Time-Delayed transfer functions simulations for LMXBs
Recent works (Steeghs & Casares 2002, Casares et al. 2003, Hynes et al. 2003)
have demonstrated that Bowen flourescence is a very efficient tracer of the
companion star in LMXBs. We present a numerical code to simulate time-delayed
transfer functions in LMXBs, specific to the case of reprocessing in emission
lines. The code is also able to obtain geometrical and binary parameters by
fitting observed (X-ray + optical) light curves using simulated annealing
methods. In this work we present the geometrical model for the companion star
and the analytical model for the disc and show synthetic time-delay transfer

Rotational Broadening and Doppler Tomography of the Quiescent X-Ray Nova Centaurus X-4
We present high and intermediate resolution spectroscopy of the X-ray nova
Centaurus X-4 during its quiescent phase. Our analysis of the absorption
features supports a K3-K5V spectral classification for the companion star,
which contributes approximately 75 % of the total flux at Halpha. Using the
high resolution spectra we have measured the secondary star's rotational
broadening to be V_rot*sin(i) = 43 +/- 6 km/s and determined a binary mass
ratio of q=0.17 +/- 0.06. Combining our results for K_2 and q with the
published limits for the binary inclination, we constrain the mass of the
compact object and the secondary star to the ranges 0.49 < M_1 < 2.49 Msun and
0.04 < M_2 < 0.58 Msun. A Doppler image of the Halpha line shows emission
coming from the secondary star, but no hotspot is present. We discuss the

A possible black hole in the gamma-ray microquasar LS 5039
The population of high energy and very high energy gamma-ray sources,
detected with EGRET and the new generation of ground-based Cherenkov
telescopes, conforms a reduced but physically important sample. Most of these
sources are extragalactic (e.g., blazars), while among the galactic ones there
are pulsars and SN remnants. The microquasar LS 5039, previously proposed to be
associated with an EGRET source by Paredes et al. (2000), has recently been
detected at TeV energies, confirming that microquasars should be regarded as a
class of high energy gamma-ray sources. To model and understand how the
energetic photons are produced and escape from LS 5039 it is crucial to unveil
the nature of the compact object, which remains unknown. Here we present new
intermediate-dispersion spectroscopy of this source which, combined with values
reported in the literature, provides an orbital period of 3.90603+/-0.00017 d,
a mass function f(M)=0.0053+/-0.0009 M_sun, and an eccentricity e=0.35+/-0.04.
Atmosphere model fitting to the spectrum of the optical companion, together
with our new distance estimate of d=2.5+/-0.1 kpc, yields R_opt=9.3+0.7-0.6
R_sun, log (L_opt/L_sun)=5.26+/-0.06, and M_opt=22.9+3.4-2.9 M_sun. These,
combined with our dynamical solution and the assumption of
pseudo-synchronization, yield an inclination i=24.9+/-2.8 degree and a compact
object mass M_X=3.7+1.3-1.0 M_sun. This is above neutron star masses for most
of the standard equations of state and, therefore, we propose that the compact
object in LS 5039 is a black hole. We finally discuss about the implications of
our orbital solution and new parameters of the binary system on the CNO
products, the accretion/ejection energetic balance, the SN explosion scenario,

Promotion of learning skills in the study of economics. pilot project in the subject area of
This communication is part of a larger teaching innovation project financed by the University of
Barcelona, whose objective is to develop and evaluate transversal competences of the UB, learning
ability and responsibility. The competence is divided into several sub-competencies being the ability to
analyze and synthesis the most intensely worked in the first year. The work presented here part from
the results obtained in phase 1 and 2 previously implemented in other subjects (Mathematics and
History) in the first year of the degree of Business Administration Degree. In these subjects’ previous
experiences there were deficiencies in the acquisition of learning skills by the students. The work in
the subject of Mathematics facilitated that students become aware of the deficit. The work on the
subject of History insisted on developing readings schemes and with the practical exercises was
sought to go deeply in the development of this competence.
The third phase presented here is developed in the framework of the second year degree, in the World
Economy subject. The objective of this phase is the development and evaluation of the same cross
competence of the previous phases, from a practice that includes both, quantitative analysis and
critical reflection. Specifically the practice focuses on the study of the dynamic relationship between
economic growth and the dynamics in the distribution of wealth. The activity design as well as the
selection of materials to make it, has been directed to address gaps in the ability to analyze and
synthesize detected in the subjects of the first year in the previous phases of the project.
The realization of the practical case is considered adequate methodology to improve the acquisition of
competence of the students, then it is also proposed how to evaluate the acquisition of such
competence. The practice is evaluated based on a rubric developed in the framework of the project
objectives. Thus at the end of phase 3 we can analyze the process that have followed the students,
detect where they have had major difficulties and identify those aspects of teaching that can help to
improve the acquisition of skills by the students. The interest of this phase resides in the possibility to
value whether tracing of learning through competences, organized in a collaborative way, is a good
tool to develop the acquisition of these skills and facilitate their evaluation.2012PID-UB/00
Psychometric validation of the Spanish version of the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure applied to dental students.
Aim: To carry out a psychometric evaluation of the Spanish-language version of the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) applied to dental students. Methods: A total of 1,391 students from nine Spanish public schools of dentistry responded to the DREEM questionnaire. To analyse the reliability of the DREEM questionnaire, the internal consistency was assessed and a 'test-retest' carried out. Validity was evaluated through analysis of item response rate, floor and ceiling effects, corrected item-total and item-subscale correlations and factor structure. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed to analyse the structure of the original DREEM scale. Results: Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the 'Educational Climate'(EC) global scale was 0.92. In the subscales, the 'observed' Cronbach's alpha coefficients ranged between 0.57 and 0.79 and were higher than the 'expected' ones; except for the Social subscale. In the DREEM questionnaire, all of the corrected correlation coefficients between the items and the EC global scale, and the items and their corresponding subscales, were >0.2; except for items 50 and 17. All goodness-of-fit indices of confirmatory factor analysis showed acceptable values (close to one or zero, depending on the case), and there was consistency in the results. Conclusions: The Spanish-language version of the DREEM questionnaire is a reliable and valid instrument for analysing the EC for dental students and its factor structure is supported by the data. Although our findings indicate that the DREEM may be as culturally independent as was originally stated, more research should be directed at verifying the factor structure in various languages and cultural environments
