Elliptic curve configurations on Fano surfaces
The elliptic curves on a surface of general type constitute an obstruction
for the cotangent sheaf to be ample. In this paper, we give the classification
of the configurations of the elliptic curves on the Fano surface of a smooth
cubic threefold. That means that we give the number of such curves, their
intersections and a plane model. This classification is linked to the

'This is what democracy looks like' : New Labour's blind spot and peripheral vision
New Labour in government since 1997 has been roundly criticized for not possessing a clear, coherent and consistent democratic vision. The absence of such a grand vision has resulted, from this critical perspective, in an absence of 'joined-up' thinking about democracy in an evolving multi-level state. Tensions have been all too apparent between the government's desire to exert central direction - manifested in its most pathological form as 'control freakery' - and its democratising initiatives derived from 'third-way' obsessions with 'decentralising', 'empowering' and 'enabling'. The purpose of this article is to examine why New Labour displayed such apparently impaired democratic vision and why it appeared incapable of conceiving of democratic reform 'in the round'. This article seeks to explain these apparent paradoxes, however, through utilising the notion of 'macular degeneration'. In this analysis, the perceived democratic blind spot of New Labour at Westminster is connected to a democratic peripheral vision, which has envisaged innovative participatory and decentred initiatives in governance beyond Westminster
Association between muscle strength and the\ud cardiopulmonary status of individuals living with\ud HIV/AIDS
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare aerobic function [anaerobic threshold (%_VVO2-AT),\ud
respiratory compensation point (%_VVO2-RCP) and peak oxygen uptake (_VVO2peak)] between physically active patients\ud
with HIV/AIDS and matched controls and to examine associations between disease status, poor muscle strength,\ud
depression (as estimated by the profile of mood states questionnaire) and the aerobic performance of patients.\ud
METHODS: Progressive treadmill test data for %_VVO2-AT (V-slope method), RCP and (_VVO2peak) were compared\ud
between 39 male patients with HIV/AIDS (age 40.6¡1.4 years) and 28 male controls (age 44.4¡2.1 years) drawn\ud
from the same community and matched for habitual physical activity. Within-patient data were also examined in\ud
relation to CD4+ counts (nadir and current data) and peak isokinetic knee torque.\ud
RESULTS: AT, RCP and (_VVO2peak) values were generally similar for patients and controls.Within the patient sample,\ud
binary classification suggested that AT, RCP and (_VVO2peak) values were not associated with either the nadir or\ud
current CD4+ count, but treadmill test variables were positively associated with peak isokinetic knee torque.\ud
CONCLUSION: The aerobic performance of physically active patients with HIV/AIDS is generally well conserved.\ud
Nevertheless, poor muscle strength is observed in some HIV/AIDS patients, which is associated with lower anaerobic\ud
power and (_VVO2peak), suggesting the possibility of enhancing the aerobic performance of patients with weak\ud
muscles through appropriate muscle-strengthening activities

GeV/c^2 and a width of GeV/c^2 . This exotic state, the , is produced with a
dependence which is different from that of the meson, indicating

Water Vapor Measurements by Howard University Raman Lidar during the WAVES 2006 Campaign
Retrieval of water vapor mixing ratio using the Howard University Raman Lidar is presented with emphasis on three aspects: i) performance of the lidar against collocated radiosondes and Raman lidar, ii) investigation of the atmospheric state variables when poor agreement between lidar and radiosondes values occurred and iii) a comparison with satellite-based measurements. The measurements were acquired during the Water Vapor Validation Experiment Sondes/Satellites 2006 field campaign. Ensemble averaging of water vapor mixing ratio data from ten night-time comparisons with Vaisala RS92 radiosondes shows on average an agreement within 10 % up to approx. 8 km. A similar analysis of lidar-to-lidar data of over 700 profiles revealed an agreement to within 20 % over the first 7 km (10 % below 4 km). A grid analysis, defined in the temperature - relative humidity space, was developed to characterize the lidar - radiosonde agreement and quantitatively localizes regions of strong and weak correlations as a function of altitude, temperature or relative humidity. Three main regions of weak correlation emerge: i) regions of low relative humidity and low temperature, ii) moderate relative humidity at low temperatures and iii) low relative humidity at moderate temperatures. Comparison of Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder and Tropospheric Emission Sounder satellites retrievals of moisture with that of Howard University Raman Lidar showed a general agreement in the trend but the formers miss a lot of the details in atmospheric structure due to their low resolution. A relative difference of about 20 % is usually found between lidar and satellites measurements
