1/N_c- expansion of the quark condensate at finite temperature
Previously the quark and meson properties in a many quark system at finite
temperature have been studied within effective QCD approaches in the Hartree
approximation. In the present paper we consider the influence of the mesonic
correlations on the quark self-energy and on the quark propagator within a
systematic - expansion. Using a general separable ansatz for the
nonlocal interaction, we derive a selfconsistent equation for the
correction to the quark propagator. For a separable model with cut-off
formfactor, we obtain a decrease of the condensate of the order of 20\% at zero
temperature. A lowering the critical temperature for the onset of the chiral
restoration transition due to the inclusion of mesonic correlations is obtained
what seems to be closer to the results from lattice calculations.Comment: 19 pages, REVTeX, 5 figure
Vacuum solutions of the gravitational field equations in the brane world model
We consider some classes of solutions of the static, spherically symmetric
gravitational field equations in the vacuum in the brane world scenario, in
which our Universe is a three-brane embedded in a higher dimensional
space-time. The vacuum field equations on the brane are reduced to a system of
two ordinary differential equations, which describe all the geometric
properties of the vacuum as functions of the dark pressure and dark radiation
terms (the projections of the Weyl curvature of the bulk, generating non-local
brane stresses). Several classes of exact solutions of the vacuum gravitational
field equations on the brane are derived. In the particular case of a vanishing
dark pressure the integration of the field equations can be reduced to the
integration of an Abel type equation. A perturbative procedure, based on the
iterative solution of an integral equation, is also developed for this case.
Brane vacuums with particular symmetries are investigated by using Lie group
techniques. In the case of a static vacuum brane admitting a one-parameter
group of conformal motions the exact solution of the field equations can be
found, with the functional form of the dark radiation and pressure terms
uniquely fixed by the symmetry. The requirement of the invariance of the field
equations with respect to the quasi-homologous group of transformations also
imposes a unique, linear proportionality relation between the dark energy and
dark pressure. A homology theorem for the static, spherically symmetric
gravitational field equations in the vacuum on the brane is also proven.Comment: 13 pages, no figures, to appear in PR
Solvable Models of Domain Walls in N=1 Supergravity
A class of exactly solvable models of domain walls are worked out in D=4
supergravity. We develop a method to embed globally supersymmetric
theories with exact BPS domain wall solutions into supergravity, by introducing
a gravitationally deformed superpotential. The gravitational deformation is
natural in the spirit of maintaining the K\"ahler invariance. The solutions of
the warp factor and the Killing spinor are also obtained. We find that three
distinct behaviors of warp factors arise depending on the value of a constant
term in the superpotential : exponentially decreasing in both sides of the
wall, flat in one side and decreasing in the other, and increasing in one side
and decreasing in the other. Only the first possibility gives the localized
massless graviton zero mode. Models with multi-walls and models with runaway

Meson Exchange Currents in (e,e'p) recoil polarization observables
A study of the effects of meson-exchange currents and isobar configurations
in reactions is presented. We use a distorted wave
impulse approximation (DWIA) model where final-state interactions are treated
through a phenomenological optical potential. The model includes relativistic
corrections in the kinematics and in the electromagnetic one- and two-body
currents. The full set of polarized response functions is analyzed, as well as
the transferred polarization asymmetry. Results are presented for proton
knock-out from closed-shell nuclei, for moderate to high momentum transfer.Comment: 44 pages, 18 figures. Added physical arguments explaining the

FGF receptor genes and breast cancer susceptibility: results from the Breast Cancer Association Consortium
Background:Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies in women. Genome-wide association studies have identified FGFR2 as a breast cancer susceptibility gene. Common variation in other fibroblast growth factor (FGF) receptors might also modify risk. We tested this hypothesis by studying genotyped single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and imputed SNPs in FGFR1, FGFR3, FGFR4 and FGFRL1 in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium.
Methods:Data were combined from 49 studies, including 53 835 cases and 50 156 controls, of which 89 050 (46 450 cases and 42 600 controls) were of European ancestry, 12 893 (6269 cases and 6624 controls) of Asian and 2048 (1116 cases and 932 controls) of African ancestry. Associations with risk of breast cancer, overall and by disease sub-type, were assessed using unconditional logistic regression.
Results:Little evidence of association with breast cancer risk was observed for SNPs in the FGF receptor genes. The strongest evidence in European women was for rs743682 in FGFR3; the estimated per-allele odds ratio was 1.05 (95 confidence interval=1.02-1.09, P=0.0020), which is substantially lower than that observed for SNPs in FGFR2.
Conclusion:Our results suggest that common variants in the other FGF receptors are not associated with risk of breast cancer to the degree observed for FGFR2. © 2014 Cancer Research UK
Evidence of Color Coherence Effects in W+jets Events from ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV
We report the results of a study of color coherence effects in ppbar
collisions based on data collected by the D0 detector during the 1994-1995 run
of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, at a center of mass energy sqrt(s) = 1.8
TeV. Initial-to-final state color interference effects are studied by examining
particle distribution patterns in events with a W boson and at least one jet.
The data are compared to Monte Carlo simulations with different color coherence
implementations and to an analytic modified-leading-logarithm perturbative
calculation based on the local parton-hadron duality hypothesis.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. Submitted to Physics Letters
Rational use of medicines: prescribing indicators at different levels of health care
Este estudo multicêntrico teve como objetivo investigar o padrão de prescrição de medicamentos para pacientes ambulatoriais atendidos em serviços de saúde vinculados a universidades com diferentes níveis de atenção, em oito cidades do sul e centro-oeste do Brasil. As prescrições coletadas foram submetidas à análise de diversos itens, incluindo os indicadores de prescrição propostos pela OMS. No total, 2.411 prescrições foram analisadas e 469 medicamentos foram identificados. O número de medicamentos prescritos por consulta, a frequência de polifarmácia e a porcentagem de consultas com pelo menos um medicamento injetável ou um antimicrobiano prescrito foram maiores em centros de saúde que ofereciam cuidados de atenção básica, em comparação com aqueles que não dispunham desse tipo de atendimento. A maioria dos medicamentos foi prescrita pelo nome genérico (86,1%). Em unidades com cuidados de atenção básica, a acessibilidade foi maior, a prescrição de medicamentos presentes nas Listas Nacional e Municipais de Medicamentos Essenciais foi mais frequente e instruções foram fornecidas aos pacientes mais comumente. Entretanto, advertências e medidas não farmacológicas foram indicadas com menor frequência. Este estudo revela tendências de prescrição de medicamentos em serviços de saúde ligados a universidades, com diferentes níveis de atenção, e indica possíveis áreas de melhoria na prática da prescrição.This multicenter study aimed to investigate prescribing patterns of drugs at different levels of health care delivery in university-affiliated outpatient clinics located in eight cities in the South and Midwest of Brazil. All prescriptions collected were analyzed for various items, including WHO prescribing indicators. A total of 2,411 prescriptions were analyzed, and 469 drugs were identified. The number of drugs prescribed per encounter, the frequency of polypharmacy, and the percentage of encounters with at least one injection or antibiotic prescribed were higher in centers providing primary health care services, compared to those where this type of care is not provided. Most drugs (86.1%) were prescribed by generic name. In centers with primary health care services, drug availability was higher, drugs included in the National and Municipal Lists of Essential Medicines were more frequently prescribed, and patients were given more instructions. However, warnings and non-pharmacological measures were less frequently recommended. This study reveals trends in drug prescribing at different levels of health care delivery in university-affiliated outpatient clinics and indicates possible areas for improvement in prescribing practices
Assessment of variation in immunosuppressive pathway genes reveals TGFBR2 to be associated with prognosis of estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer after chemotherapy
Introduction: Tumor lymphocyte infiltration is associated with clinical response to chemotherapy in estrogen receptor (ER) negative breast cancer. To identify variants in immunosuppressive pathway genes associated with prognosis after adjuvant chemotherapy for ER-negative patients, we studied stage I-III invasive breast cancer patients of European ancestry, including 9,334 ER-positive (3,151 treated with chemotherapy) and 2,334 ER-negative patients (1,499 treated with chemotherapy). Methods: We pooled data from sixteen studies from the Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC), and employed two independent studies for replications. Overall 3,610 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 133 genes were genotyped as part of the Collaborative Oncological Gene-environment Study, in which phenotype and clinical data were collected and harmonized. A connectome of the adult drosophila central brain
The neural circuits responsible for behavior remain largely unknown. Previous efforts have reconstructed the complete circuits of small animals, with hundreds of neurons, and selected circuits for larger animals. Here we (the FlyEM project at Janelia and collaborators at Google) summarize new methods and present the complete circuitry of a large fraction of the brain of a much more complex animal, the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Improved methods include new procedures to prepare, image, align, segment, find synapses, and proofread such large data sets; new methods that define cell types based on connectivity in addition to morphology; and new methods to simplify access to a large and evolving data set. From the resulting data we derive a better definition of computational compartments and their connections; an exhaustive atlas of cell examples and types, many of them novel; detailed circuits for most of the central brain; and exploration of the statistics and structure of different brain compartments, and the brain as a whole. We make the data public, with a web site and resources specifically designed to make it easy to explore, for all levels of expertise from the expert to the merely curious. The public availability of these data, and the simplified means to access it, dramatically reduces the effort needed to answer typical circuit questions, such as the identity of upstream and downstream neural partners, the circuitry of brain regions, and to link the neurons defined by our analysis with genetic reagents that can be used to study their functions. Note: In the next few weeks, we will release a series of papers with more involved discussions. One paper will detail the hemibrain reconstruction with more extensive analysis and interpretation made possible by this dense connectome. Another paper will explore the central complex, a brain region involved in navigation, motor control, and sleep. A final paper will present insights from the mushroom body, a center of multimodal associative learning in the fly brain
