Soliton pair dynamics in patterned ferromagnetic ellipses
Confinement alters the energy landscape of nanoscale magnets, leading to the
appearance of unusual magnetic states, such as vortices, for example. Many
basic questions concerning dynamical and interaction effects remain unanswered,
and nanomagnets are convenient model systems for studying these fundamental
physical phenomena. A single vortex in restricted geometry, also known as a
non-localized soliton, possesses a characteristic translational excitation mode
that corresponds to spiral-like motion of the vortex core around its
equilibrium position. Here, we investigate, by a microwave reflection
technique, the dynamics of magnetic soliton pairs confined in lithographically
defined, ferromagnetic Permalloy ellipses. Through a comparison with
micromagnetic simulations, the observed strong resonances in the subgigahertz
frequency range can be assigned to the translational modes of vortex pairs with
parallel or antiparallel core polarizations. Vortex polarizations play a
negligible role in the static interaction between two vortices, but their
effect dominates the dynamics.Comment: supplemental movies on

Fixed duration pursuit-evasion differential game with integral constraints
We investigate a pursuit-evasion differential game of countably many pursuers and one evader. Integral constraints are imposed on control functions of the players. Duration of the game is fixed and the payoff of the game is infimum of the distances between the evader and pursuers when the game is completed. Purpose of the pursuers is to minimize the payoff and that of the evader is to maximize it. Optimal strategies of the players are constructed, and the value of the game is found. It should be noted that energy resource of any pursuer may be less than that of the evader
Small RNA analysis in Sindbis virus infected human HEK293 cells
In contrast to the defence mechanism of RNA interference (RNAi) in plants and invertebrates, its role in the innate response to virus infection of mammals is a matter of debate. Since RNAi has a well-established role in controlling infection of the alphavirus Sindbis virus (SINV) in insects, we have used this virus to investigate the role of RNAi in SINV infection of human cells
Mitochondrial and nuclear markers reveal a lack of genetic structure in the entocommensal nemertean Malacobdella arrokeana in the Patagonian gulfs
Abstract Malacobdella arrokeana is an entocommensal nemertean exclusively found in the bivalve geoduck Panopea abbreviata, and it is the only representative of the genus in the southern hemisphere. To characterize its genetic diversity, population structure and recent demographic history, we conducted the first genetic survey on this species, using sequence data for the cytochrome oxidase I gene (COI), 16S rRNA (16S) and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS2). Only four different ITS2 genotypes were found in the whole sample, and the two main haplotypes identified in the mitochondrial dataset were present among all localities with a diversity ranging from 0.583 to 0.939. Nucleotide diversity was low (p = 0.001?0.002). No significant genetic structure was detected between populations, and mismatch distribution patterns and neutrality tests results are consistent with a population in expansion or under selection. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed that the largest level of variance observed was due to intrapopulation variation (100, 100 and 94.39 % for 16S, COI and ITS2, respectively). Fst values were also non-significant. The observed lack of population structure is likely due to high levels of genetic connectivity in combination with the lack or permeability of biogeographic barriers and episodes of habitat modification.Fil: Fernandez Alfaya, Jose Elias. Theory of disk accretion onto supermassive black holes
Accretion onto supermassive black holes produces both the dramatic phenomena
associated with active galactic nuclei and the underwhelming displays seen in
the Galactic Center and most other nearby galaxies. I review selected aspects
of the current theoretical understanding of black hole accretion, emphasizing
the role of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence and gravitational instabilities in
driving the actual accretion and the importance of the efficacy of cooling in
determining the structure and observational appearance of the accretion flow.
Ongoing investigations into the dynamics of the plunging region, the origin of
variability in the accretion process, and the evolution of warped, twisted, or
eccentric disks are summarized.Comment: Mostly introductory review, to appear in "Supermassive black holes in
the distant Universe", ed. A.J. Barger, Kluwer Academic Publishers, in pres
Optimal control of vortex core polarity by resonant microwave pulses
In a vortex-state magnetic nano-disk, the static magnetization is curling in
the plane, except in the core region where it is pointing out-of-plane, either
up or down leading to two possible stable states of opposite core polarity p.
Dynamical reversal of p by large amplitude motion of the vortex core has
recently been demonstrated experimentally, raising fundamental interest for
potential application in magnetic storage devices. Here we demonstrate coherent
control of p by single and double microwave pulse sequences, taking advantage
of the resonant vortex dynamics in a perpendicular bias magnetic field.
Optimization of the microwave pulse duration required to switch p allows to
experimentally infer the characteristic decay time of the vortex core in the
large oscillation regime. It is found to be more than twice shorter than in the
small oscillation regime, raising the fundamental question of the non-linear
behaviour of magnetic dissipation
On a linear differential game of optimal approach of many pursuers with one evader
We consider a differential game of approach of many pursuers and one evader. The motions of all players are described by linear systems of the same type. Control functions of players are subject to integral constraints. The duration of the game is fixed. The payoff functional of the differential game is the minimum of the distances between the evader and the pursuers when the game terminates. The pursuers try to minimize the payoff functional, and the evader tries to maximize it. We obtain estimates for the payoff functional of the game, which can be guaranteed by players and explicitly describe the strategies of the players. From here we obtain that in some specific cases the value of the game exists, and optimal strategies can be constructed. An illustrative example is considered
Effective Rheology of Bubbles Moving in a Capillary Tube
We calculate the average volumetric flux versus pressure drop of bubbles
moving in a single capillary tube with varying diameter, finding a square-root
relation from mapping the flow equations onto that of a driven overdamped
pendulum. The calculation is based on a derivation of the equation of motion of
a bubble train from considering the capillary forces and the entropy production
associated with the viscous flow. We also calculate the configurational
probability of the positions of the bubbles.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Search for Kaluza-Klein Graviton Emission in Collisions at TeV using the Missing Energy Signature
We report on a search for direct Kaluza-Klein graviton production in a data
sample of 84 of \ppb collisions at = 1.8 TeV, recorded
by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We investigate the final state of large
missing transverse energy and one or two high energy jets. We compare the data
with the predictions from a -dimensional Kaluza-Klein scenario in which
gravity becomes strong at the TeV scale. At 95% confidence level (C.L.) for
=2, 4, and 6 we exclude an effective Planck scale below 1.0, 0.77, and 0.71
TeV, respectively.Comment: Submitted to PRL, 7 pages 4 figures/Revision includes 5 figure
