    The dwarf low surface brightness population in different environments of the Local Universe

    The nature of the dwarf galaxy population as a function of location in the cluster and within different environments is investigated. We have previously described the results of a search for low surface brightness objects in data drawn from an East-West strip of the Virgo cluster (Sabatini et al., 2003) and have compared this to a large area strip outside of the cluster (Roberts et al., 2004). In this talk I compare the East-West data (sampling sub-cluster A and outward) to new data along a North-South cluster strip that samples a different region (part of sub-cluster A, and the N,M clouds) and with data obtained for the Ursa Major cluster and fields around the spiral galaxy M101. The sample of dwarf galaxies in different environments is obtained from uniform datasets that reach central surface brightness values of ~26 B mag/arcsec^2 and an apparent B magnitude of 21 (M_B=-10 for a Virgo Cluster distance of 16 Mpc). We discuss and interpret our results on the properties and distribution of dwarf low surface brightness galaxies in the context of variuos physical processes that are thought to act on galaxies as they form and evolve.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, to appear in "Dark Galaxies and Lost Baryons", IAU244 conference proceeding

    The impact of assembly bias on the halo occupation in hydrodynamical simulations

    We investigate the variations in galaxy occupancy of the dark matter haloes with the large-scale environment and halo formation time, using two state-of-the-art hydrodynamical cosmological simulations, EAGLE and Illustris. For both simulations, we use three galaxy samples with a fixed number density ranked by stellar mass. For these samples, we find that low-mass haloes in the most dense environments are more likely to host a central galaxy than those in the least dense environments. When splitting the halo population by formation time, these relations are stronger. Hence, at a fixed low halo mass, early-formed haloes are more likely to host a central galaxy than late-formed haloes since they have had more time to assemble. The satellite occupation shows a reverse trend where early-formed haloes host fewer satellites due to having more time to merge with the central galaxy. We also analyse the stellar mass–halo mass relation for central galaxies in terms of the large-scale environment and formation time of the haloes. We find that low-mass haloes in the most dense environment host relatively more massive central galaxies. This trend is also found when splitting the halo population by age, with early-formed haloes hosting more massive galaxies. Our results are in agreement with previous findings from semi-analytical models, providing robust predictions for the occupancy variation signature in the halo occupation distribution of galaxy formation models

    Environmental Enhancement of DM Haloes

    We study the properties of dark matter haloes of a LCDM model in different environments. Using the distance of the 5th nearest neighbour as an environmental density indicator, we show that haloes in a high density environment are more massive, richer, have larger radii and larger velocity dispersions than haloes in a low density environment. Haloes in high density regions move with larger velocities, and are more spherical than haloes in low density regions. In addition, low mass haloes in the vicinity of the most massive haloes are themselves more massive, larger, and have larger rms velocities and larger 3D velocities than low mass haloes far from massive haloes. The velocities of low mass haloes near massive haloes increase with the parent halo mass. Our results are in agreement with recent findings about environmental effects for groups and clusters of galaxies from deep (SDSS and LCRS) surveys.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, submitted for Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Searching for X-ray luminous 'normal' galaxies in 2dfGRS

    We cross-correlated the Chandra XASSIST and XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogues with the 2 degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dfGRS) database. Our aim was to identify the most X-ray luminous (L_X > 10^42 erg s^-1) examples of galaxies in the local Universe whose X-ray emission is dominated by stellar processes rather than AGN activity ('normal' galaxies) as well as to test the empirical criterion log(f_X/f_O) < -2 for separating AGN from NGs. With XMM-Newton (Chandra) we covered an area of ~8.2 (~5.8)deg^2 down to a flux limit of ~10^-15 (~1.6 x 10^-15) erg cm^-2 s^-1 and found 18 (20) 2dfGRS galaxies. Using emission-line intensity ratios, we classified 6 2dfGRS spectra as star-forming, H II nuclei, and 2 spectra as possible H II nuclei. The rest of the objects are absorption-line galaxies and AGN, including 3 possible LINERs. No luminous 'normal' galaxies have been found but out of 19 'normal' galaxies in this sample 5 H II and 3 absorption-line galaxies have log(f_X/f_O) > -2. We performed a similar search in two nearby-galaxy samples from the literature. All 44 galaxies in the Zezas (2001) sample have log(f_X/f_O) < -2 and L_X < 10^42 erg s^-1. In the Fabbiano et al. (1992) sample, out of a total of 170 'normal' galaxies, we found 16 galaxies with log(f_X/f_O) >-2, the majority of which are massive ellipticals.     A lightcone catalogue from the Millennium-XXL simulation

    Future galaxy surveys require realistic mock catalogues to understand and quantify systematics in order to make precise cosmological measurements. We present a halo lightcone catalogue and halo occupation distribution (HOD) galaxy catalogue built using the Millennium-XXL simulation. The halo catalogue covers the full sky, extending to z = 2.2 with a mass resolution of ∼1011 h−1 M⊙. We use this to build a galaxy catalogue, which has an r-band magnitude limit of r < 20.0, with a median redshift of z ∼ 0.2. A Monte Carlo HOD method is used to assign galaxies to the halo lightcone catalogue, and we evolve the HODs to reproduce a target luminosity function; by construction, the luminosity function of galaxies in the mock is in agreement with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) at low redshifts and the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey at high redshifts. A Monte Carlo method is used to assign a 0.1(g − r) colour to each galaxy, and the colour distribution of galaxies at different redshifts agrees with measurements from GAMA. The clustering of galaxies in the mock for galaxies in different magnitude and redshift bins is in good agreement with measurements from SDSS and GAMA, and the colour-dependent clustering is in reasonable agreement. We show that the baryon acoustic oscillation can be measured in the mock catalogue, and the redshift-space distortions are in agreement with measurements from SDSS illustrating that this catalogue will be useful for upcoming surveys

    The upgraded Polaris powder diffractometer at the ISIS neutron source

    This paper describes the design and operation of the Polaris time-of-flight powder neutron diffractometer at the ISIS pulsed spallation neutron source, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK. Following a major upgrade to the diffractometer in 2010-2011, its detector provision now comprises five large ZnS scintillator-based banks, covering an angular range of 6\ub0 ≤ 2θ ≤ 168\ub0, with only minimal gaps between each bank. These detectors have a substantially increased solid angle coverage (ω ∼5.67 sr) compared to the previous instrument (ω ∼0.82 sr), resulting in increases in count rate of between 2 7 and 10 7, depending on 2θ angle. The benefits arising from the high count rates achieved are illustrated using selected examples of experiments studying small sample volumes and performing rapid, time-resolved investigations. In addition, the enhanced capabilities of the diffractometer in the areas of in situ studies (which are facilitated by the installation of a novel design of radial collimator around the sample position and by a complementary programme of advanced sample environment developments) and in total scattering studies (to probe the nature of short-range atomic correlations within disordered crystalline solids) are demonstrated

    Analytically tractable climate-carbon cycle feedbacks under 21st century anthropogenic forcing

    Changes to climate-carbon cycle feedbacks may significantly affect the Earth System’s response to greenhouse gas emissions. These feedbacks are usually analysed from numerical output of complex and arguably opaque Earth System Models (ESMs). Here, we construct a stylized global climate-carbon cycle model, test its output against complex ESMs, and investigate the strengths of its climate-carbon cycle feedbacks analytically. The analytical expressions we obtain aid understanding of carbon-cycle feedbacks and the operation of the carbon cycle. We use our results to analytically study the relative strengths of different climate-carbon cycle feedbacks and how they may change in the future, as well as to compare different feedback formalisms. Simple models such as that developed here also provide "workbenches" for simple but mechanistically based explorations of Earth system processes, such as interactions and feedbacks between the Planetary Boundaries, that are currently too uncertain to be included in complex ESMs

PN acknowledges the support of the Royal Society through the award of a University Research Fellowship and the European Research Council, through receipt of a Starting Grant (DEGAS-259586).We use the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey to measure the local Universe mass-dependent merger fraction and merger rate using galaxy pairs and the CAS (concentration, asymmetry, and smoothness) structural method, which identifies highly asymmetric merger candidate galaxies. Our goals are to determine which types of mergers produce highly asymmetrical galaxies and to provide a new measurement of the local galaxy major merger rate. We examine galaxy pairs at stellar mass limits down to M* = 108 M⊙ with mass ratios of 4:1) the lower mass companion becomes highly asymmetric, whereas the larger galaxy is much less affected. The fraction of highly asymmetric paired galaxies which have a major merger companion is highest for the most massive galaxies and drops progressively with decreasing mass. We calculate that the mass-dependent major merger fraction is fairly constant at ∼1.3–2 per cent within 109.5 < M* < 1011.5 M⊙, and increases to ∼4 per cent at lower masses. When the observability time-scales are taken into consideration, the major merger rate is found to approximately triple over the mass range we consider. The total comoving volume major merger rate over the range 108.0 < M* < 1011.5 M⊙ is (1.2 ± 0.5) × 10−3 h370 Mpc−3 Gyr−1.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    The ALHAMBRA survey: Evolution of galaxy clustering since z∼1

    We study the clustering of galaxies as function of luminosity and redshift in the range 0.35< z < 1.25 using data from the Advanced Large Homogeneous Area Medium-Band Redshift Astronomical (ALHAMBRA) survey. The ALHAMBRA data used in this work cover 2.38 deg2 in seven independent fields, after applying a detailed angular selection mask, with accurate photometric redshifts,σz≲ 0.014(1 + z), down to IAB < 24. Given the depth of the survey, we select samples in B-band luminosity down to Lth ≃ 0.16L* at z=0.9. We measure the real-space clustering using the projected correlation function, accounting for photometric redshifts uncertainties. We infer the galaxy bias, and study its evolution with luminosity. We study the effect of sample variance, and confirm earlier results that the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) and European Large Area ISO Survey North 1 (ELAIS-N1) fields are dominated by the presence of large structures. For the intermediate and bright samples, Lmed ≳ 0.6L*, we obtain a strong dependence of bias on luminosity, in agreement with previous results at similar redshift. We are able to extend this study to fainter luminosities, where we obtain an almost flat relation, similar to that observed at low redshift. Regarding the evolution of bias with redshift, our results suggest that the different galaxy populations studied reside in haloes covering a range in mass between log10[Mh( h-1M{bull's eye})] ≳ 11.5 for samples with Lmed = 0.3L* and log10[Mh( h-1M⊙)] ≳ 13.0 for samples with Lmed = 2L*, with typical occupation numbers in the range of 1-3 galaxies per halo.Junta de Andalucía P08-TIC-3531Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación AYA2010-22111- C03-01 CSD2007-0006
