Sunyaev-Zel'dovich clusters reconstruction in multiband bolometer camera surveys
We present a new method for the reconstruction of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ)
galaxy clusters in future SZ-survey experiments using multiband bolometer
cameras such as Olimpo, APEX, or Planck. Our goal is to optimise SZ-Cluster
extraction from our observed noisy maps. We wish to emphasize that none of the
algorithms used in the detection chain is tuned on prior knowledge on the SZ
-Cluster signal, or other astrophysical sources (Optical Spectrum, Noise
Covariance Matrix, or covariance of SZ Cluster wavelet coefficients). First, a
blind separation of the different astrophysical components which contribute to
the observations is conducted using an Independent Component Analysis (ICA)
method. Then, a recent non linear filtering technique in the wavelet domain,
based on multiscale entropy and the False Discovery Rate (FDR) method, is used
to detect and reconstruct the galaxy clusters. Finally, we use the Source
Extractor software to identify the detected clusters. The proposed method was
applied on realistic simulations of observations. As for global detection
efficiency, this new method is impressive as it provides comparable results to
Pierpaoli et al. method being however a blind algorithm. Preprint with full

Experimental demonstration of an end-burning swirling flow hybrid rocket engine
International audienceWithin the framework of the European H2020 HYPROGEO program, an innovative hybrid engine combustion chamber compatible with satellite requirements (constant thrust over very long burn-times) had to be developed. A first test rig was designed and tested in order to better understand the functioning of this innovative combustion chamber, and to help the design of a breadboard to demonstrate the efficiency of this new engine with respect to the mission requirements. Two test campaigns, the first on the test rig with 87.5% hydrogen peroxide, and the second on the hybrid engine breadboard with 98% hydrogen peroxide, were performed under various operating conditions to demonstrate the catalytic ignitability of this new hybrid engine, and the sustainment of a stable combustion over firing durations up to 180 s. The test campaigns also enabled the identification of the main influencing parameter on the fuel regression rate for this innovative combustion chamber
Efficiency of thermal outgassing for tritium retention measurement and removal in ITER
Proceedings of the 22nd International Conference on Plasma Surface Interactions 2016, 22nd PSIAs a licensed nuclear facility, ITER must limit the in-vessel tritium (T) retention to reduce the risks of potential release during accidents, the inventory limit being set at 1kg. Simulations and extrapolations from existing experiments indicate that T-retention in ITER will mainly be driven by co-deposition with beryllium (Be) eroded from the first wall, with co-deposits forming mainly in the divertor region but also possibly on the first wall itself. A pulsed Laser-Induced Desorption (LID) system, called Tritium Monitor, is being designed to locally measure the T-retention in co-deposits forming on the inner divertor baffle of ITER. Regarding tritium removal, the baseline strategy is to perform baking of the plasma-facing components, at 513K for the FW and 623K for the divertor. Both baking and laser desorption rely on the thermal desorption of tritium from the surface, the efficiency of which remains unclear for thick (and possibly impure) co-deposits. This contribution reports on the results of TMAP7 studies of this efficiency for ITER-relevant deposits.Peer reviewe
CAD-Based Shielding Analysis for ITER Port Diagnostics
Radiation shielding analysis conducted in support of design development of the contemporary diagnostic systems integrated inside the ITER ports is relied on the use of CAD models. This paper presents the CAD-based MCNP Monte Carlo radiation transport and activation analyses for the Diagnostic Upper and Equatorial Port Plugs (UPP #3 and EPP #8, #17). The creation process of the complicated 3D MCNP models of the diagnostics systems was substantially accelerated by application of the CAD-to-MCNP converter programs MCAM and McCad. High performance computing resources of the Helios supercomputer allowed to speed-up the MCNP parallel transport calculations with the MPI/OpenMP interface. The found shielding solutions could be universal, reducing ports R&D costs. The shield block behind the Tritium and Deposit Monitor (TDM) optical box was added to study its influence on Shut-Down Dose Rate (SDDR) in Port Interspace (PI) of EPP#17. Influence of neutron streaming along the Lost Alpha Monitor (LAM) on the neutron energy spectra calculated in the Tangential Neutron Spectrometer (TNS) of EPP#8. For the UPP#3 with Charge eXchange Recombination Spectroscopy (CXRS-core), an excessive neutron streaming along the CXRS shutter, which should be prevented in further design iteration
Large strain compressive response of 2-D periodic representative volume element for random foam microstructures
A numerical investigation has been conducted to determine the influence of Representative Volume Element (RVE) size and degree of irregularity of polymer foam microstructure on its compressive mechanical properties, including stiffness, plateau stress and onset strain of densification. Periodic two-dimensional RVEs have been generated using a Voronoi-based numerical algorithm and compressed. Importantly, self-contact of the foamâs internal microstructure has been incorporated through the use of shell elements, allowing simulation of the foam well into the densification stage of compression; strains of up to 80 percent are applied. Results suggest that the stiffness of the foam RVE is relatively insensitive to RVE size but tends to soften as the degree of irregularity increases. Both the shape of the plateau stress and the onset strain of densification are sensitive to both the RVE size and degree of irregularity. Increasing the RVE size and decreasing the degree of irregularity both tend to result in a decrease of the gradient of the plateau region, while increasing the RVE size and degree of irregularity both tend to decrease the onset strain of densification. Finally, a method of predicting the onset strain of densification to an accuracy of about 10 per cent, while reducing the computational cost by two orders of magnitude is suggested

The implicit objective of the biennial "international - Traveling Workshop on
Interactions between Sparse models and Technology" (iTWIST) is to foster
collaboration between international scientific teams by disseminating ideas
through both specific oral/poster presentations and free discussions. For its
second edition, the iTWIST workshop took place in the medieval and picturesque
town of Namur in Belgium, from Wednesday August 27th till Friday August 29th,
2014. The workshop was conveniently located in "The Arsenal" building within
walking distance of both hotels and town center. iTWIST'14 has gathered about
70 international participants and has featured 9 invited talks, 10 oral
presentations, and 14 posters on the following themes, all related to the
theory, application and generalization of the "sparsity paradigm":
Sparsity-driven data sensing and processing; Union of low dimensional
subspaces; Beyond linear and convex inverse problem; Matrix/manifold/graph
sensing/processing; Blind inverse problems and dictionary learning; Sparsity
and computational neuroscience; Information theory, geometry and randomness;

safety. Within this context, the structural health monitoring (SHM) framework allows a quantitative assessment of the structural integrity, serviceability and performance, facilitating better-informed decisions for the management of the existing infrastructure. The European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) established the exploratory research project MITICA (Monitoring Transport Infrastructures with Connected and Automated vehicles) to investigate the opportunity to use novel methods for infrastructure motoring, aiming at the efficient
maintenance of the European aging road infrastructure. This report summarizes the discussion and the outcomes of a workshop held at the JRC in Ispra (Italy) on June 6-7 2022, as part of the MITICA project.
Considering the EU priority âA Europe fit for the digital ageâ, the workshop was dedicated to SHM and its application to civil infrastructure, focusing on innovative indirect structural health monitoring (iSHM) approaches that rely on the vehicle-bridge interaction and the deployment of sensor-equipped vehicles for the monitoring of the existing bridge infrastructure. The report aims to become a reference document in the area of iSHM using passing vehicles, for both scholars and policy makers

An embedded cohesive crack model for finite element analysis of brickwork masonry fracture
This paper presents a numerical procedure for fracture of brickwork masonry based on the strong discontinuity approach. The model is an extension of the cohesive model prepared by the authors for concrete, and takes into account the anisotropy of the material. A simple central-force model is used for the stress versus crack opening curve. The additional degrees of freedom defining the crack opening are determined at the crack level, thus avoiding the need of performing a static condensation at the element level. The need for a tracking algorithm is avoided by using a consistent procedure for the selection of the separated nodes. Such a model is then implemented into a commercial code by means of a user subroutine, consequently being contrasted with experimental results. Fracture properties of masonry are independently measured for two directions on the composed masonry, and then input in the numerical model. This numerical procedure accurately predicts the experimental mixed-mode fracture records for different orientations of the brick layers on masonry panels
