Irreducible characters of GSp(4, q) and dimensions of spaces of fixed vectors
In this paper, we compute the conjugacy classes and the list of irreducible
characters of GSp(4,q), where q is odd. We also determine precisely which
irreducible characters are non-cuspidal and which are generic. These characters
are then used to compute dimensions of certain subspaces of fixed vectors of
smooth admissible non-supercuspidal representations of GSp(4,F), where F is a
non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero with residue field of order

PCR and Mosquito dissection as tools to monitor filarial infection levels following mass treatment
BACKGROUND: Entomological methods may provide important tools for monitoring the progress of lymphatic filariasis elimination programs. In this study, we compared dissection of the vector, Culex quinquefasciatus, with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to assess filarial infection levels in mosquitoes in the context of a lymphatic filariasis elimination program in Leogane, Haiti. METHODS: Mosquitoes were collected using gravid traps located in 4 sentinel communities with Wuchereria bancrofti microfilaria prevalence that ranged from 0.8% to 15.9%. Captured mosquitoes were divided between dissection, to enumerate W. bancrofti larvae (L1, L2, L3) and desiccation for later analysis by PCR. PCR was conducted on DNA extracts from pooled mosquitoes (1â15 pooled females) utilizing a competitive PCR system with primers specific for the Ssp I repeat. PCR products were analyzed with a hybridization ELISA using probes specific for a control sequence and the Ssp I repeat. RESULTS: The prevalence of mosquito infection with W. bancrofti ranged from 0%â3.66% by dissection (L1âL3) and point estimates of infection prevalence, as assayed by PCR, ranged from 0.25% â 9.16%. Following mass treatment, W. bancrofti infection prevalence dropped significantly as determined by PCR and dissection in 2 of the 4 sentinel sites (Leogane and Barrier Jeudi, P = 0.04 and P = 0.005, respectively). Although transmission declined in the other two sites, larval recoveries were low and these changes were not statistically significant. DISCUSSION: Our results suggest that a single round of mass treatment can have an impact on transmission of lymphatic filariasis. The use of entomologic methods as a tool to monitor filariasis programs and the statistical limitations of mosquito trapping are discussed
Person-Affecting Paretian Egalitarianism with Variable Population Size
http://web.missouri.edu/~klinechair/on-line%20papers/person-affecting%20APE.docWhere there is a fixed population (i.e., who exists does not depend on what choice an agent makes), the deontic version of anonymous Paretian egalitarianism holds that an option is just if and only if (1) it is anonymously Pareto optimal (i.e., no feasible alternative has a permutation that is Pareto superior), and (2) it is no less equal than any other anonymously Pareto optimal option. We shall develop and discuss a version of this approach for the variable population case (i.e., where who exists does depend on what choice an agent makes). More specifically, we shall develop and discuss it in the context of a person-affecting frameworkâin which an option is just if and only if it wrongs no one according to certain plausible conditions on wronging
Who teaches primary physical education? Change and transformation through the eyes of subject leaders
This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Sport, Education and Society on 02/07/2015, available online: DOI: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13573322.2015.1061987Primary physical education (PE) lessons tend to be taught by one, or a combination of, three different groups: generalist classroom teachers, specialist primary PE teachers and so-called âadults other than teachersâ, who are almost exclusively sports coaches. Drawing upon data gathered from one-to-one interviews with 36 subject leaders (SLs), this study sought answers to two main questions: âWho delivers primary PE nowadays?â and âWhat are the consequences?â The findings revealed that the most common model for the delivery of PE involved responsibility being shared between the generalist class teacher and either a sports coach or specialist PE teacher. The SLs recognised strengths and weaknesses in all of the three main approaches used. However, while they favoured the use of specialist teachers because of their subject knowledge and expertise, the more prosaic constraints of cost and flexibility meant that the use of coaches had become increasingly popular. Whether or not, the growth of coaches is de-professionalizing the delivery of PE, it certainly appears to be exacerbating any existing tendency to turn primary PE into a pale imitation of the sport-biased curricular of secondary schools. Ironically, the apparent âthreatâ to the status of PE in the primary curriculum (as well as the status of PE specialists) posed by the growth of coaches in curricular PE in primary schools may well be exaggerated by the Primary PE and Sport Premium which appears to have added momentum to a change of direction regarding staffing the subject â towards sports coaches and away from generalist classroom teachers and PE specialists. As the shift towards outsourcing PE to commercial sports coaches becomes increasingly commonplace it seems appropriate to talk of transformation, rather than mere change, in the delivery of primary PE
No Dynamics in the Extremal Kerr Throat
Motivated by the Kerr/CFT conjecture, we explore solutions of vacuum general
relativity whose asymptotic behavior agrees with that of the extremal Kerr
throat, sometimes called the Near-Horizon Extreme Kerr (NHEK) geometry. We
argue that all such solutions are diffeomorphic to the NHEK geometry itself.
The logic proceeds in two steps. We first argue that certain charges must
vanish at all times for any solution with NHEK asymptotics. We then analyze
these charges in detail for linearized solutions. Though one can choose the
relevant charges to vanish at any initial time, these charges are not
conserved. As a result, requiring the charges to vanish at all times is a much
stronger condition. We argue that all solutions satisfying this condition are
diffeomorphic to the NHEK metric.Comment: 42 pages, 3 figures. v3: minor clarifications and correction
Obstetric anal sphincter injury rates among primiparous women with different modes of vaginal delivery
Objective: To determine whether OASI rates are increasing at equal rates among different vaginal birth modes. Methods: Using New South Wales (NSW) linked population data, the overall yearly OASI rates were determined among the 261,008 primiparous vertex singleton term births which occurred from 2001-2011. OASI rates among non-instrumental, forceps and vacuum births with and without episiotomy were also determined. Multivariable logistic regression was used to ascertain the adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for each birth category by year. The trends of the aORs over time for each birth category were compared. Results: The overall OASI rate was 4.1% in 2001 and 5.9% in 2011. The highest OASI rates were among forceps births without episiotomy (12.2% in 2001, 14.8% in 2011), and lowest for non-instrumental births without episiotomy (2.6% in 2001, 4.4% in 2011). After adjustment for known risk factors, the only birth categories to show significant increases with OASI over the study period were non-instrumental without episiotomy and forceps with episiotomy (linear trend p<0.01). Conclusion: Overall OASI rates have continued to increase. Known risk factors do not fully explain the increase for non-instrumental births without episiotomy and forceps with episiotomy. Light-Driven H2 Evolution and CâC or CâO Bond Hydrogenation by Shewanella oneidensis : A Versatile Strategy for Photocatalysis by Nonphotosynthetic Microorganisms
Photocatalytic chemical synthesis by coupling abiotic photosensitizers to purified enzymes provides an effective way to overcome the low conversion efficiencies of natural photosynthesis while exploiting the high catalytic rates and selectivity of enzymes as renewable, earth-abundant electrocatalysts. However, the selective synthesis of multiple products requires more versatile approaches and should avoid the time-consuming and costly processes of enzyme purification. Here we demonstrate a cell-based strategy supporting light-driven H2 evolution or the hydrogenation of CâC and CâO bonds in a nonphotosynthetic microorganism. Methylviologen shuttles photoenergized electrons from water-soluble photosensitizers to enzymes that catalyze H2 evolution and the reduction of fumarate, pyruvate, and CO2 in Shewanella oneidensis. The predominant reaction is selected by the experimental conditions, and the results allow rational development of cell-based strategies to harness natureâs intrinsic catalytic diversity for selective light-driven synthesis of a wide range of products
Association of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme and Angiotensinogen Gene Polymorphisms with Preeclampsia
We tested the hypothesis that angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and angiotensinogen gene polymorphism influence the incidence, development and outcome of preeclampsia. Subjects were recruited from 90 Korean patients with preeclampsia during pregnancy and 98 age-matched controls. After isolation of DNA, polymerase chain reactions (PCR) were carried out to detect polymorphism of the ACE and angiotensinogen. M235T and T174M genotypes of angiotensinogen were determined by digestion with restriction enzyme endonuclease Tth 111-I and NCo I, respectively. The frequency of DD genotype was significantly greater in preeclampsia (0.36) than in controls (0.14) (p<0.05). The frequency of D allele was 0.55 in preeclampsia and 0.40 in controls (p<0.05). There were no differences in the onset of preeclampsia and pregnancy outcomes according to the ACE genotypes. There was no difference in the frequency of a allele of angiotensinogen M235T between the groups (0.79:0.78 in preeclampsia : controls). The frequency of T allele of angiotensinogen T174M gene was slightly increased, but not significantly, in preeclampsia (0.11) than in controls (0.07). In a multivariate analysis, only ACE genotype was associated with the development of preeclampsia (ÎČ=0.27, p=0.05). In conclusion, a molecular variant of ACE, but not angiotensinogen, gene is associated with preeclampsia in Korean women
Anticholinesterase Therapy for Patients with Ophthalmoplegia Following Snake Bites: Report of Two Cases
Although ophthalmoplegia following snake bites is not indicative of a serious neurotoxic complication, symptoms of diplopia, dizziness and ocular discomfort can be emotionally devastating for patients. The authors experienced two cases of ophthalmoplegia following snake bites in Korea. The patients complained of diplopia that had developed several hours after the snake bites. The diplopia did not improve with antivenom treatment, but resolved completely after several injections of neostigmine
