    Coastal erosion monitoring in Colombia: overview and study cases on Caribbean and Pacific coasts

    Tourism is one of the fastest growing activities in Colombia; the coast represents the favourite destination for both national and foreign visitors. However, coastal erosion is an actual problem, with high erosive rates in some areas. This chapter shows a general overview of the coastal erosion problem in Colombia and emphasizes the institutional framework used in monitoring. Four study cases are included to present a wide diagnosis of relevant erosive processes, both on Caribbean and Pacific coasts. Findings show erosive rates due to human interventions in all coastal departments on the Caribbean Sea; highest values were recorded in Cordoba (3.3 m/yr), Magdalena (5.3 m/yr) and La Guajira (3.2 m/yr). In addition, monitoring of barrier islands indicated that erosive processes on the Pacific coast are essentially due to natural phenomena, i.e. tsunami and El Niño events. In conclusion, long-term coastal erosion monitoring is urgently required in order to make adequate decisions and assess their effectiveness, with special concern to the correct location of coastal infrastructure and the management of coastal risks

    An ABS control logic based on wheel force measurement

    The paper presents an anti-lock braking system (ABS) control logic based on the measurement of the longitudinal forces at the hub bearings. The availability of force information allows to design a logic that does not rely on the estimation of the tyre-road friction coefficient, since it continuously tries to exploit the maximum longitudinal tyre force. The logic is designed by means of computer simulation and then tested on a specific hardware in the loop test bench: the experimental results confirm that measured wheel force can lead to a significant improvement of the ABS performances in terms of stopping distance also in the presence of road with variable friction coefficien

    Recent models for adaptive personality differences: a review

    In this paper we review recent models that provide adaptive explanations for animal personalities: individual differences in behaviour (or suites of correlated behaviours) that are consistent over time or contexts. We start by briefly discussing patterns of variation in behaviour that have been documented in natural populations. In the main part of the paper we discuss models for personality differences that (i) explain animal personalities as adaptive behavioural responses to differences in state, (ii) investigate how feedbacks between state and behaviour can stabilize initial differences among individuals and (iii) provide adaptive explanations for animal personalities that are not based on state differences. Throughout, we focus on two basic questions. First, what is the basic conceptual idea underlying the model? Second, what are the key assumptions and predictions of the model? We conclude by discussing empirical features of personalities that have not yet been addressed by formal modelling. While this paper is primarily intended to guide empiricists through current adaptive theory, thereby stimulating empirical tests of these models, we hope it also inspires theoreticians to address aspects of personalities that have received little attention up to now

En ésta investigación se estudia la capacidad antioxidante de extractos acuosos por Voltametría Cíclica y el efecto reductor de extractos etanólicos por FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power) de 15 frutas tropicales. Los mejores resultados tanto de capacidad antioxidante como reductora son los de la curuba larga (Passiflora mollisima (HBK) Bailey) con una altura de pico máxima de 38,6 décimas de μA a un potencial de 316,6 mV y 4127,346 ± 108,62 mg Ácido Ascórbico/ 100gr de muestra, respectivamente

    Exploratory behavior, but not aggressiveness, is correlated with breeding dispersal propensity in the highly philopatric thorn-tailed rayadito

    Studies on the relationship between behavioral traits and dispersal are necessary to understand the evolution of dispersal syndromes. Empirical studies have mainly focused on natal dispersal, even though behavioral differences between dispersers and philopatric individuals are suspected to hold through the whole life cycle, potentially affecting breeding dispersal propensity. Using capture–mark–recapture data and behavioral trials in a forest passerine, the thorn-tailed rayadito Aphrastura spinicauda, we describe inter-individual differences in exploratory behavior and aggressiveness, and investigate the relationship between those traits and breeding dispersal. Our study took place in Fray Jorge National Park, north-central Chile, where a relatively isolated population of rayaditos inhabits a naturally fragmented environment. We found that scores for behavioral traits were consistent between years. Exploratory behavior was similar between sexes, while males showed higher levels of aggression towards a conspecific male intruder. Only exploratory behavior was related to breeding dispersal propensity, with fast-exploring rayaditos being more likely to have dispersed between seasons. This finding provides indirect evidence for the existence of a dispersal strategy that could reduce dispersal costs in the fragmented landscape of Fray Jorge. To our knowledge, this is the first study documenting an association between breeding dispersal and exploratory behavior in a wild bird population. A longitudinal individual-based study will help determining whether this association constitutes a behavioral syndrome.Indexación: Scopu

    Symplectic invariants, entropic measures and correlations of Gaussian states

    We present a derivation of the Von Neumann entropy and mutual information of arbitrary two--mode Gaussian states, based on the explicit determination of the symplectic eigenvalues of a generic covariance matrix. The key role of the symplectic invariants in such a determination is pointed out. We show that the Von Neumann entropy depends on two symplectic invariants, while the purity (or the linear entropy) is determined by only one invariant, so that the two quantities provide two different hierarchies of mixed Gaussian states. A comparison between mutual information and entanglement of formation for symmetric states is considered, remarking the crucial role of the symplectic eigenvalues in qualifying and quantifying the correlations present in a generic state.Comment: 6 pages, no figures, revised version, sections and references added, to appear in J.     The role of clathrin in post-golgi trafficking in toxoplasma gondii

    Apicomplexan parasites are single eukaryotic cells with a highly polarised secretory system that contains unique secretory organelles (micronemes and rhoptries) that are required for host cell invasion. In contrast, the role of the endosomal system is poorly understood in these parasites. With many typical endocytic factors missing, we speculated that endocytosis depends exclusively on a clathrin-mediated mechanism. Intriguingly, in Toxoplasma gondii we were only able to observe the endogenous clathrin heavy chain 1 (CHC1) at the Golgi, but not at the parasite surface. For the functional characterisation of Toxoplasma gondii CHC1 we generated parasite mutants conditionally expressing the dominant negative clathrin Hub fragment and demonstrate that CHC1 is essential for vesicle formation at the trans-Golgi network. Consequently, the functional ablation of CHC1 results in Golgi aberrations, a block in the biogenesis of the unique secretory microneme and rhoptry organelles, and of the pellicle. However, we found no morphological evidence for clathrin mediating endocytosis in these parasites and speculate that they remodelled their vesicular trafficking system to adapt to an intracellular lifestyle

    Thermodynamic Simulation of the RDX-Aluminum Interface Using ReaxFF Molecular Dynamics

    We use reactive molecular dynamics (RMD) simulations to study the interface between cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX) and aluminum (Al) with different oxide layers to elucidate the effect of nanosized Al on thermal decomposition of RDX. A published ReaxFF force field for C/H/N/O elements was retrained to incorporate Al interactions and then used in RMD simulations to characterize compound energetic materials. We find that the predicted adsorption energies for RDX on the Al(111) surface and the apparent activation energies of RDX and RDX/Al are in agreement with ab initio calculations. The Al(111) surface-assisted decomposition of RDX occurs spontaneously without potential barriers, but the decomposition rate becomes slow when compared with that for RDX powder. We also find that the Al(111) surface with an oxide layer (Al oxide) slightly increases the potential barriers for decomposition of RDX molecules, while α-Al_2O_3(0001) retards thermal decomposition of RDX, due to the changes in thermal decomposition kinetics. The most likely mechanism for the thermal decomposition of RDX powder is described by the Avrami–Erofeev equation, with n = 3/4, as random nucleation and subsequent growth model. Although the decomposition mechanism of RDX molecules in the RDX/Al matrix complies with three-dimensional diffusion, Jander’s equation for RDX(210)/Al oxide and the Zhuralev–Lesokin–Tempelman (Z-L-T) equation for RDX(210)/Al_2O_3(0001) provide a more accurate description. We conclude that the origin of these differences in dynamic behavior is due to the variations in the oxide layer morphologies
