shows a valley under the landfill which acts an an impervious base for the sand aquifer and induces a convergent groundwater flow towards the river.The Ste-Sophie landfill covers an area of 48 ha and began operating in 1976. The refuse zone is located on flat ground 350 meters away from the Ruisseau-aux-Castors. The refuse is deposited on a 3.5 meter layer of fine sands nearly saturated overlying a marine clay bed. A water table mound is observed beneath the landfill, resulting in diverging low lines outward from the center of the Landfill.For each site, the occurence and migration of contaminants was investigated using networks of piezometers. Sampling was performed monthly over a period of thirty months and thirty parameters were analyzed on each sample. The analytical results were entered in a database and treated by statistical methods.The shape of each contamination plume is controlled mainly by the groundwater flow system. At Laterriere, the plume is restricted to a narrow path between the landfill and the river and inside a bedrock valley. This flow net has been simulated by a two-dimensional finite elements model. At Ste-Sophie, the divergence of flow lines due to groundwater mounding beneath the site causes dispersion of contaminants around the landfill. The use of an analytical solution shows that longitudinal dispersivity is a major process of contaminant migration.For the two landfills, the highest concentrations of contaminants occur directly beneath or close to the boundaries of the landfills. Total alkalinity, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl¯, iron, manganÚse, total and ammoniacal nitrogen, chemical and biological oxygen demand (COD and BOD) are much above background levels throughout the plume. Sulfate is also a major contaminant at Ste-Sophie with concentration of 1100/mg/l. The concentrations of cadmium, chrome, nickel and lead exceed the drinking water standards near the two landfill sites but they decline rapidly in the direction of flow. At Laterriere, the decline in chloride concentration measured at the discharge point S-23 is about 85 % while the decline of reactive contaminants, such as iron and COD, is respectively 98 and 99.7 %.Finally, we discuss hydrogeological criteria for landfill site selection in Quebec

    Torsion–rotation global analysis of the first three torsional states (Îœt = 0, 1, 2) and terahertz database for methanol

    Stimulated by recent THz measurements of the methanol spectrum in one of our laboratories, undertaken in support of NASA programs related to the Herschel Space Observatory (HSO) and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), we have carried out a global analysis of available microwave and high-resolution infrared data for the first three torsional states (Îœt = 0, 1, 2), and for J values up to 30. This global fit of approximately 5600 frequency measurements and 19 000 Fourier transform far infrared (FTFIR) wavenumber measurements to 119 parameters reaches the estimated experimental measurement accuracy for the FTFIR transitions, and about twice the estimated experimental measurement accuracy for the microwave, submillimeter-wave, and terahertz transitions. The present fit is essentially a continuation of our earlier work, but we have greatly expanded our previous data set and have added a large number of new torsion–rotation interaction terms to the Hamiltonian in our previously used computer program. The results, together with a number of calculated (but unmeasured) transitions, including their line strength, estimated uncertainty, and lower state energy, are made available in the supplementary material as a database formatted to be useful for astronomical searches. Some discussion of several open spectroscopic problems, e.g., (i) an improved notation for the numerous parameters in the torsion–rotation Hamiltonian, (ii) possible causes of the failure to fit frequency measurements to the estimated measurement uncertainty, and (iii) pitfalls to be avoided when intercomparing apparently identical parameters from the internal axis method and the rho axis method are also given

    Laboratory Spectroscopy of CH(+) and Isotopic CH

    The A1II - X1(Epsilon) electronic band of the CH(+) ion has been used as a probe of the physical and dynamical conditions of the ISM for 65 years. In spite of being one of the first molecular species observed in the ISM and the very large number of subsequent observations with large derived column densities, the pure rotational spectra of CH+ has remained elusive in both the laboratory and in the ISM as well. We report the first laboratory measurement of the pure rotation of the CH(+) ion and discuss the detection of CH-13(+) in the ISM. Also reported are the somewhat unexpected chemical conditions that resulted in laboratory production

    Single-electron transistors with wide operating temperature range

    Abstract : Single-electron transistors are fabricated with a planar self-aligned process using chemical mechanical polishing. The method is demonstrated with Ti∕TiOxTi∕TiOx junctions and resistless lithography. The device characterization showed Coulomb blockade up to 433K433K. High temperature data allowed one to calculate the impact of the process variations on the charging energy and thus on a realistic operating temperature. It is found that single electron devices can have an operating temperature range similar to conventional silicon transistors, opening the door to hybrid designs. These approaches are promising because advanced functionality is created by an optimal combination of both technology strengths
