Air pollution and vegetation: ICP Vegetation annual report 2015/2016
The International Cooperative Programme on Effects of Air Pollution on Natural Vegetation and Crops (ICP Vegetation) was established in 1987. It is led by the UK and has its Programme Coordination Centre at the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) in Bangor. It is one of seven ICPs and Task Forces that report to the Working Group on Effects (WGE) of the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP Convention) on the effects of atmospheric pollutants on different components of the environment (e.g. forests, fresh waters, materials) and health in Europe and North America. Today, the ICP Vegetation comprises an enthusiastic group of scientists from 50 countries, including scientists from outside the UNECE region. An overview of contributions to the WGE workplan and other research activities in the year 2015/16 is provided in this report
Spatial distribution of PAH concentrations and stable isotope signatures (δ13C, δ15N) in mosses from three European areas – Characterization by multivariate analysis
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations and N, C stable isotope signatures were determined in mosses Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. from 61 sites of 3 European regions: Île-de-France (France); Navarra (Spain); the Swiss Plateau and Basel area (Switzerland). Total PAH concentrations of 100-700 ng g-1, as well as δ13C values of -32 to -29‰ and δ15N values of -11 to -3‰ were measured. Pearson correlation tests revealed opposite trends between high molecular weight PAH (4-6 aromatic rings) content and δ13C values. Partial Least Square regressions explained the very significant correlations (r > 0.91, p < 0.001) between high molecular weight PAH concentrations by local urban land use (<10 km) and environmental factors such as elevation and pluviometry. Finally, specific correlations between heavy metal and PAH concentrations were attributed to industrial emissions in Switzerland and road traffic emissions in Spain

Performance of normal young adults in two temporal resolution tests
BACKGROUND: temporal auditory processing is defined as the perception of sound or of sound alteration within a restricted time interval and is considered a fundamental ability for the auditory perception of verbal and non verbal sounds, for the perception of music, rhythm, periodicity and in the discrimination of pitch, duration and of phonemes. AIM: to compare the performance of normal Brazilian adults in two temporal resolution tests: the Gaps-in-Noise Test (GIN) and the Random Gap Detection Test (RGDT), and to analyze potential differences of performance in these two tests. METHOD: twenty-five college students with normal hearing (11 males and 14 females) and no history of educational, neurological and/or language problems, underwent the GIN and RGDT at 40dB SL. RESULTS: statistically significant gender effects for both tests were found, with female participants showing poorer performance on both temporal processing tests. In addition, a comparative analysis of the results obtained in the GIN and RGDT revealed significant differences in the threshold measures derived for these two tests. In general, significantly better gap detection thresholds were observed for both male and female participants on the GIN test when compared to the results obtained for the RGDT. CONCLUSION: male participants presented better performances on both RGDT and GIN, when compared to the females. There were no differences in performance between right and left ears on the GIN test. Participants of the present investigation, males and females, performed better on the GIN when compared to the RGDT. The GIN presented advantages over the RGDT, not only in terms of clinical validity and sensibility, but also in terms of application and scoring.TEMA: o processamento auditivo temporal se refere a percepção de um evento sonoro ou de uma alteração no mesmo, dentro de um intervalo definido de tempo e é considerado uma habilidade fundamental na percepção auditiva de sons verbais e não verbais, na percepção de música, ritmo e pontuação e na discriminação de pitch, de duração e de fonemas. OBJETIVO: realizar um estudo comparativo do desempenho de adultos jovens normais nos testes de resolução temporal, Random Gap Detection Test (RGDT) e Gaps-in-Noise (GIN) e analisar diferenças entre esses dois métodos de avaliação. MÉTODO: 25 universitários, 11 homens e 14 mulheres, com audição normal e sem histórico de alterações educacionais, neurológicas e/ou linguagem, foram submetidos ao RGDT e ao GIN, a 40dB NS. RESULTADO: observou-se diferença estatisticamente significante entre os sexos sendo que as mulheres apresentaram pior desempenho nos dois testes. No estudo comparativo dos resultados do RGDT e GIN, observaram-se diferenças significativas no desempenho da amostra. De maneira geral, os limiares de detecção de gap no teste GIN foram melhores do que os limiares obtidos no RGDT. CONCLUSÃO: o sexo masculino teve melhor desempenho tanto no teste RGDT quanto no GIN, quando comparado ao feminino. Além disso, não houve diferença significante nas repostas do GIN nas orelhas direita e esquerda. Os sujeitos deste estudo tiveram melhor desempenho no teste GIN, quando comparado ao RGDT, tanto no sexo masculino quanto no feminino. The Practical Application of the Individual Care Plan for Pediatric Palliative Care: A Mixed-Method Study
Background/Objective: The Individual Care Plan (ICP) for pediatric palliative care was developed to provide person-centered care for the individual child and family. Currently, a lack of clarity remains regarding the use and function of the ICP in daily practice. To further implement the ICP, it is important to identify how parents and healthcare professionals use the ICP and which obstacles or benefits are experienced. Methods: This mixed-method study used qualitative interviews and quantitative questionnaires in (bereaved) parents and healthcare professionals with experience with the ICP. Results: Parents and healthcare professionals used the ICP to establish a joint plan for care and treatment of the child to coordinate care and to achieve child- and family-centered care. This includes both obstacles that complicate achieving care goals and benefits that make it easier. Furthermore, responsibilities for the ICP remained unclear, and there was no set point in the illness trajectory for drawing up the ICP. Conclusions: Parents and healthcare professionals use the ICP as intended. However, uncertainties regarding timing, roles and responsibilities prevent optimal use of the ICP. Agreements on timing and responsibilities are needed for further ICP implementation in daily pediatric palliative care practice
Questionnaire Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly - Screening version (HHIE-S): sensitivity and specificity study
PURPOSE: To investigate the sensitivity and specificity of the questionnaire Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly - Screening version (HHIE-S) in the hearing screening of elderly people who seek for different health care services (audiological clinic and other clinics). METHODS: The hearing of 78 elderly - 23 attended at the Discipline of Geriatrics and Gerontology of the institution who did not, necessarily, have complaints regarding their hearing, and 55 attended at the Audiology Clinic of the same institution with complaints related to the auditory and/or vestibular systems - was assessed. The HHIE-S questionnaire was applied, and its total score was divided into three categories, according to the handicap perception. RESULTS: A statistically significant relationship was found between handicap and degree of hearing loss in both patients from the Audiology Clinic (p=0.009*) and from the Geriatrics Clinic (p=0.002). In the first group, the HHIE-S questionnaire showed low sensitivity (23.5%) and high specificity (73.7%). In the group of patients from the Geriatrics Clinic, the values of sensitivity (94.7%) and specificity (75%) were both high. CONCLUSIONS: There was positive association between the degree of hearing loss and the handicap referred by both groups of subjects. The HHIE-S questionnaire is a hearing screening instrument with high sensitivity and specificity in identifying hearing loss in elderly people that seek health care services that are not specific for attention related to hearing disorders.OBJETIVO: Investigar a sensibilidade e especificidade do questionário Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly - Screening version (HHIE-S) na triagem auditiva de idosos que procuram diferentes serviços de atenção à saúde (clínica audiológica e outras clínicas). MÉTODOS: Foi avaliada a audição de 78 idosos - 23 atendidos na disciplina de Geriatria e Gerontologia da instituição de origem, que não tinham, necessariamente, queixas relacionadas à audição, e 55 atendidos no Ambulatório de Audiologia da mesma instituição, com queixas relacionadas aos sistemas auditivo e/ou vestibular. Foi aplicado o HHIE-S, cujo escore total foi dividido em três categorias, de acordo com a percepção do handicap. RESULTADOS: Houve relação estatisticamente significante entre handicap e grau de perda auditiva no grupo de pacientes do Ambulatório de Audiologia (p=0,009), e no grupo de pacientes do Ambulatório de Geriatria (p=0,002). No primeiro grupo, o questionário HHIE-S revelou baixa sensibilidade (23,5%) e alta especificidade (73,7%). No grupo de pacientes do setor de Geriatria, foram altos os valores de sensibilidade (94,7%) e de especificidade (75%). CONCLUSÕES: Há associação positiva entre o grau de perda auditiva e o handicap referido em ambos os grupos. Modelling impacts of atmospheric deposition and temperature on long-term DOC trends
It is increasingly recognised that widespread and substantial increases in Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in remote surface, and soil, waters in recent decades are linked to declining acid deposition. Effects of rising pH and declining ionic strength on DOC solubility have been proposed as potential dominant mechanisms. However, since DOC in these systems is derived mainly from recently-fixed carbon, and since organic matter decomposition rates are considered sensitive to temperature, uncertainty persists over the extent to which other drivers that could influence DOC production. Such potential drivers include fertilization by nitrogen (N) and global warming. We therefore ran the dynamic soil chemistry model MADOC for a range of UK soils, for which time series data are available, to consider the likely relative importance of decreased deposition of sulphate and chloride, accumulation of reactive N, and higher temperatures, on soil DOC production in different soils. Modelled patterns of DOC change generally agreed favourably with measurements collated over 10-20 years, but differed markedly between sites. While the acidifying effect of sulphur deposition appeared to be the predominant control on the observed soil water DOC trends in all the soils considered other than a blanket peat, the model suggested that over the long term, the effects of nitrogen deposition on N-limited soils may have been sufficient to raise the “acid recovery DOC baseline” significantly. In contrast, reductions in non-marine chloride deposition and effects of long term warming appeared to have been relatively unimportant. The suggestion that future DOC concentrations might exceed preindustrial levels as a consequence of nitrogen pollution has important implications for drinking water catchment management and the setting and pursuit of appropriate restoration targets, but findings still require validation from reliable centennial-scale proxy records, such as those being developed using palaeolimnological techniques
